Question on Afghanistans AAA/SAM capabilities
KungFuCharlie replied to mig29movt's topic in Military and Aviation
It is in fact the IRC program. Intelligence analysts (and many others actually) rely heavily on mIRC chat on both SIPR and JWICS. It is the fastest way to get information. They have various chat rooms set up for different units, agencies, and tasks. So most likely the pilot or report writer went on mIRC and described the situation to an intelligence weenie. -
Question on Afghanistans AAA/SAM capabilities
KungFuCharlie replied to mig29movt's topic in Military and Aviation
The only real clue to that is the last two sentences in the report... My guess would be one of three things... 1) an intelligence officer as you stated 2) a technical consultant or 3) an officer in the unit who was once an enlisted stinger guy. Number 2 seems a little unlikely since the last sentence states they are going to consult a technician. So I think you're right on it being an intelligence guy. -

If you want to run windows applications on your server then Windows Server 2008. If you're just connecting to it from a Windows machine then you can still run the Linux version of Teamspeak Server on a Linux server. The other option is to install Linux and run Windows Server 2008 in a virtual machine so you effectively have two servers... host your web pages from Apache on the Linux side and whatever windows apps you need on the windows VM. The VM option is a lot more advanced though so if you're not a power user or don't like troubleshooting then I would advise against it. Everything is prone to attacks to pretty much the same degree. The most severe issue is inexperienced people setting up servers. So whatever OS you decide to go with, make sure you do a LOT of reading on the internet on how to secure it so you don't get, shall we say, pwned. :D Oh, and don't download the server software from a torrent. Pretty much every OS ISO in the torrent sphere is compromised. If you're going with Windows then buy it or get it from MSDN! Or use Linux since its free. :) Personally I would say run Ubuntu Server Edition... it is free and pretty easy to configure and use. If you have a Windows app or two that you need to run you can try running it in WINE (basically windows emulation for Linux).

what graph cards are best for a 27in monitor
KungFuCharlie replied to Bee_Sting's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
What is the make / model of the monitor and what resolution do you want to drive it at? That will have something to do with whether the card can handle it. -
The South Koreans are making a new civilian airplane that is a dang near exact copy of the Cirrus SR-20 and SR-22. I guess reverse engineering and copying designs are mandatory if you're a country in Southeastern Asia.

Check the loadout that you are using and make sure that it is within limits for a carrier take off. The jet dropping down at the end of the cat stroke is to be expected to some degree. I remember watching the Tomcats do cat shots during OEF. If you were standing next to or aft of the island on the flight deck they would drop from sight. It was one of those things where you always held your breath until it came back into view. Hornets would drop too but never out of sight like the Tomcats.

Yep... and seeing as how most electronics of any sort are manufactured in China now...

Don't get a TrackIR 3 as the latest software for TrackIR 5 doesn't support it. They say it is "coming soon" but they've been saying that for a long while. TrackIR 4 is supported so that is the better choice in the long run.

A-10 Thunderbolt II Historical Film Collection
KungFuCharlie replied to KungFuCharlie's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
I've got an email out to Joe Hodges in hopes that he can provide information on where everyone can obtain it legally. I'll let you know if and when I get a response. Sorry, not going to torrent it without approval for reasons I won't discuss. :) -
A-10 Thunderbolt II Historical Film Collection
KungFuCharlie replied to KungFuCharlie's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
You never know... large government contracts like Lockheed are all about public relations. When people feel good about them then their politicians feel good about them so they get more government contracts. That is why you see commercials for military jets and ships on TV... not like you can buy one yourself! Its all about putting on a good face for the public to help their business contracts in the future. So there is a chance. Maybe a very slim one... but it is there. :) -
A-10 Thunderbolt II Historical Film Collection
KungFuCharlie replied to KungFuCharlie's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
The date on it is 2003. Below are a few quick shots with my iPhone camera. -
From the original video posted it was too rough to tell. From the latest videos, photos, and eye witness reports that came out it is pretty clear.

The files should be named LOCKON_FC2_Keycommands_<aircraft>_<language>.pdf. They are correct for FC2. I'm not sure if there are any differences from the original LO but there are more of them.

Many years ago I purchased a DVD titled A-10 Thunderbolt II Historical Film Collection which was released by Lockheed Martin. If I remember correctly I heard about it on the original Lock On forums from MSgt Joe Hodges who was a simulation fan and the guy who found all the old footage and got the DVD put together for Lockheed Martin. I was going to recommend it here on the forums for A-10 lovers to buy but I cannot find any information regarding this DVD online and the point of contact website and email addresses that are printed on the sleeve no longer work. Did this thing become a relic? I have no problem ripping the DVD and putting up a torrent for you guys to download it so long as I can get some kind of legal verification from Lockheed. Any thoughts? DVD Contents The Past 1. 1976 Farnborough Air Show 2. Night Adverse Weather 3. A-10 Marketing Film 4. Joint Air Support Tactics (JAWS) 5. McDermott Special: A-10 Strafing Tanks The Present 1. A-10 Prime Integration Contract 2. A-10 Precision Engagement 3. Points of Contact

Agreed. Computers really are not as expensive as people think they are unless you really go to the extreme. The nice thing is that you can usually reuse parts. Most SATA and SATA2 mobo's still have one or two IDE channels that you can use old hard drives on. Not that you want to... but if you don't have the $ to upgrade hard drives right now it isn't overly critical. One thing that you do need to consider is your power supply. If you are going to reuse your PSU, make sure it can handle the load of the new CPU and video card. When you go to get a new power supply, try to get one that is more than the video card needs. That way if you decide to overclock your video card in the future, you'll have the room to do so. (A good rule of thumb is for every 10% overclock of video card, increase its power consumption rating by 5%). This is especially important if you want to add a second video card to your system in the future.

I really cannot do anything more than laugh. I just got owned. Completely. Thanks for helping me remove my head from my southern extremity if you know what I mean... EtherealN = 1. Kung Fu Charlie = 0. Not that it helps any but I actually had the 7900GS. That's what I get for trusting my memory. :( But for the record, I still think my original joke is funny. :D

Looked like both engines are at MIL to me but the video isn't all that great. The LEX do look slightly down and you can see a bit of the left flap at one point so I still think he was at half flaps. But again, video isn't all that great so there is a high possibility I am wrong. :) I don't think it was a bird strike... that would have generated a lot more visual and audio indications.
-
I don't think it was an engine failure. You can hear the engines going to MIL and it looks like both vents were tight indicating MIL. In AB or OFF they would open up wide. Looks like he was at half flaps and started to yaw beyond recovery. Hard to say. It was good to see the pilot get out safely though. That is the important part. But it is too bad the forward fuselage didn't make it... would have made a great simpit for my garage. :D

I'll take two of them, please.
-
Exactly... so if I didn't see any improvement from a 7900GT to a 9800GX2, he will be highly unlikely to see any improvement from a 8400GS to any card above what he has without a CPU upgrade as well. Please make sure you read a bit more attentively before you criticize someone unnecessarily.

And for them mankind invented prostitution. :megalol:

With the limited budget I would decrease my graphics settings in the game to get better FPS and save money until I had enough to buy a new modo, CPU, and GPU based on this specs. I had a Athlon X2 CPU with a 7900GT card. I upgraded to the 9800GX2 and didn't see any FPS increase at all. Once I upgraded the CPU the FPS jumped big time. Save yourself the frustration of spending a little $ and seeing no increase in performance. Save up until you can replace all of it. You'll be happier in the long run.

Good videos! When I was a kid I lived in the landing pattern for Patrick AFB in Florida and we used to have boy scout camps on Patrick AFB in the SWAT practice area (what is now the campground) near the end of one of the runways. We used to watch the U2's take off and land. Was always cool watching the jeeps pull up to attach the wheels at the end of the wings after the U2 touched the ground. I also saw the wreckage of the one that fell apart on touch down. Didn't get a good look at it though... I was probably around 12 at the time and the hangar door was open just a little bit.

You can join today with less than perfect eye sight as long as it is correctable to 20/20 as mentioned above. However, in the past, if your eye sight went bad AFTER being in the USAF as a pilot you could continue flying.
