Will there be another event like this?
It sounds like fun, and I can't ever find any servers with MiG pilots to fly against anymore :(
-
Hey it looks like the KOREAN WAR! server is back up and running! I hopped in today and AWACs worked perfectly for both sides :) Thanks JAGTF!
-
That's right, it was very populous but the lack of working AWACS seems to have brought it down.
If there are any JAGTF squad guys reading this, please fix the AWACS! Your server is awesome and it'd be great to bring life back into it.
-
Oh, hmm I don't know who the admin is.
I'll have to look around. But why is this only a problem now? I don't remember anything changing with the process before and it worked great.
-
I noticed that no matter what aircraft you fly, I haven't been able to get a response from AWACS in the KOREAN WAR! server. I'm not sure if the problem persists to other servers.
Furthermore - and I don't know if this is a new bug - if I contact AWACS at all in my F-86, the radio channel selector automatically switches to channel 1, regardless of what I ask AWACS for. I.e. in the KOREAN WAR! server, AWACS transmits on 260 MHz, which corresponds to channel 3 on my radio. So I go to channel 3, and as soon as I ask for Bogey Dope (for example), I see my channel instantaneously switch to channel 1.
If I fly the MiG-15bis, I also get no response from AWACS. Last week when I played, I had no problems getting vectors, now it's impossible to find players unless we contrail and coordinate where to meet in the sky.

I'm not too sure 7-10 G's should be treated so lightly.
Once the plane goes above 7 G's there's supposed to be a check of the entire aircraft as per the manual. Above 10 G's, is an engine inspection. It's not a maybe, or a perhaps. An engine needing to be dropped signifies damage.
Over 7.33 G's, there is likely to be some kind of structural yielding (which is not the same as ultimate failure). I don't have the source of that on me right now, but perhaps I'll see if I can find it later if people want to see it.
And yielding is not structural failure, it's permanent plastic deformation of certain parts and that is not something to chuckle at. Perhaps, just past 7 G's, yeah, it's not too TOO much a big deal, but passing 7.33 G's (given a factor of safety of 1.2) gives you 8.4 G's. So perhaps, you would see some yielding around 8.4 G's and then failure would be around 11 according to what I've read so far. Furthermore, if you bring plastic deformation to a part, its ultimate load will decrease, meaning that maybe 8 G's will cause failure. Note that I used the lower 1.2 factor of safety value for military aircraft which are expected to pull more G's and fight hard where civil planes would use a factor of safety of 1.5. Additionally, pulling 7 G's with load can rip pylons off: http://www.dtic.mil/dtic/tr/fulltext/u2/017568.pdf Forgive me, I can't find the page now but somewhere in there, it states how the pylons left the plane at 7 G's. Ralph Parr has also mentioned gun jams, and blown fuses at 8 G's.
As with any aircraft, fatigue comes into play which means that pulling the aircraft past 7 over and over again for years would eventually bring that plastic deformation point lower. Our F-86 is simply not acting as it should. A single instance past 8 G will almost certainly cause yielding, and continuously going past 7.33 will lead to failure somewhere.

Is there a way to edit at which point certain sounds are triggered?
The 39th guys and I would like to modify the heavy breathing sound trigger so that we can train ourselves to fly near, but not past the 7G limit. If possible, we'd like to edit a lua file so that the heavy breathing starts at around 5.5-6 G rather than 3.5 G.
I wasn't sure if I should put this in the G-limits thread, because it's more about a sound mod than a feature implementation request.
Thanks!

What i understood from the boyds book is that the Sabre has better Roll rate not turning rate, so to avoid being shot down, chanching your bank 45 60 degrees evrey 5 10 seconds helps a lot. The roll rate of the mig is slower it cannot get a firing solution. If you are high, dive and go to match 0.9. NeVer climb,
The following image is the energy diagrams of the MiG-15 and the F-86F hard wing from Boyd's book.
You can easily see that at maximum turn rate, the Sabre is superior by almost 4 deg./s. That's a huge amount but its lower thrust to weight ratio is detrimental to sustained turning. If you're in a Sabre and you can pull only 4G or less, the MiG gains the advantage because it can sustain 4G quite easily while the Sabre will slow down and lose turn rate.
This is why nose low turns and lag pursuit is necessary for the Sabre pilot, so that it can take advantage of its higher turn rate each time it speeds up/stays fast.
-
Yes, Bull, we need this badly for both the MiG and the Sabre. Note though that the manual doesn't explicitly forbid 6G above 15,000 ft but it does warn of a higher possibility of overshoot when pulling 6G above 15,000 ft. Absolute limit is still 7G.

I seem to have been mistaken. Our MiG-15bis looks as if it is a late version, but our version still has the NS-23 mm cannons despite looking as if it has the newer, faster-firing NR-23 cannons in the MiG-15bis (late) which should also have a bit more ammo. See the attached link: http://forum.warthunder.com/index.php?/topic/213739-russia-could-use-another-mig-15bis/

My thoughts exactly
Have you got any info regarding automatic air brakes, rear view mirror and ASP-3NM by any chance? When exactly they were implemented etc?
As I said before, I am not asking for these to be modeled necessaruily, I am happy with the module as it is, pretty awesome :joystick: I just wonder which version exactly have we got in the sim. My guess was early variant of MiG-15bis...
Also, can anyone confirm that OSP-48 (blind landing equipment) is installed? I am aware of the NDB possibilities and ARK-5, the RV-2 is also installed and so is the MRP-48. I am not sure though if that makes our MiG an all-weather fighter and if blind landings are possible at all.
We have a relatively late version of the MiG-15bis actually (mid/late 1951), although to be more accurate, it should probably have the RWR (late 1952/53). This version has the newer, faster-firing NR-23 and N-37 cannons. You can tell by looking at the bulges on the sides of the plane. Also, I think the automatic speed brake capability was installed ever since the MiG-15bis entered service.

Yeah like I said, just my opinion on the switchology subject.
I think that thread you're talking about concluded with someone at belsimtek saying something like, "We hear our customers concerns and are looking into how best to proceed." Something very non-commital like that...which is a shame because I read that as "we'll look into weather or not it's worth the effort to fix it."
I only had a semester of aeronautical engineering, but I have flown multiple airframes and know that if you have laminar flow over a cambered surface you create lift. Right now it's very noticeable when you come in for a ground attack run you can jam on the rudder and don't get so much as a wiggle in the nose. It does happen closer to the transonic speed range, so maybe something's going on with the shock wave created by the canopy or something...and I'm always willing to learn...but it sure seems wrong to me.
Well this is true, but the question is, how much lift and how much moment? we all know there is something wrong with the rudder, but none of us have had the time or capability to actually prove it. I'd like to look into it myself, but I really don't think I have the time to delve back into my stability and control text book to find out just yet. I really really hope that thread is making Belsimtek look into the rudder too.
EDIT: Perhaps we should get the mods to rename this thread "Windshield, Rudder and lack of Over-G super thread" :P
-
Yes, first and foremost should always be the flight model.
However, I don't remember that thread ever concluding that there was actually something wrong with the rudder. Although, yes, intuitively, it feels like it's not doing anything. But was there anything I missed?
And yes, it's your opinion that we want them to "waste time", but when it comes down to visibility, and the most realistic F-86F out there in a sim, I personally don't think it's wasting time.
-
Thanks Zeke, that has been my experience. The Sabre only has the advantage of running at alt if you get into trouble. When you start turning with him low you are mostly done. Axe, I think the 2 to 1 ratio was vs Russian pilots. I don't believe the Mig 15 had as big of an advantage as it does in the sim or I just suck at dogfighting.
I can't cite the sources now, but I believe the kill ratio against all MiG-15's was around 3.5:1 or 2:1. Against just Russian pilots, I believe a non-profit historical research organization called RAND found that the USA:USSR kill ratio was in favor of the Americans at 1.3:1. This suggests that the American and Soviet pilots were equal.
To add to the discussion, something that you have to focus on with the Sabre is nose-low maneuvers whenever possible as well as lag pursuit. I cannot stress enough that many Sabre pilots end up getting outturned because they are not using their altitude to turn in a spiral dive or are just blowing all their speed for a first shot. Lag pursuit is key if you want to save energy!
If you focus on following a MiG rather than leading it, then you can get a shot before you get too slow. I feel the Sabre has all the tools to deal with a MiG, but it's harder to fly successfully because it's so tempting to get slow and just turn. I find that a Sabre can run away easily, but I have managed to catch all but one MiG in a climb by just accelerating near level flight and pulling up to get behind a climbing/escaping MiG.

I'm thinking that if they revised the windshield shape to be skinnier at the top and they put the proper armor plate frame then the compass would interfere less because it would be placed behind said frame. We'd also get a small addition in visibility from the side windows.
-
Thanks for linking your old thread, Fox. I wish I could say have hope, but I think youre right. Hopefully more people back us up on this though.

F-86F windshield
I started a new thread here since I feel the other one was too old.
Now that Belsimtek has decided to commit more time to the Mi-8 and F-86, I'd like to reiterate the fact that the current Sabre canopy is incorrect and should be fixed. I'm having trouble finding F-86F cockpit pictures, so if anyone has F-86F-35 interiors, please post them here. The best I could find was the black and white image below.
Note that the windshield armor plate has a significant effect on how the cockpit looks. The two frames that make up the windshield should also be closer together at the top as depicted below.
Finally I noticed that the compass that is in front of our faces in the DCS module is off to the side in most F-86 interior shots, though I can't find pictures specific to our Sabre. I'm lead to believe that the compass should be off to the side though.

Yes, I like the JASDF skins. It'd be nice to have more of them.

Nice. Downloading now.

To be honest I find it extremely easy to dogfight the F-86 in the MiG-15bis, I just try to keep my speed above 600 km/h and because of the MiG15's excellent energy retention, acceleration and insane climb rate (seriously it feels like its' got a rocket strapped to its back), I can even beat the F-86 in a sustained turn fight taking place mostly in the horizontal - and if he tries to yo yo with me he's dead.
The key to beating the F-86 in a horizontal turn fight with the MiG is to maintain a steady medium pull in pitch (do NOT pull until the aircraft buffets - it'll bleed all its' speed in no time), and dip the nose down abit now and then in the turn to keep the speed up. That way you can quite easily keep the speed above 600 km/h in the MiG and actually maintain a better STR than the Sabre. If you ever get below 500 km/h however don't despair, the MiG accelerates like a rocket, and it'll actually accelerate whilst pulling some Gs too.
Doesn't help the Sabre that its' guns are hopeless underpowered atm (something needs to be done about that, its' not realistic atm IMHO), which means that in the MiG you can also be abit more careless about crossing infront of it - whilst the Sabre only needs to be hit once or twice by that 37mm gun to get wrecked.
I'm finding the opposite. I can disengage and restart the fight at will and almost each time the MiG makes a mistake in a climb or something, I can at least damage it. If the Sabre pilot tries to knife fight with you, then he's usually going to lose. The Sabre's combination of higher top speed and better maximum turn rate allow the Sabre pilot to disengage much more easily at almost anytime and there's little a MiG can do about it. I've managed to follow MiGs in gentle lag pursuits if they don't pull maximum G's. If they DO pull max G at the wrong time, you bet the Sabre can take the first few turns. If the F-86 is in lag pursuit as much as possible, it can even follow MiGs in a zoom climb. Most of my victories come from this. Patience.
If the Sabre pilot gets impatient, then he's likely to get shot down. Force him into a rolling scissors and slow it down to as slow as possible. Forcing the Sabre to slow down is the key to defeating a Sabre pilot who is willing to get slow too. Another great strategy in the MiG is to turn very widely and let the Sabre pilot think he can outturn you and then slowly pull harder as the fights slows down. I can't tell you how tempting it is to think you can outturn someone only to have them peel away. At this point the smart F-86 pilot will know just when to disengage and gain a tad bit of separation and altitude.
-
Yeah I've seen the crash course one, but when the Sabre lands, it's forced into a ridiculous skid. The original poster's F-86 manages to actually physically slow down to a stop.
And what it the heck is happening in the last video. 17 knots? Since when were Sabres VTOL planes? There's something fishy there. That shouldn't be possible. I guess it's the weird weather right?
-
Holy cow. I am determined to learn how to do this. Do you have a Tacview file?
-
Sweet, thanks Zeke! I added you on Steam. Let me know what time slot best for you. Also I don't think we can use the 39th TS3 unless Bull is there.

Hi everyone, I posted in the MiG-15bis sub forum but I just realized it might get more attention here. Original thread: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?p=2356144#post2356144
Hey everyone,I was wondering if anyone would be interested in being my sparring partner. I fly the F-86F and I need a lot of practise, tips and help. I just got Tacview so I'd find it very beneficial to dogfight with someone on a semi-regular basis.
I'm usually on Friday afternoons just around 1pm-3pm, Eastern time (that's GMT -5 hrs, current offset, -4 hrs). I'm also on either Saturday from 11am - 2pm, but am more or less free for most of the day on Sunday.
If anyone is interested in beating up my Sabre with their giant cannons, let me know! I fly under 39th_GalmOne online. So 39th guys, if anyone with the MiG is interested, let me know.
