LO's F-15 vs. the F-15 Streak Eagle
SwingKid replied to D-Scythe's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
F = m * a If anyone wants to know how much thrust Lock On's F-15 is really producing, simply measure its acceleration on the runway, and divide by its weight. Good luck.. -SK -
LO's F-15 vs. the F-15 Streak Eagle
SwingKid replied to D-Scythe's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
It bothers me that the "0.5 minutes" claimed on the Dash-1 climb chart is regardless of aircraft weight - and this grossly approximate and obviously unreliable number makes up 30% of the proof. Meanwhile, my opposing finding is using a reference measured accurately to the individual second and pound, and over a more tightly defined altitude band, where errors have less chance to "smooth out" by averaging. I do believe that ED used the best data that was available when the F-15 SFM was first developed. However, I don't believe that the Dash-1 climb chart can any longer be considered the best reference for our purposes today. To say that we did the best we could at the time, and nothing can be done about it now, and ED is working on Black Shark - I would agree, and am happy to drop all argument about the F-15 performance. But to say that the Lock On F-15 is producing the correct thrust, and the Dash-1 climb chart is proof of that, and the Streak Eagle records are less useful than the Dash-1 climb chart - it's a belief I had myself in the past, and was forced to reject by the evidence. I invite anyone to reconsider. Kuky, I rep you for your independent experiment. But - what was your speed, at 25,000 feet? -SK -

LO's F-15 vs. the F-15 Streak Eagle
SwingKid replied to D-Scythe's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
F100-PW-100 is rated at 23,830 lbs each with afterburner, but the Streak Eagle added about 2500 lbs per engine with the use of the Vmax switch that GG mentioned. F100-PW-220 delivers 23,450 lbs each with afterburner. http://www.ecf.utoronto.ca/~pavacic/lomac/dragind1.jpg http://www.ecf.utoronto.ca/~pavacic/lomac/dragind2.jpg http://www.ecf.utoronto.ca/~pavacic/lomac/scan0183.JPG -SK -
LO's F-15 vs. the F-15 Streak Eagle
SwingKid replied to D-Scythe's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
For the record - Comparing against the Streak Eagle records was not my idea, but rather the suggestion of an Eagle crew member. The same crew member was of the opinion that with the CFTs removed, the F-15E would easily out-perform the Streak Eagle, by virtue of its higher-rated engines. However for "political" reasons, USAF F-15E pilots are forbidden to do so, since this would reduce the apparent relative superiority of the F-22, when it breaks those records in the near future as planned. The question should not be whether the F-15C behaves like the Streak Eagle, but rather whether it behaves more like the Streak Eagle than it does like the Lock On F-15. And it does - the unclassified Dash-1 manual of the F-15 specifies how much the performance is degraded by weapons pylons, various stores, even the presence/absence of engine exhaust "turkey feathers" (IIRC). As D-Scythe correctly estimates, the degradation is very small, nowhere near the ~30% we see here. Taken together, there is plenty of unclassified material available for verifying F-15C performance in Lock On - for anyone who wants to. To suggest that flawed research is inferior to no research is indicative that we don't. -SK -

Good question! The exhausts of Kh-25 series missiles emerge angled to either side, and the gases can thus be ingested by the Su-25 engine inlet. The heavier Kh-29 series has an axial exhaust that is less likely to be ingested. So, Kh-29 can be mounted closer to the engine nacelle than Kh-25. -SK -

-SK

Work continues, I'm just no longer able to post about it. :( Thanks for remembering me nonetheless! -SK -

Ok this one has also come up before: If the seeker has a rotationally asymmetrical field of view (I've heard it described by Falcon 4.0 enthusiasts as "keyhole-shaped"), then why can the seeker be mounted in different orientations like that? Mustn't it have a rotationally symmetrical field of view? -SK

-SK

If I'm not mistaken, I think Chizh once commented that this weapon never entered service. IIRC, the Kh-29 was found to be a more appropriate match than the Kh-25 for the TV seeker's characteristics. Note that neither would be a real Maverick analogue, since they lack the shaped-charge warhead for penetrating armor. -SK

05-08/2005? Please tell only if the monograph contains real new technical information, or is rather just a translated collection from public news broadcasts (that we already read in English). Patriot had many scandals... -SK

Maybe... Was there a recent monograph series about the "Patriot" SAM? Did you think it was good? I can find no such English-language articles or books about this system, so I'm interested to know what were their sources.

I would purchase the books myself to examine, but delivery from Russia needs three or four months. :( -SK

Note - won't all the AI shoot right over the top of it? I think they aim a minimum of about 1 m above the ground. -SK
