;) "UAE's F-16s Will Be Envy of USAF Pilots; Block 60 defensive electronics system is the first designed to thwart Russian-made SA-10 and SA-12 missiles The first of a type of foreign aircraft sale that has worried U.S. military officials for years has finally been made. The U.S. is selling the United Arab Emirates a better aircraft, the Block 60 F-16, than any similar fighter flown by its own forces. ... The Block 60 F-16 will have several features sure to be envied by U.S. pilots, said a Lockheed Martin official: ... -- An electronic warfare package that includes the most advanced electronic countermeasures and radar counter-countermeasures. The aircraft's radar counter-countermeasures system is the first operational system with an ``adaptive cross-polarization capability against coherent monopulse Doppler radars,'' the Lockheed Martin official said. Less technically, that means the Block 60 will have a defensive system especially designed to foil the most advanced double-digit surface-to-air-missiles. Double-digit SAM systems include the 80-120-mi.-range, Russian-made SA-10s and SA-12s and the emerging S-400 family of missiles with an advertised range of up to 240 mi. The radar's electronic counter-countermeasures use spread-spectrum techniques to see through jamming. In all, the EW system offers 11 new or updated technologies for foiling radars and radar-guided missiles..." Aviation Week & Space Technology. New York: March 13, 2000. 3.
B-1B: "The component parts of the B-1B bomber’s electronic countermeasures (ECM) suite, for example, tested well individually. But when placed in position aboard the aircraft they interacted with each other in perverse ways that demanded redesign of components as well as the system as a whole." http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/library/congress/2000_hr/000510-mcnaugher_may_10.htm -SK
  8. There isn't really a "burn-through" in the popular sense (at least, not as represented in Lock On - that model is a simplified compromise between real-world ECM and ECCM tactics that aren't modeled). The HOJ missile generally homes onto the jamming signal all the way to impact, just like a Sidewinder homes onto heat emissions all the way to impact. Generally speaking, any missile with a monopulse seeker can accomplish HOJ. These include: R-23/24R (AA-7 Apex), R-27R (AA-10 Alamo), RVV-AE (AA-12 Adder), AIM-7M Sparrow III and AIM-120 AMRAAM. Most other missiles use some form of conical scan seeker, that is generally more vulnerable to modulated ECM. It gets more complicated than that though. For example, the older AIM-7F uses a conical scan seeker, but still retains some HOJ capability against simple "pure noise" jamming. Meanwhile the R-23R has a monopulse seeker, but can be defeated with somewhat more sophisticated velocity gate pull-off (VGPO) deception jamming (DECM). The Su-27's Sorbtsiya jammer features a "terrain bounce" method that may work even against monopulse seekers - at least at low altitude over water, where surface reflections are high. "Burn-through" itself is a term from Vietnam, that applies more to standoff jamming (e.g. B-52s in a "cell" providing mutual coverage for each other) involving command-guided missile systems like the SA-2, in which the missile doesn't actually carry a homing seeker at all, and all the ECCM takes place at the ground radar. What it refers to is the moment when the jamming from a single aircraft can be distinguished from the jamming of the other aircraft in the group - allowing that single aircraft to be targeted in angle. Even in this case, the range to the target is still unknown, hidden by the target's own jamming. Cheers, -SK
;) -SK
  12. "feet?" I think the Mission Editor is showing you meters. -SK
;) -SK
  14. MiG-29K is a MiG-29M derivative, it supports 8: "8 х РВВ-АЕ 8 х РВВ-АЕ + ПБ (подвесной бак)" http://aerodrom.altnet.ru/avia/fighters/russia/mig29.php -SK
  15. Exactly. "Masso-gabaritny" means that it weighs exactly the same as the real missile (unlike "white" models, that may be filled with air). So, the pylon can support its weight, the aircraft can fly with its drag, and the weapons system can control its seeker - what remains to doubt? -SK
  16. It's hard to believe "rumors" when there are photos of the opposite looking right at us. That is NOT an airshow MiG. Red missiles are normally used for separation testing, not for static displays. They don't have warheads, but they must have the same weight as the real missile, otherwise they are wasting time and money flying with them. They are red because they need to be easily found on the ground after launch/jettison. They only appear at airshows when the missile is still in testing, and no white ones have been made yet. They are NOT made specially for airshows. -SK
  17. The red ones are usually test missiles. I think they're painted to be easier to find after launching. More to the point - the 8 Su-27 pylons are connected to the Su-27 weapon system, which does not support the R-77. The four inner MiG-29S pylons are connected to the MiG-29S weapon system, which does. Which weapon system are the outer two MiG-29S pylons presumed to be connected to? -SK
  18. Therefore, MiG-29S shouldn't carry R-77 on ANY pylons? :) -SK
:) -SK
  20. That's interesting - where did you find the fence object? I didn't think they were located in the scene files... Nice base. :) -SK
  21. I'd also like to see a few versions of HEMTT, for a Russian CAS helo sim. -SK
  22. It's interesting that many peoples' definition of what it is, seems to be based decisively on what it is not. There's a piece of chalk on my desk. It certainly isn't a pencil. Therefore, it's a space station. :) QED -SK
  23. I'll tell you when it's finished. ;) -SK
