1. what is he difference between the sm ans sm3?
2. He is working on that!
3. what is this some kind of deflector for the exhaust? from the paralay boards. http://www.findpatent.ru/patent/230/2300655.html
4. I’m with you on that man.
5. So what are the advantages of a diamond wing like the f-22s over a swept wing like the su-27 when doing high alpha turns? The raptors wings are basically deltas so are they draggy at high alpha or not very good at sustained turns? Like for example everybody says that a mirage is good on instantaneous turns, but bad in sustained because of the high drag of the deltas. So how was that "drag" overcome by the Eurofighter and rafale?
6. If you look at it, you see that he does something like a tail slide but instead of letting the jet slide back he gets on the burners and starts to climb! I haven't seen a su-30 do that! The su-35 pretty much fixes the problems on the su-30mki. Less weight, better TWR, better flight control system, Less drag etc. Here you can see the v shape movement of the nozzle but also its differential movement. I think this video is not just air stuns; it pretty much shows that you can trow the thing around without worrying about things like stalls and flat spins. Legacy fighters don't have that level of safety and controllability. I think that the su-35 and su-30 tvc could be also useful on rolling scissors maneuvers or in circumstances when you want your enemy to overshoot you. The su-30 has tvc but lacks the power the su+35 has; that is why the indians are working now on what they call super su-30mki; they are going to make a two seat version of the su-35 by modifying their mkis. The russian had a 360tvc engine for the flanker, but apparently its development got stopped. Some speculate that it is due to lack of funds and that the 360 tvc nozzle deforms the jet-stream thus making it less effective than the solution used on the su-30 mki and su-35. See it here: http://forum.keypublishing.com/showthread.php?t=47848 Now one advantage of the raptor is its wing area. That I think could give it a better chance against a su-35 at high altitudes. Of course; there is also the stealth. That is why the russians are still working on their t-50. The 35 is like a stop gap while they get their t-50 ready; and it looks like a very good measure even when compared with new fighters like eurofighters, rafales; f-22s and f-35.
7. Another reason why the concord didn’t use turbofans was that the turbofan created more drag because of the big fan in the front in comparison with the turbojet. The question is how much better is a Diamond wing than a swept wing like for example the su-27’s wing or a regular delta.
8. Jet engine parts with explanations! Cool channel to look at:
9. I think the problem is more complex than that; I wish I knew the math involved! so my questions are: The raptor has diamond wings; how does that affect its turning performance? compared to the delta on the Eurofighter. How do you account for fuselage lift and wing area in those calculations? THe wing in both change (Slats go down) while the aircraft is maneuvering how do we calculate the effects on the slats going down. What about other surfaces movement; interaction and drag? Wing profile? the raptors wing has some interesting shape; spacialy that pronaunced washout http://images.search.yahoo.com/images/view;_ylt=A0PDoV5rHytQVkoABKGJzbkF;_ylu=X3oDMTBlMTQ4cGxyBHNlYwNzcgRzbGsDaW1n?back=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.search.yahoo.com%2Fsearch%2Fimages%3Fp%3Df-22%2Bwing%26n%3D30%26ei%3Dutf-8%26y%3DSearch%26fr%3Daaplw%26ri%3D1%26tab%3Dorganic%26ri%3D1&w=500&h=473&imgurl=www.worldaffairsboard.com%2Fattachments%2Fmilitary-aviation%2F24454d1298569785-f-22-wing-area-plan.jpg&rurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.worldaffairsboard.com%2Fmilitary-aviation%2F58838-f-22-wing-area.html&size=33.1+KB&name=Thread%3A+F-22+wing+area%3F&p=f-22+wing&oid=7d4969d879d9771d19362fd358341af5&fr2=&fr=aaplw&tt=Thread%253A%2BF-22%2Bwing%2Barea%253F&b=0&ni=84&no=1&ts=&tab=organic&sigr=12cb3cvbv&sigb=13etbglpv&sigi=130h5bt8f&.crumb=uzNVdKerxPm
10. su-34 demo at the 100th anniversary Looks very agile!
11. I wonder why all the mig-23 shoot down on youtube fly like sitting ducks; they just go low and slow without any regard for their safety. The syrian government says it was a failure; but it looks like it was hit by antiaircraft guns. Now that I look at it; is that a two seater mig-27? Is there a two seats mig-27? or is it one of those mig-23 hybrids?
12. Syrian MIG-23 down I’m surprised no one posted this!
13. Well we use this; mostly during night operations 80% of them are conducted at night; I don’t think that the ka-50 is up to that type of operations :(
14. What blowed me away was the landing procedure; totally amazing how the managed to do it! Imagine if they had more resources to work with!
15. k-fir; blackhawks; tucanos of the Colombian Air Force
16. Daredevils? they got no choice; they operate far from the well appointed airports and controlled areas of the center and north of colombia. Without the dc-3s and this pilots the whole Colombian Amazon communities would be cut from civilization and would cease to exists. The Aeronautica Civil (Civil Aeronautic Administration of Colombia) had tried to ground the dc-3s before; but there is nothing to replace this aging veterans. I can’t think of a single modern civilian airplane with the performance; capacity; toughness and cost efficiency better than the Dc-3. Some Dc-3s have been converted to turboprops; but that comes with a cost few airlines and pilots can afford. Converting to turboprop means that those mechanics won’t be able to fix the airplane like they do in that small shop they show on the video. About piloting skills; it is very likely that this pilots mechanics and flight crew; have more experience than anyone else in the world; They don’t look fancy or anything though. Actually ,the Dc-3 pilot with more flight hours on the type was a colombian; don’t quote me on the number; but it was a ridiculous big one. The filming crew provably cut some of the procedures the pilots do before landing; all of them do a check pass before landing; after all they land on a grassy field; were you can run into; dogs, chickens, cows, little kids playing soccer, etc. Everything gets hauled by the old Douglas, all the buildings you saw on the little towns were more likely brought piece by piece by them. Here is another video; shame that the captions suck so much; it pretty much details the whole story of the Colombian Dc-3.
17. My opinion is the following: The raptor is not the invincible; any airplane on a dogfight can be defeated; you call it flanker; eurofighter or raptor. Once you get to the visual range engagement anything can happen; It becomes a game of who can use what they got best than the other. Having the best airplane does not awards you victory. What if you loose sight of the enemy? no matter how advance your raptor is; you are toasted if you loose visual; even with the great array of sensors on the raptor. The eurofighter is a good airplane but it is not in the same level of performance of the raptor; but it is close enough to be a big treat to it. In other words any 4th generation fighter could be deathly agains the raptor; specially with missiles like python; r-73s and sidewinders. The raptor game is to go higher; faster; launch its missiles first; undetected or at least without getting locked. The raptor might be optimized to fight in those conditions; once the fight turns into a merge; the raptor advantages diminish. Sure it has better engine power; but it doesn’t have helmet mounted sights; so it needs to point its nose towards the enemy; and that takes time. Sure it has lots of wing area; but the eurofighter is has a big delta wing. TVC? Cool the raptor has it; giving it better instantaneous and sustained turn rates; but it could play agains you if you get too slow; specially against a fighter that has good acceleration like the eurofighter. Now lets look at the raptor situation. Its development took lots of time. There are 4th generation jets that have more advanced and modern instrumentation than the raptor. Look for example the f-16 offered to india; or to not going too far the f-35. I don’t think that the raptor has that type of technology on it; specially because it is a 90s airplane. Add to the problem that it is so expensive that it has not been upgraded like it should have. No helmet mounted sights; no AIM-9X. Even the upgraded radars on the f-15c’s have better detection range than the f-22 radars. The raptors is the first stealth fighter; and because of that is the pioneer; being the pioneer also brings problems; lets not forget the history of the Comet. It was the first; but ended up facing unforeseen troubles; and that is what is happening to the raptor right now. It can’t fight as high as it was designed for because of oxygen problems; pilots have less hours on it, there are few raptors etc.
18. Su-27 documentary; it shows that a prototype flanker flew after loosing part of its wing. It is cool that they explain why the flanker is so agile; on a side note they also mention that the the Wrights brothers aircraft was a dynamically unstable aircraft! those guys were out of the ordinary!
19. There is reports that pilots still think that the problem persist. It might be that the out of ordinary performance of the raptor is creating unexpected physiological conditions on the pilots. This jet stays at higher altitudes than any other fighter; super cruises most of the time; and due to that, it is more likely to be pulling gs more often than a 4th generation fighter; this aggravated by the high altitudes could be too much for the human body after all.
20. What is wrong with it?
21. It also looks like the g suit is preventing pilots from breathing better; perhaps this is consequence of the high g and high speed performance of the raptor; think about it. This jet most likely is flown at higher altitudes and speeds that a regular f-16. It also stays at higher speeds for a greater amount of time than a regular fighter; so the pilot is more likely to be pulling more gs that a previous generation fighter. To me it looks like no one expected any side effects after increasing the performance on 5th generation fighters.
22. Diesel; they smoke that bad when the ship starts to move; at least that was the explanation at the Key publishing aviation forums.
23. It just needs a more powerful engine.
