  2. How do they really stack up against one another in capability? Maybe this Tweaktown article can clear the haze a bit in the two alternate GPU universes of AMD and Nvidia. I wonder which coding priority DCS plans to use in it's future engine. Here's a quote from the article: "Now, what does all this have to do with your gaming? – Well, it comes into play when you consider how game engines are coded. If the game code is all small and simple instructions, then the AMD GPU has a very large upper hand, even considering the faster speed of the NV shaders. If the game code is in complex and bulky blocks then AMD only has 320 stream processors that can execute that code and then at a significantly slower speed. This problem has come to light more and more in the world of GPGPU computing, but is also starting to show up in gaming situations." Read the whole article here: http://www.tweaktown.com/articles/3029/amd_vs_nvidia_are_they_even_playing_the_same_game/index.html Maybe some of you tech guys can interpret this for the rest of us? ;) Flyby out
  3. hmmm....sounds like a new techno-thriller on the horizon: "Mercenary fliers take on a South American despot, with the goal of eliminating his fledgling fighter force before it can threaten the regional peace. That air force has been secretly updated to near fifth generation capability, and is overseen by a surrogate team of technicians from an unnamed benefactor country. The mercenary squadron's leader, Biff (call-sign "Slash") Masters and his XO Babs "Hooters" Hollister must operate from clandestine airfields, and try to decimate a clearly equal foe before 7th Hell breaks loose and engulfs the region in flames" :P Flyby out
  4. Kuky and Ivan, Thank you for your inputs. It's increasingly clear that life with Win7 (64bit) is a step up, but that it offers some of the usual challenges that come with a new OS (like Kuky's ATi/v-sinc work-around issue. Kuky, can you give a bit more detail about this issue, and solution? Maybe someone else has information beneficial to this problem? I'd be starting from scratch with my new gaming rig, including a new GPU, mobo and OS. Win7 just seems the obvious selection. Thanks to you guys again for sharing. Flyby out
  5. No issues with your games or gaming equipment, or drivers and stuff? Flyby out
  6. good to hear that, Mustang. I guess I can sell my copy of Win-ME and use the spare change to finance Win7. :D Flyby out
  7. well I think...oh never mind!:music_whistling: Flyby out PS any ideas on how the Su35 really stacks up against the upgraded Eagle? I'll assume it's more maneuverable, but I don't really know that. Weapons systems, maybe?
  8. that's a spot-on observation about that cockpit seat, Topol-m :D rgrt, Lewis. I shudda checked that article date more closely. agree with your views too. I also agree with Veljko. it's about the bucks ($$$$), and politicians who get huge contributions for their lackey-ism (self-serving ***tards! Flyby out
  9. nothing new??!! I wonder if Venezuela (Hugo Chavez) will order a few squadrons of them just to annoy the U.S? Maybe Cuba? It is conducting defense exercises designed to repel a U.S. invasion. A plane that can target multiple ground targets might come in handy for Raoul. ;) anyway it's an interesting multi-role fighter. I'd like to learn more about it's capabilities. Flyby out
  10. a link to the latest on the Su35 story: http://rt.com/Art_and_Fun/2008-07-07/Su-35_fighter_jet_flies_into_the_future_.html?gclid=CJT6z46Uq54CFRDxDAodgTh0nQ thoughts? coffee? :D Flyby out
  11. agreed! Yeah, I think Hydra will be awesome. It's competitive performance will be good for consumers. Maybe it will spur ATi and Nvidia to take another look at their packages? Flyby out ps I apologize for apologizing. :megalol:
  12. juar imagine For those mission builders among us this is liable to be a great new twist. Imagine breathers flying the Su25T performing SEAD for Black Sharks so they can close in and be close air support for friendly forces. Can that happen now? Imagine flying the fast movers high overhead to ward off the other guy's fast movers. I wonder how many players can be supported online? Flyby out
  13. well done! This thread is proving to be very informative. I thank all who respond/reply. Perhaps someone will one day create a sticky thread for Win7 use (not this one obviously). Anyway, I'm learning a lot from your replies, and just wanted to add a "Well done!!" Flyby out PS spread the word to keep them coming. All exeriences and questions are welcome.:)
  14. hi M.I.C. Actually I was saying some people might see the mix-and-match of GPUs as a gimmick. That statement was unintentionally misleading on my part. I apologize for that. Hydra has demonstrated that aspect of it's technology works quite well. I saw one graph where an ATi and an Nvidia card worked quite well together under Win7 (because that OS allows for the use of each card's driver). Now, it seems that Lucid needs to upgrade it's software to run better in Win7, as it was stated that most of the development was done under Vista. I am sort of an Nvidia fan, but the reasons for that are long outdated (superior OpenGL performance). Now I'm looking to go with whichever company meets my price/performance needs. For instance, I was leaning towards the GTX285, but why do that if the 5850 is a match for it, and out-performs it in price? Then there's the 5870. Nvidia has been slow to release details of it's GT300 series, and late out the gate with production models, though ATi has a problem with supplying enough 58xx cards to take advantage of Nvidia's slothful ways. Both companies seem not to be able to secure sufficient quantities of those 40sm wafers. It all makes my brain swell!:( Flyby out
  15. more related links Hydra is looking a bit more hopeful as we hear more from around the web: http://hothardware.com/Articles/Lucid-Hydra-200-MultiGPU-Performance-Revealed/?page=1 http://www.pcper.com/article.php?aid=815&type=expert&pid=1 but still mor testing seems to be in order. ;) Flyby out
  16. hi M.I.C, I was wondering if the article might have put people off somehow from responding. Thanks for your input. Maybe the concept does not come across well for simmers (whose gaming satisfaction is more CPU intensive)? Perhaps the added cost is not justified beyond X-Fire or SLi. Maybe the "mix-and-match of GPUs" concept seems too much a gimmick? I guess we'll have to wait for more testing and results to be posted about he web. I'll keep a look-out. Flyby out
  17. Tech Report got it's hands on a Hydra rig and ran a few numbers. ought to be worth a comment or two. ;) http://techreport.com/articles.x/17934 Flyby out
  18. none of us is as smasrt as one of us! Looks as if I'll be budgeting for the full version of Win7 Home Premium. I'll have to get the mom-in-law to drink faster so I can get more cash for recycled aluminum cans! BTW, I thought i saw where Win7 HP has no built-in backup. Am I wrong? Flyby out
  19. hi asparagin, Sounds like a happy beginning to me. What version of XP did you move from? Was it an upgrade, or a clean install? Flyby out
  20. ah yes. lesson learned. Flyby out
  21. and a good OS it is. ;) All my sims ran very smooth on WinXp-32bit. I'm hopeful to have as good an experience with Win7. We'll see.:) Flyby out
  22. Well I guess I don't win the weekly "Scoop" award! I knew it was too good to be true; trying to get one up on this crowd.:music_whistling: Oh, only my wife is allowed to call me a lazy-good-for-nothing!:D Hey RockStar! How are ya? Been a while.:smilewink: Flyby out
  23. phew! Thanks CyBerkut, That gives me a clear picture of what I may be in for were I to try using a Linux offshoot for purely gaming. I think I'd rather avoid atypical problems and just deal with the typical ones Windows has/will present. I'm already partitioning the few remaining active brain cells I have!:D Flyby out
  24. you guys seen this already? http://www.ch-hangar.com/forum/showthread.php?t=6773 also a link to ITSEC which mainly features simulator stuff for the military: http://www.iitsec.org/ Flyby out
