err... one more ? Anyone have any thoughts on Ubuntu as a gaming OS? I'm not famililar with it at all, so I'm asking. Flyby out -

WOW! I had seen this screen shot of the Stuka, but had not realized it was also in gif format. The prop look very good. Just one more year and I'll be over the channel looking for targets! :pilotfly: Flyby out -

I was taken by surprise to read that Oleg had abandoned OpenGL in favor of DX. I always ran IL2 in OpenGL. I have to say that the latest screens are just jaw-dropping, and I am very enthusiastically looking forward to the eventual release of SoW. But no I did not see the animated gif you speak of. Where?! Where?!:pilotfly: I do wonder what DCS has in store for us in the graphics for it's series. All things in good time, I assume. Flyby out -

that's very generous of you, FF. Much appreciated too. I'm not sure what to expect from Win7 versus WinXP, in general. My last WinXP gaming rig ran my favorite sims (LockOn/FC and IL2) pretty well flawlessly. We'll see how Win7 does. I'm hopeful Win7 and the 1366 socket will do me well for the next few years; along with DX11. Imagine DCS's flight sims with DX11. btw what do you think of Oleg's latest screens shots from Sow? you are on it today, FF! ;) So I think I'll go with Win7-HP. I'm hoping this more modern version will be stable. I'll seach the usual forums for helpful hints on any oldr sim i may want to give a go at, like Screamin Demons, or EAW. thanks to you and all the others for your replies and advice. Flyby out -

once again into the breech! Thanks for the advice. Does Win7-HP use fewer resources than it's Vista equivalent? I'll check pricing too. How important is the WinXP-mode feature for flight sims that are now several years old? Flyby out -

great feedback, all thanks for all the feedback, guys. there is some good info to absorb here. but I'm still conflicted about which version to get; the one that will offer the most benefit for a pure gaming system. I am sure I'll go 64bit. I never got to try Vista (been away from gaming for a while now). I understand it's really not so bad. So is Win7 a definite improvement over Vista? Or was Vista just disemboweled due to a bad debut which caught most without Vista-approved drivers? Flyby out -

I don't think I'll have any need for more than 6gb of ram, actually, unless some super sim study calls for it. ;) Also, isn't the OEM version limited to installation on one PC? I had the impression that if I were to build a new system on a different architecture I could not transfer the OEM win7 to that system (unless maybe some fee was paid to M$- not sure about that). If that's wrong, well cool! 8) Flyby out -

it's been so long My last version of windows (a long story) is Win-XP upgrade. I actually upgraded from WinME.:D It was a gaming 32bit system running a P4-2.8c, and a 6800 Ultra. Now I own an i7-920 (just the processor so far). I'm thinking, and someone critique me here, of going with Win7HP-64 bit. But I wonder if I'd be well served to buy an OEM version if I'm only going to game with the system? I know the HP version is limited to 16gb of system ram. I figure it will be a while before I actually need more ram than that. Also I'm looking at the ASRock X58 Extreme as a mobo, and it has the capacity to handle 24gtb of system ram were I ever to need it (but that means upgrading to some other Win7 version) which is OK by me. The OEM would save me a few bucks, but I'd be somewhat hindered in not being able to use it on more than one system (not a problem at the moment). Advice? SPare change? Flyby out -
Hi all, I'm struggling to decide which version of Win7 to buy, if at all. My goal is an OS for a system that will be primarily for gaming. OEM Home Premium? What to do? thanks! Flyby out

I didn't know Black Shark's coding supports multiple cores. I believed it was a one-core pony all this time. Are you referring to that affinity trick I've read about? Flyby out

CPU and GPU convergence; an article.

S~ Sinelnic, That's an interesting viewpoint on Nvidia. I'm not quite sure I agree totally. The Green Machine has been slow off the mark with it's GT300 series GPUs. But there may be other reasons for that. I don't think it is ready to totally capitulate the top-tier gaming GPU territory to AMD/ATi just yet. I am a bit fearful that Nvidia may release a super GPU at an unreachable price, as it did with it's 280/285 single GPU cards. AMD/ATi really beat them down in the price/performance/value race there. I do agree with you about DX10. It was not the leap that DX11 appears to be (nice video in that link too ;)). Yet I'm not sure how prevalent DX11 will be in our beloved flight sims. TBH, I don't have any other sort of gaming in my collection besides (PC) flight sims, and FS2004 is the only non-combat flight sim I own. Looking at the most recent screen shots of SoW_BoB, I'm not sure I'm looking at a DX10 engine, but I know it's not DX11. I'm not aware of what plans, if any DCS has for implementing DX11 either. My point here is, when making a decision on which GPU to buy today, the price/performance/value equation may shift to Nvidia's current generation GPU (if Nv decides it must lower the price of the GTX285 in order to compete with AMD's 5870 for sales at the top end of the GPU market) in the narrow market of flight sim-ers like me. Of course if you expand the gaming genre then the 5870 is clearly the way to go, imo, as I expect most people will. That card is a screamer. I might have to get one for my new gaming system (which is in perpetual hold due to my economic malaise). well, now i have a headache from trying to form an intelligent reply!:helpsmilie: Flyby out -

give that man a cookie! Sinelnic, old man, I'd say you broke it down pretty damn good! Thanks for the technical translation. Here in the U.S. I think this is grounds for a new cash-for-clunkers initiative. Trade in old PC tech for new PC tech.:D Hey, it could happen. thanks again, Flyby out -
This article it a bit above my pay grade, but I found it interesting to my special sort of genius.:music_whistling: One thing I found enlightening was the idea that the new Nvidia GT300 series might have 6mb of on-board memory. I wonder if this much memory will be made use of by a new GPU architecture? Memory increases do not necessarily mean more FPS, but do offer some aid at very high resolutions. Oh, but I digress. Here's the link. http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/opinion/1560330/cpu-gpu-convergence-goes Maybe someone can break down it's meaning for the rest of use? Flyby out

Wow I just won an ipod nano 8gb. I never really wanted one, but free is free, except for buying songs. Cool thing records video too. ;) anyway if you have Quicktime loaded on your pc I'd say give it a shot for transferring files from your mac-to-your-ipod-to-your-pc. I think you have to have itunes software on both though. Have at it!!!!:D Flyby out

What LCD/Monitor is everybody using?
Flyby replied to JG27_Arklight's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I can recommend the Asus VK246H (HDMI) it's 1900x1080 resolution, with 2ms response time. I got it from Newegg for $219.00. It also has a built-in web cam (I'm watching you guys!:smartass:) It received excellent owner reviews which helped me make my decision. No dead pixels, good color for a TN, bright as Hell. that rig is SMOKIN!!!!!!!:D Good work. good luck and best wishes for trouble-free gaming. :) Flyby out

still, it's nice to dream I don't know crap from crapola about which 3D engine is best suited for a low-alt sim world, but it's an easy dream to see a virtual world that looks as good as what's outside my window. IMO the whole sim world wants that. I'm not talking CPU/GPU power, or engine cost or any other kill-joy reason why it can't happen. It's what people will flock to when it finally can happen. Of course a sim-er wants all the physics modeling that makes a (combat) flight sim seem worth it's salt too.;) Be optimistic!!:D Flyby out

best of luck. keep us posted. Flyby out

congrats on the new rig. it will run games as well as an i7-9xx series system, from all the online testing I've seen. One word of caution though about overclocking, check out this link I read this morning. It may be nothing, but be aware: http://www.fudzilla.com/content/view/16000/1/ Flyby out

I'd like to see DCS develop the series to where a war of the period could be fought with weapons of the period. Hinds, and Apache-As cruising the battle line looking for prey. Imagine the fun of that! Flyby out edit: yeah it sounds like a late 80s scenario, but that's cool. WWII is still be mightily represented in the sim world.

you're right Joey. They won't happen for quite a while under the current methodology. But perhaps a little creative thinking outside that methodology box might do wonders for the time table. I know. It's highly improbable. Flyby out

Maybe DCS could contract out a few projects to this crew. It might put both ahead of the development curve. Imagine having the A10C by Spring, and the Apache Longbow/KA52 by year's end (as an example). I may be dreaming, but it's a fun dream. :D Flyby out
