  1. I WASN"T REFERRING TO ME!!!!:megalol::megalol: Flyby out ( I thought I was in another thread- how'd I wind up here?)
  2. that's a mighty big box! Flyby out
  3. well guys, Honestly I don't even own Black Shark yet, but when I (finally :music_whistling: ) get my new system built it will be the first sim I buy. If for no other reason than needing it to fly future releases. But the fighter-bomber interdiction role has had it's appeal for some time. I've never tried OFP, but I've read great things about it, and it's modding community. For years I was an avid IL2 fan, primarily flying online in squadron play, and making (rough) missions that took the moniker of "Die-by" missions. As it is I have not done any online gaming for several years now; since before IL2-1946 came out. Yeah, shameful, I know. But all I can say is "really hard times, man". Even still, I like to remain current, and plan to return as soon as I can. Heck I even bought a processor already (i7-920 with DO stepping). I want to be ready so I can really get my freak on when blasting along at low level in a (DCS) strike bird. (and make some of those "Die-by" missions ;)) meanwhile a random though pops up, and I post here and get some very interesting replies!!! :D Flyby out
  4. perhpas DCS is listening? import scripts using a script language? push AI routine into the LUA files? That's thinking outside the box, I'd say. ;) But I'd have to say that I'd settle for a manned Strike Eagle or Russian or British equivalent. Pressing an attack through enemy defenses...? I always liked a desperate situation. Flyby out
  5. Dear DCS_Tooth Fairy One day when I get older (and all my teeth have fallen from my head - I'm almost 60 now) I hope to be able to fire up my 24-core i2150 pc and fly all-weather deep penetration interdiction strikes in DCS's electronic battlefield. I hope this day comes sooner rather than later. Hope is a good thing. Toss in a bit of optimism and good things can happen. I mean if Viagra can raise the dead, then surely DCS can do this little thing.:D thank you Flyby out
  6. depending on your plans... if you plan to build a rig primarily for gaming I'd say look at the new Lynnfield processors, specifically the i7-860 or -870 processors. They are socket 1166, rather than the i7-920 which is socket 1356. The gaming performance is very close between the two, but the 1156 system is generally considered more for mainstream users, and a bit less expensive. Here is an interesting article about how the new ATi 5870 video card performs on both systems. (If nothing else read the final thoughts, but the whole article is informative) http://anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.aspx?i=3649 hope you find it useful :) Flyby out
  7. the promise remains to be seen... the link talks about Lucid's Hydra, has an interview with Lucid, ATi and Nvidia. I get the feeling from reading it that Lucid is hedging it's bets about Hydra's performance (but with my sort of genius I could have gotten the wring impression). ;) http://www.legitreviews.com/article/1093/1/ any opinions, anyone? Flyby out
  8. looks like the old multi-GPU landscape is changing. Dig it. http://techreport.com/discussions.x/17636 Here's hoping it works as promised. Flyby out
  9. now, if you were poor like me you would not have those problems! :D Obviously they are "good" problems to have. Now get back to work before I report you to the Stop-dickin'-around Cops!! ;) Flyby out
  10. holy smokes, Alex! 53fps across 3 monitors @ 2.8 ghz seems impressive to me. Keep us posted on your overclocking results. Excellent looking gaming setup you have, btw. ;) Oh, you're not running the -295 and the -260 together in SLi mode are ya? Doing the PhysX thing, maybe? Flyby out
  11. Before I ruin the wife's pc, can someone please explain to me what the MS debugger actually does, and if there are any dangers with using it? Yeah, I searched but nothing seems to spell it out in terms my particular sort of genius can understand.:helpsmilie: Flyby out edit: I found this tutorial, and looking it over provoked an involuntary gag reflex! http://mirror.href.com/thestarman/asm/debug/debug2.htm
  12. I don't even have Windows7. I just came across this and thought someone using Win7 might find it useful. Do I misunderstand your question, Kirai?
  13. I found this article about turbocharging Windows7 for gaming over at ExtremeTech. I hope some find it useful http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,2845,2348418,00.asp Flyby out
  14. yeah, it's mainly a GPU test (my bad for jumping the gun). interesting, beyond FSX about how the multiple GPUs scale. as I assemble my gaming rig, it's interesting to see how the different games scale with SLI vs Crossfire. Flyby out
  15. an interesting link about CPUs and FSX (and some others) http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/core-i5-gaming,2403-10.html Flyby out
  16. dig this found this morning, an interesting testing of CPUs with FSX (among others) http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/core-i5-gaming,2403-10.html Flyby out
  17. rgrt, I'd like to see those results anyway. Can't know too much, eh? ;) Flyby out
  18. now I've gone and done it I knee-jerked. I bought the i7-920, with DO stepping. One day i may use it to it's full potential. But I could not pass on that deal, $200.00. I'd have saved a few bucks going with the i5, and my only claim now is that I've read that the future 6-core processors will work with the current lga 1366 socket. Thus I am served with an upgrade path to something even more powerful just by replacing the processor (once I can afford it ;) ) That seems a hollow victory unless more flight sims come along that can take full advantage of all those cores beyond what performance one could get with an i5. Otherwise the i5 seems a simmer's dream, and I highly recommend it for that narrow focus. It could be a long while before we see flight sims get to where an i7 is a good path to take. Oh yeah, I opened the box. So now I can't return it. At least I have hyper-threading without having to pay for an i5-870. Now to find a good medium-cost mobo. Then look out!:D Flyby out
  19. Even overclocking the cpu, these (flight) sims only use one core. At least the newer generation of processors can be overclocked to at least 3.6 on air cooling, thus one core at 3.6 is fairly speedy. The sims seem to respond to that, but they are not coded to use multiple cores. Let someone test the i5s on ROF, which is coded to use multiple cores. For us flight simmers, that might be a more relevant test, imo. Flyby out
  20. look to the new i5. It games just about on par with the i7, and ahead of the 955. Check out recent topics in this forum. Flyby out
  21. but, wait!! there's more! recent links to titillate: http://techreport.com/articles.x/17513 http://www.techreport.com/articles.x/17545 just in case someone is still interested. ;) Flyby out
  22. Rgrt with the online hookup. ;) I'll be pulling more components together as cash flow allows. I've been looking at a few decent overclocking motherboards: Gigabyte, ASRock, and MSI. Not top tier boards but meeting my modest needs to overclock an i7-920 to a useful 3.6 ghz. I was close to going with an AMD Phenom II x4 965, but the i7 cost about $65.00 USD less (@ $200.00 UDS) so what could I do? :D Flyby out
  23. Oh, and it's got the DO stepping. I was amazed at the size of the cooler that came with it. I understand the stock cooler is inadequate for overclocking. I won't be going wild, but am looking at around 3.6ghz. I haven't seen where going much beyond that point yields any significant results for gaming. Anyone got anything different on that point? Flyby out
  24. hey Alex! How ya been, bud? :) An average of 30fps is pretty good, I'd say, considering that rez you're running. Even water is set to maximum? That's some roaring system you have there! Hans I keep thinking of all the cycle-sucking stuff that new sims will put on new quads, tri-cores, etc. I hope Sow_BoB will be tamed by the time it comes out. Last I heard it was 80% complete so maybe cpu tech has caught up with it before it even comes out? Wouldn't it be something to run that one in all it's glory and still get decent minimum fps? Did I mention that I just coped an i7-920 for $200.00 USD from Micro Center? I guess I just committed. ;) Flyby out
  25. hi sinelnic, good stuff in that reply. I guess I only add that multi-cores will really come in handy for our combat flight sims. Not just for the low and slow scenery ( I think that's GPU rendering speeds there), but for all those little things we want "simulated" in our little combat worlds (like calculated weapons performance, clouds/weather, complex AI routines -with lots of AI participants-as in intelligent targets/adversaries/flight members, radars, laser designators, FMs, etc). To me these are where multi-cores will receive the most stressing. But I want that orgy of beautiful graphics too! :D Are you familiar with this site? http://www.devmaster.net/forums/index.php I found it while searching for info on coming 3d engine tech.
