Considering there is a pretty solid definition of what an arcade flight game entails, you just can't group the FC series with them. The list of features and mechanics about FC vastly separates it from arcade, as opposed to the minute bit thats missing that would deem it "hardcore".

1.2.8 Open Beta Preliminary Change Log
blkspade replied to upupandaway's topic in DCS World 1.x (read only)
In what way exactly does it fail to be the same thing? Once you've subtracted the ability to actually feel what the plane is doing, and the risk/fear of actual death do to it all being simulated, what are the benefits? -
We're just having a little fun, perhaps your humor level is a little low today.

1.2.8 Open Beta Preliminary Change Log
blkspade replied to upupandaway's topic in DCS World 1.x (read only)
It is kind of non-nonsensical to even want a dual seat/control trainer in a Sim, if you wanted to legitimately use it as such. Mostly do to the benefits of a sim make up for there being no respawns in RL. Now a genuinely functional RIO/WSO slot in a combat aircraft, that would be awesome. -
The F-15 eagle, the very best there is. When you absolutely positively have to kill every mother F'er in the sky, accept no substitutes. All that aside, most of it success was prior to the slammer

LOL.

In game, if you're forced defensive 1v1 without having gotten your own missile (ARH/ET) off at the bandit, the smartest thing to do is just keep running home. All those tricks you think you can use to recommit can work against the newer pilots but will fail 98% of the time against those who are experienced and are paying attention.
-
As far as in game mechanics are, a Russian bandit will only get LA at that range if they are at very high altitudes with the Eagle in AB. In most cases Russian drivers aren't going to be that high, and it only proves to further benefit the Eagle with 120s anyway.
-
Makes you wonder if ED will eventually make changes to certain game mechanics that will make VR headsets more suitable. Operating the Radio menu in particular. Attempting to chat in MP will be another annoyance. Especially since there is no built-in voice comms, and you can't convince everyone to use TS.
-
If you are in a good position to fire, then you are already too close to be using ECM. SA is situational awareness. AB will make you easier to track for the Russian aircraft using EOS and IR missiles. Sometimes the situation will require it though.
-
Air density was always a factor, but the missile would always reach a fixed maximum first then be effected by drag after the motor stopped. So firing at much higher target was basically penalty free.
-
While not fully realized, it is still somewhat effective. From the point of view that being lower/slower does negatively effect range. Compared to the FC2 and earlier days of getting maximum missile performance from the deck.
-
It is more accurate to say that ECM impairs a bandit's ability to engage you at ranges beyond burn through. It actually increases the range they can lock you, they just can't tell what that range is. It is actually possible to extrapolate if a bandit would be close enough to launch at before burn through in some situations, if missile performance allowed for it.
-
Basically any situation that would result in loss of radar lock also causes flood mode to fail (in game). So if the bandit enters the notch, or sometimes even turns cold while in high PRF, Flood mode will lose them. If it suddenly goes dark they probably spotted the launch and maneuvered accordingly. Or dumb luck. I have seen my AIM-7s reacquire targets after taking what seems like a temporary ballistic path, but it doesn't happen often and usually from STT.

The SU27 DACT isn't even fun since the AI, can't 'see' the AIM-9m at the distance you can fire them at the AI in burner. They'll fly head first into an AIM-9M fired at 8NM. If you're not in burner they won't fire until ~3nm.
-
You will quite consistently get smacked by the R-60 if in after burner, but they can sometimes be outmaneuvered if you have a decent amount of speed. I do the heater DACT vs the single Mig a lot. The basic trick vs the AI is to build up as much speed as you can in AB prior to reaching the within 4-6nm of the bandit. Preferably with an offset of 20-30 degrees. If you come out of AB at around that range they won't fire until they're about 2nm out. Break moderately hard and pop flares. The missile should miss, and its time for BFM vs the AI. Most of the time that results in them only getting one missile off before the merge. Other times they might get a 2nd one off, but pretty much inside rMin with you maneuvering and it misses without flares. Its pretty much the same scenario in the 2v1, you just have to figure out which one is lead since he'll engage first while the 2nd one hangs back. The trick after that it keeping track of the wingman so he doesn't get the jump on you after taking out the lead.

DISCUSSION: Feasability of planes like F-14 and F-4
blkspade replied to hvymtal's topic in How To Mod for DCS World
Given the current inability to have dual human control, you have to have an AI RIO. Which could be awesome, cause he wouldn't miss a thing. Honestly I think certain pieces are in place to make this work, even though AI functions via a certain number of cheats. Take the wingman support logic, blended with that missile warning audio cue you get with certain game mode option turned on and you're half way there. Having the AI handle sensors and intelligent target selection might be a whole other issue however. -
Asthma. If not for that I would have signed up for the USAF. It was the saddest day of my life to find out that was a disqualifier. Had perfect vision, just squeaked by the minimum height requirement (though being short is supposedly potentially beneficial to G tolerance), just to be stopped by something that only ever really affects me around hairy animals.

Yeah basically you'd never want a higher frame rate than what your screen refresh is as that tends to induce tearing. So in that respect its 'good' that we get crappy frame rates in DCS.

Next DCS (US) Fixed Wing Aircraft Wish List
blkspade replied to diecastbg's topic in DCS Core Wish List
That statement shows where you fail to see how DCS differs as whole from anything created before it. All simulators fail to bring a truly fulfilling experience when they are just a sim of this or that plane. Its not about it being 'another hornet simulation', but introducing the hornet as another human flyable aircraft to expand the whole DCS world experience. Major things that DCS world is missing are multi-role aircraft and carrier capable US aircraft. This is added to the multi-player component, where you have human opposition that will adapt, evolve, and learn from mistakes and actually challenge you to do the same. All other sims are ancient and very narrow in scope compared to what we have (could have) in DCS world. Falcon is pretty much the only other one that still exists with any kind of multiplayer presence, with a focus on modern combat aircraft that is. -
I don't think this problem is isolated to AMD GPUs. Atleast one of my squad mates disconnects and rejoins after flying for a while, with an Nvidia GPU, due to performance degradation.
-
While your point seems quite valid, on some level it falls completely out of the scope of defensive SA in the sim. The sense of urgency just doesn't exist within the sim to completely destroy your focus while defensive. What ever SA you entered the engagement with is likely to remain relatively close to the same level while defensive. Well enough practiced tactics and behaviors, tied to the constants (limitations) that exist within the sim allow for this. This is particularly true of being an Eagle driver in the sim. You know where your opponent is, what they are, and thus what kind of weapons you'll have to defend against vs range. With decent rear quarter visibility, if I knew where he was going in to the fight, I know right where to expect him should I be forced fully defensive. If its a BVR fight, then I will have forced them to defend as well (otherwise I'm doing it wrong in the first place), and so I know how they are highly likely to respond if they expect to live. That tells exactly where to put the radar, because I know he's there I just have to light him up for my missiles to do their job. At WVR ranges it doesn't change much except now looking at that volume of sky means I should actually be able to see him and what he's doing.

The only thing that has kept me personally from getting an Nvidia card is the fact I do stuff other than DCS where the AMD cards are way better. That they do nothing to resolve the engine related frame drops that happen for no explicable reason. The prices are generally better, current price gouging aside.
-
Technically speaking it is a great card. I use one with a single high resolution screen and it is kinda pushing it at that point. I had some improvement with the 7970 before it died, but still had those low points with less than desirable performance. As for overclocking it gets better if you use an aftermarket cpu cooler.
