Dear Kurfust, It would be good to know how many of those Vs were actually used in front line duties compared to the IX. If the later represented about 20% of the strength a year before (beginning of 43) I think they were in much bigger representative numbers in front line duties by the beginning of 44. Regarding the 2nd TAF not being engaged on the heavy bomber campaign my point was that as we are getting a tactical theatre (Normandy) the spit were indeed very representative as no strategic missions were flown in Normandy in 1944 (only tactical ones). In any case I agree you that if the Luftwaffe were to have its actual tactical and logistic situation represented in the sim (for the last months of the war) then the allies were going to have many boring mission unless engaged in ground pounding sorties. Finally I have to disagree with your last stamen as the spit IX we are getting were facing not a single K4 for good three months in the second half of 1944. Basically zero Kurfust facing 300+ Spit for half the period. In the end is a silly discussion as during the war there was a fluid situation with the different variants being introduced gradually and in different numbers depending on locations. So whatever the variants we get it will be representative for just a place and only a limited period of time.

First of all I want to remark that I will be happy with a 18lbs spitfire as I think it still will be very competitive against the current Luftwaffe planeset. But regarding a hypotetical 25lbs don´t see why shouldn´t be possible. So far, evidence indicates that at least 2 squadron of spitfire IX were using 25lbs boost during the summer. And that they flight combat mission across the chanel. That is more that it can be said of the Kurfust that didn´t see any action in Normandy (And that is the map we are getting). In fairness, a spit IX at 25lbs is not by any means the most representative spitfire of 1944 but the same can be said of the Kurfust if you compare its numbers during this year with the rest of the 109 that flew during the same period (And the same can be said of Dora). Not to the same extent obviously but clearly not the most representative. On the other hand, as someone has considered the p-51 that we have in DCS a 1945 version, then, I supposed, it wouldn´t hurt if we have a 1945 spit IX version with 25lbs. The available evidence shown to have been used in numbers during this year. All of this is pointles as we already have this current planeset and the spit will come as 18lbs but sometimes find very funny how logic and numbers are cherry picked to suit owns agendas (I am obviously guilty as well :P).

Well, I hardly shoot at longer than 300m and many more times closer than 200m. I don't mind losing the high end distance as more than 80% of my kills probably have being done with lots of closing speed and hardly one with the bandit increasing its distance (long distance shots). For AG I agree that longer distance is require but if you go AA as main mission, well, you want to be effective on it. Also, I hardly use K14 at all. I find the computing time too long for me and do better on the static one. With more time on it probably I would improve but as most of ww2 planes doesn't have gyroscopic sight I prefer to invest on training on them.

A little bit more of information (proving both points I think). from Bob Beamont "my part of the sky": "......We found that opening for at 200 yards was the best range for effectiveness especially when combined with harmonizing guns specifically for this range, an activity strongly deprecated by No 11 group headquarters armament branch whose rigid attitude had to be ignored by Newchurch in the immediate urgency of getting the job done....." It is related to the V1 campaign and the author was a WC. But the point is that in occasions they did ignore the white coat guys. I think the option was there but probably not open to the average enlisted pilot and likely only to commanders or very experienced pilot (normally those with higher ranks, several kills in their bags and who would fly their "own plane").

Agree. Manual settings make for a steeper learning curve. Once you master it could be even more efficient in some situations. By the way. Turbocharger management in p-47 wasn't that complicated. IIRC the turbo take over the mp over a given height (I think you control the mp by means of the turbo controller not the throttle) and even the controllers (rpm, Mp and turbo) could be linked together to move them at once. Even have a warning light in the panel that blinks when the turbo is getting to its maximum recommended rpm. Was more complex in the first series (mainly B and C) but along the way was corrected. In essence is the same. Once you master it is another instinctive set of actions you have to do.

In my opinion the option chosen of modelling K and D was a quite bad one (I understand it was the previous team option not DCS). they aren´t very representative of the luftwaffe in 1944 and that open the door now to the race for the highest boost. a D22-D28 P-47 variants facing G-6-g14 or Fw190A6-a8 would have being much more representative of the year. K and D are basically 1945 planes (or very late 44) if we speak about representative numbers. Moreover, 45 is a very misleading year when speaking about variants. The luftwaffe was either forced to throw anything it has in its inventory in order to survive and the Ta-152, D-13 or high boost K were being tested on a combat air-space. Meanwhile the allies where already focusing on post-war scenario. Normal variants were more than sufficient as Luftwaffe wasn´t a big threat anymore (still dangerous when encountered but that was quite rare for the average allied pilot). And speaking about advanced variants, the P-47N, XP-72, P-51H, Tempest II, Spit XXI..... were safely being tested hundreds of miles from the combat lines. There wasn´t any need to rush any of them into combat.

As far as I am not adammant of this race for the higher fuel/boost variants and would be very happy with a D30 on 64inch HG version. On the other hand, if the D30 would be the most representative thunderbolt of the late 44 scenario a Kurfurst or a Dora can say the same regarding the 109 or the 190?

+1 Those are the figures I´ve seen most commonly on the -59 engines on latest Ds. Something between 2430-2600HP.

Well maybe there was a bit of misunderstunding. I responded to your affirmation If I read again my answer carefully, it did said: So I am still affirm that the P-47 is a fighter in the purest sense. From the wikipedia: "A fighter aircraft is a military aircraft designed primarily for air-to-air combat against other aircraf" The thunderbolt was designed as an interceptor (a2a combat) then fullfilled the role of bomber escort (a2a combat) and only after hindered by relatively short range (for what it was needed) found its niche as a jabo.

I disagree. It was a fighter in the purest sense indeed. It didn´t fight in the same way most people think of. It wasn´t a dogfighter and relied on team work heavely but it still brought down the enemy planes in big figures as the spitfire, the yak3 the La or the mustang did. It didn´t have the power loading/wing loading to mix up in 1vs1 co energy with either 109/190 at low altitude but at altitude or in the B&Z style at low altitude was a pure fighter. It had the bonus of turning up being a superb jabo.

As far as I know the 9th wasn´t given the 150 grade fuel. Only for the 8th. So although jug with higher grade would be historical most of the flying ones (the tactical air force´s) by late 44/45 were using the 130 grade (and normal boosts). My main point in saying this (not that I am against a 8th AF on 150) is that it doesn´t change the way of fighting. The higher boost will not turn the 47 in a dogfighter. It still will have to fight on its own terms (B&Z) and the main benefit brought by the extra power will be that the exit window will be bigger. I really think that a well flown 47, regardles of the fuel and boost used, will be very competitive. Specially if sound tactics are coupled with strong team playing.

The P-47D30 in the ninth AF fought at factory boost rates. The ninth AF jugs were the more numerous in the late 44-45 scenarios They fought all sorts of 109/190 (no only the k or Dora outperformed them in speed or climb rates) at low altitude and still were very competitive. Appart from the main discrepances in FM/System, the diferencies between the Jug and the K/D will be the same as they were in the old IL2. Still you could fight very suscefully in it. The fight was mainly at low altitude too. You started high clearing the space above you and then go down picking the bandit below. Exit windows was very slim (close to nonexistant) but if you were fighting with a team mate the Jug could be absolutely lethal. 47 with the 8 fifties can kill very fast (I mean, at high speed). Controlability at high speed is very good (better than the K both at pitch in roll except when exceeding the critical match) and the M2 ballistic allows for all sorts of shots (high or low deflection at different speeds). Compared with the mustang the Jug has 33% more firepower too. As has being adressed before the visibility will be the main limitation. Not being able to spot the targets far enough could negate the advanges of the Jug. I think it will be a very competitive opponent but it will requires being quite patient and avoid the close and slow scenario so probably that will put lots of virtual pilots off.

That is my main complain: Not being able to choose your plane. Need to be cut down to one plan for making it sustainable? So it be. Is logical. But why on earth can't you choose your favourite plane. Dora flyer are gonna be happy (and many Kurfust one) but most of spit and jug flyer won't have the opportunity to get them. Why choosing one plane, if is in your reward (one plane), is not sustainable? Why I have to get another copy of mustang if I own one? What is the problem in giving me the jug instead? I understand all the reason for changing the rewards but not this. Please inform us why.

Same here. I won´t probably be flying the Dora or the Kurfust and I already own a copy of the Mustang. I don´t mind waiting for a thunderbolt as part of my pledge if only one plane is what I am getting but at least let us choose the plane we want.

In the fading days of III Reich logic was scarce. Anyhow, seems a little bit unfair that not the same degree of evidence is asked to the allies compared to the Luftwaffe in order to prove the use of higher boost.
