Ah, I didn't think of that! January 16th!
When did the F-117 have its operational debut? In the night between January 16th and January 17th, 1991! That's why we had all those Desert Storm like shots!
(Just to clarify: I'm not a conspiracy nut!)

Interesting...
Here is the list of all planes named in this thread (excluding the ones already present in the game):
- F-117
- C-141B
- CH-53E
- AH-1W
-
AMX -
F-102 - F-16A
- F-104S
- AV-8B+
-
Su-25 -
339 C/D -
M346 - F-111
-
J-22 Orao - B-2
I've barred out the ones that does not meet the criteria (no italian/european, take part in recent EU conflict).
My guess: F-111 or F-117
I'm hoping for one of those two, they'd be both great. It's just a hunch, but the recent IFE post on their Discord, regarding ED F-35 makes me think it could be the F-117.

Wonderful job as always, Admiral!
Can't wait to have the whole Italian Navy in DCS (too bad my PC decided to die right now!)
Keep up the great work and take care of yourself and your health.
Thank you very much for all of your work!

Hey guys!
First of all, thank you both for your help!
@AngleOff66 I'm not sure my Windows installation has problems, it seems to be a deeper issue, at boot level; I have the Windows USB stick for installation and tried to boot from there, but the only option that gave me was to reinstall the system. Since I wasn't sure if I'd loose my data and I still can access them, I didn't try, I'll save that as a last resort. The links you provided seems to assume that the user can still access Windows, which I can't do right now; I'm not sure I can use those procedures directly from the USB at boot. As I said, I'll leave that as a last resort option, after I backed up all my data and everything else fails.

Version B: as above, just .. your other disk is going nuts and kills the Bus, just had that yesterday on a client machine, it happens !
Version C. Your Bios is totally messed up. Make sure your Boot settings are valid for your setup ( CSM, Secure Boot, selected drive order..etc..drive )
Boot Mint, open GParted, select your NVMe, make a screenshot of the partitions it holds and report back.
Meanwhile, WHILE YOU STILL CAN, make abackup of your personal files through Mint.
* Mint, is a good choice !
Bit
I'm not at my home PC right now, so I'll confirm what I'm saying later; anyway:
A: the 970 Evo should have the C drive and the start partition; IIRC, Gparted show 3 partition, the main one with the OS, a 500ish MB reserved partition (it should be the boot partition) and a 2 MB empty partition (not formatted)
B: when I built the system I used the SSD for OS and VR games (DCS was originally installed there), a 1 TB fast HDD for other games and a 3 TB slow HDD for data storage; I then added a 2 TB NVMe 980 pro exclusively for DCS. So the only drive that has anything to do with the system should be the 970 drive (C: or, in Boot repair log nvme1n1). I don't understand why the Boot repair log says that Windows is installed in the MBR of all my disks.
C: I reset the BIOS, so it's back to the default settings, I haven't modified them back again, yet, even because it's been a long time since I first set them and I really don't remember how I modified the settings at the time, I have to reread everything and apply the needed changes. If you have any suggestions, feel free to tell me!
I'll back up my data ASAP, heck, I'll clone the entire disk!
Thank you again for your help!

@AeroGator WTF! Are you nuts? The thumb is way more precise than the flip or index fingers. Wouldn't it be possible to make it swappable like you did with one of your grips?

Hey Max!
According to this video from VKB
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f9uDSJdhQQs
you can still have the ministick under the thumb, so having up to two ministick (thumb and index finger at the same time)
@AeroGator Any idea what the price tag for the right grip replacement will be, for those of us who already own the STECS? Even a ballpark would do. And...
On 11/21/2024 at 12:47 AM, AeroGator said:We were thinking about it and tried to make it happen. However, the internals of the grip had to be changed, too, to accommodate the new PCB. So alas in this particular case it wasn't possible. Sorry.
Wasn't it possible to just create a ministick for the index finger on the original right grip, since it's already a modular spot (the MB1 slot)? I would have bought just that, the thumbstick can be turned into a hat switch via VKBdevconfig, I wouldn't have minded leaving it in there.
In any case, thanks for listening to your customers!
Now, if you would do this, too....

Hey there!
So, for some days, now, my PC won't boot Windows. I have a 500 GB Samsung 970 EVO as OS disk, and only Windows is installed.
Every time I try to boot, the PC either don't find any disk or say that there's a read error on the disk.
I used a live USB with Linux Mint to examine the disk (I'm no Linux expert at all, just the average noob) and Gsmartcontrol, if I'm reading the log correctly, says that the my SSD is healty. As a matter of fact, I can mount it on Linux and access every file and Gparted says that the file system is ok.
At that point I used another tool that comes with Mint, that is Boot Repair to analyze the boot system: unfortunately, I'm not tech savvy enough to understand if there is a problem or not. It looks like the partition with Windows (nvme1n1p1) is healty and has no boot problems, but later in the log the program list trouble with the drive sda2 and an inconcistency in sdb2.
So, is there someone in here that can help me understand if my OS disk is still working and what I have to do to boot again to Windows? I'm attaching the two logs below.
Thank you all for all the help that you'll be able to give me.
P.S. Just to be on the safe side, I changed the CMOS battery, but, aside resetting the BIOS, nothing changed.

Afterward, to keep me motivated I started texturing the Cavour. It's still a WIP. I will need assistance with aircraft parking so it may take some time to get her Battle ready.
Hey @Admiral189!
First of all, a big thank you for all the work you're doing to improve the DCS experience and, especially, for bringing the Italian Navy to DCS.
Secondly, I don't know if that's what you meant in the above phrase, but here are a lot of pictures of the Cavour, with parked aircraft too:
https://www.seaforces.org/marint/Italian-Navy/Aircraft-Carrier/C-550-ITS-Cavour.htm
On that website you can find a lot of pictures of other Italian ships (and of many more Navies around the world).
Thank you again, keep up the great work and I wish you well for your health.

And gentlemen, can anyone tell me? Which US aircraft carriers were part of Dixie Station at different times? I can't find any detailed information anywhere.
Hey @Phantom11!
This website:
has a history of any US Navy ship that ever existed (at least in modern times). You will find all of the carriers and the cruise books of many (I'm afraid not all of them) of their cruises, included the combat cruises in Vietnam.
It's not going to be easy, you'll have to read a lot, but you should be able to find many data on what carrier served in Dixie Station and when. In general, the carriers rotated between Yankee and Dixie Station, so they were not permanently assigned to the one or the other and, according to Wikipedia, Dixie station operated until 1966, when enough aircraft were land based in South Vietnam to carry on the operations in that nation.

Hey Hyperlynx.
GrafRotz offered a good source, you can also watch Mike Solyom's excellent channel: he has a playlist on BVR combat, there are videos about communications and brevity codes.
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLd5Qdmhmp3Y7wxYI4cVxcDPdswhj_Zgpi
From what I understand, anyway, most of the brevity codes we're talking here are about communications between the controller entity (e.g. AWACS) and the fighters: "judy" for example is to communicate to the AWACS that you have picked up the contact on your radar and can proceed to intercept on your own. I think it's understood that the other members of the flight have the same contact and the targeting of the individual targets is done through the sorting process (which uses the "sort" brevity code).
EDIT: add to the playlist the last two published videos, "Group brevity explained" and "Intercept commit explained"

I'm sorry, can't find this thing anywhere...
I'm going by heart, so I hope I'll remember everything (if someone spots a mistake, please correct me):
inside DCS, in the main page, look at the upper menu bar: there's a cog wheel icon, for the options menu. Once you open it, there will be various tabs, one of which is labeled "Special": click on it. Once you do, on the left side, you'll find the list of modules: select the F-4E-45MC and you should open this screen:
The option is the second to last from the top.

I Paid USD 79 for this thing and I haven't seen it flying one single time. It crashes like hell, no matter what I choose to do. Mission editor, instant action or quick mission, they all crash while loading.
Plus, I have the feeling my whole DCS instalation looks quite unstable after installing the Phantom module.
Any suggestion, sirs? Thank you
13700k - GTX4070 TI - 32MB ramHave you tried activating the "CPU: Lower HB UI Refresh Rate (Require Restart)" in the Special option menu?
I had a lot of crashes as you describe, until I tried it and it didn't he trick for me, now I have some stutter, but everything is in the normality of my DCS installation and now I can finally fly the Phantom.
I hope this can help you too.

Thanks! My interest in winged stuff that files -both virtual and real- is indirectly proportional to the amount of digital stuff in the cockpit.
I think I can enjoy the first two in your list.
You're welcome!
Sorry if most of the stuff is modern, but, although I love every era of aerial combat, lately (maybe because I mostly flew the F-18 in DCS) I read mainly books about recent wars.
I'm sure you won't be disappointed by Rasimus' books (especially the first one), but I strongly recommend Chicken Hawk, too, even if it's rotary wings: it's a truly immersive and gut wrenching memoir of the early Vietnam war (1965/1966), that delves not only into flying operations and combat, but even into the life or Army chopper pilots.

Hi all,
I thoroughly enjoyed Pierre Clostermann's WW2 memories 'The Big Show' -I have to thank @Reflected and his wonderful DCS Spitfire campaign for that- and I'm wondering if you people know of any other good books similar to this one or as enjoyable for a flight simmer.
Usually books about air war history don't go so deep into the feeling of flying and fighting in those machines and into the handling and tecnical details, and that's what I loved about Clostermann's memories. Everything sounded so familiar and yet so different -the difference between being comfortably seated at home or frozen at 15k+ feet, flipping switches and stuff with big uncomfortable leather gloves, oxigen mask and goggles, with your guts cramped in fear. Also the guy really knew how to write.
If you're not interested just in WW2 and airplanes, I can wholeheartedly recommend:
Ed Rasimus When Thunder rolled (his first Vietnam tour in the F-105)
Ed Rasimus Palace Cobra (his second Vietnam tour in the F-4E)
Robert Mason Chicken Hawk (his service in Vietnam as a UH-1 pilot)
Keith Rosenkranz Vipers in the Storm (his partecipation to Desert Storm in the F-16)
Jay Stout Hornets over Kuwait (same as above, but with the legacy Hornet and in Marines style)
Michael Franzak A Nightmare's prayer (his tour in Afghanistan as a Marine AV-8B pilot)
Dave Morgan Hostile Skies (his partecipation in the Falkland War, as a Sea Harrier pilot)
Rasimus' and Mason's books are especially good, that's why they popped into my mind first, the other ones are good too and in no particular order.
This thread is really good, we should use it to exchange titles of this kind of books and our opinions!

Hey @Zabuzard how about adding to the bombing calculator the ability to calculate the pipper depression for air to ground attacks with the Vulcan? That'd be very useful.
EDIT: Also, would it be possible to add to the kneeboard pages the checklists with the "before interior check (Pilot)" and the "interior check (Pilot)" tasks? Basically, what's at the end of this page in the manual:

Hey there!
Despite all the updates of the last months, despite a slow repair and removing most of the mods I had, DCS keeps crashing on me, both in VR and flat screen.
I'm attaching here the log of the last crash, I do hope someone will tell me what's wrong and what I can do to change this rather frustrating situation: don't know if it can help, I was playing one of the F-4E missions, Reflected's "Covey 41", I'm using it as benchmark for DCS performance on my PC.
Thanks in advance for any help you guys can give me, I really appreciate it.
Gianky.

- Regarding the MB339... it's a tough call. While I think it's a cool trainer and most certainly worthy of a proper guide, the demand for it is simply dwarfed by the amount of requests I have for other modules. And all that does not even take into account what I really want to work on.
Well, there's one more player here who'd love to see a Macchino guide. In any case, I'll gladly wait until after the F-4 guide.

Hi All,
This is just my opinion and I've searched here but haven't seen any comments on the pilots mirrors. For me they are useless unless you're looking for selfies and like looking down the intakes. The center mirror is focused on the pilot and provides no SA what-so-ever. The side mirrors don't provide any field coverage beyond the intakes. I feel that there is no immersion using these mirrors and they need to be a lot more useful than for just looking at yourself.
Cheers,
John
Allow me to address this concern of yours quoting the same one I had for the F-14 and the answer I got from a real life Tomcat pilot:
