Can i be doing more to get my 120 kill ratio up? I never launch a 120 outside of Rtr. Unless i put out a "feeler" with HOJ. I have never gotten a hit with HOJ, even when the target is within Rmax (turns off jammer for a second and i can see). My kill ratio is about 20% with 120's inside Rtr. I center the steering dot, have launch indications, the range arrow (closure rate indicator on VSD right side) is well within the Rtr slider, and i let her fly. This area is known as the No Escape zone right? If there is anything else i can do to increase my kills above 20% short of getting within AIM-9 range with a 120.. i'd appreciate any tips.... thanks in advance...

Welcome... it my pleasure really.... :icon_supe You know, now that i think of it, i really dont get any "stutters" in the game (at least not like i do with IL2) except when flying through smoke at low level after blowing something up. I guess there sint much you can do about this according to others. So at the risk of screwing up my registry, i probably should just leave it till i get the dual channel hooked up. Do you guys think i would be better off taking 1GB out and running 2GB in dual channel instead of 3GB in single? Unfortunately, this Gigabyte MB doesnt offer any provision for running one in single with two in dual. I have to wait till i get my 4th stick.

GG, i see you are part of the beta test team for 1.2 (i assume this is Black Shark?). Are there plans to model the missle so it comes a bit closer to the real thing?

Well, im thoroughly convinced the 120's suck...lol I just got done playing a couple of rounds on 169. One time i had the enemy locked with a friendly on the other side of him. I launch, and sure enough it misses the enemy and kills the friendly. I've launched 2,3,4 120's well inside Rtr on the VSD (isnt inside Rtr called the No Escape Zone?), steering dot centered... 20% kill ratio if im lucky. The only thing 120's seem to be good for is to get the target on the defensive so you can launch an Aim7. Another thing happened today that i never seen before. I have the target locked (with 120's or 7's, doesnt matter), the target comes within Rtr, the ASE circle opens wide, i steer the dot to center, my heart starts pumpin, my thumb covering the launch button, ready for the red lights and star for launch.. but nothing... no star... no red lights... nothin... so here i am dodging every heater and slammer thrown at me and we merge, pressing my launch button like crazy (i even tried hitting enter on the keyboard..thinking it might be my stick.. still nothing)... nothing comes off the rails.. .no launch indication, no star. no lights.... what gives? It only happened twice out of the 10 or so kills i got today.... (1 of them being the friendly where my 120 flew over the locked enemy to get the friendly...lol.. .again my apologies to whoever that was) As far as the first radar bugs i noticed. I really couldnt tell today cause i stayed low and nothing dropped off radar unless i went behind a mountain. I guess im getting better at the game though. I managed to dodge 11 missles coming from two seperate MiG29S' in formation before the 12th got me...lol Im also hearing that the Mig29S is for noobs or pilots that want the easy kill? Is this true? I hear its kinda like using the shot gun or sniper rifle in CoD2. Perhaps i should be flying that thing...lol Why isnt the MiG29S available for single player mode? I seen the A model.. .whats the difference? edited for typos... and a Great big thank you to the 169th for the use of their server... S!

Wow, thanks for all the great tips guys. Im not really that experieced with editing the registry, but i guess you have to start sometime... i'll check it out.... veeeery carefully... Thanks for those screenshots Thomas. Those sure look sweet. I probably can do that on my rig, but im sure it will turn into a slide show. I dont have any experience with the GUI configurator, but i'll take a look see. Thanks! love your site by the way...

My System, WinXP Home SP2 Gigabyte 81PE-1000G rev 4 865PE Intel chipset (been very good to me) P4 3.0 HT Prescott stock (29C idle/45C under load, Zalman Cu cooler, Artic Silver) 3GB Ram single channel (waiting for 1 more gig to have double dual channel) 100 GB Maxtor SATA partitioned C/D with XP on C and LO-FC on D. 120 GB Seagate ATA IDE for storage mainly BFG 6800GS 256 AGP stock(53C idle/62C under load) 550w PSU 3 case fans TIR4 Pro CH Fighterstick, Pro Throttle, Pro Peds Ive read the posts regarding that program (procaff?) for dual core processors, but i havent seen any problems with LOFC on my system. Or maybe i just dont notice them? I get about 20-40 fps on the ground and 50-70 airborne. Med-High settings, heat blur off. However, the F-15C seems like it eats more fps than the A-10. FPS drops significantly flying through smoke from something i just destroyed on the ground with the A-10. I downloaded and installed manually some of the FPS tweaks from lockonfiles. ALT/TAB to desktop does mess up the graphics if i do it too much. When i click off full screen mode, it doesnt appear to do anything. Im running LOFC in 1360x768 60hz with Vsync off and Trip Buff on. 4xAA, 0 AF. My LCD native is 1366x768, but my BFG card wont customize that setting so i also run XP in 1360x768. Anyone have any tips, tweaks, suggestions, i can further apply to optimize my setup? After a few hours of playing LOFC, the FPS does seem to drop quite a bit, especially on the ramp at respawn. If i reboot, im good to go. Thanks in advance.... edited for typos.

Dont forget, Fighter jocks also spend many hours in the sim where missles do hit. A full motion sim with full wrap-around views... no TIR. And i'd imagine the missles on DoD sims are modelled more precisely... Edit: Also keep in mind, pilots today get type rated in the aircraft before having ever stepped in the actual airplane. Thats how good sims are today. But these are multi-million dollar simulators, not a 30 dollar game. Basically, my "sim" cost me far less with the HOTAS, custom built machine, TIR and LCD. I suppose if you want the most realistic sim, its going to require more money. For now, enjoy the game.... :) BTW, Does ED (or any other game dev) have any plans to make flyable bombers with Nukes? Imagine that for a game... oh my...

I'd use it. Sounds like fun. One question though. What happens if the opposition shoots down AWACS? I'd imagine it would get pretty boring for the AWACS fellas... or would they just grab a fighter and join the game.... -
Good point. Now that i think of it, i do remember reading something about doppler dropping returns when the target is below a certain speed. I'll have to keep an eye on that as well the next time. But IIRC, most of these targets were head to head. never turning or jinking with closure rates in excess of 1100 KIAS. All of a sudden... poof... gone. Thanks for your insight IronHand. And thanks for your tutorials as well. I got some good use out of them....:icon_supe edit: As for this ongoing AMRAAM debate that seems to pop up in many threads (my fault for bringing it up in this one), i agree with both Breadfan and GG and Pilotasso. I can see Breadfan's point of view in saying that virtual pilots have a chance to figure out how to defeat any missle, even the most uber missle. At the same time, pilots dont have to do much to evade the AMRAAM at its present state in this game. With that said, anyone have some good tactics for defeating the R-27ET? Everytime i get a missle warning without a TEWS indication, i drop my heat signature, start beaming with assorted maneuvers, drop chaff and flare.. etc. But that little sucker will still track me down 3 out of 5. Also, I used to turn on my ECM when an R-77 fires (while maneuvering), but im quickly thinking that may not be the best thing to do in this game...lol
-
Thanks for the replys guys. Im losing lock and getting the disappearing act with head on engagements mostly. I'll pay more attention next time to beaming. But i believe beaming is more of an evasive maneuver to run down the energy of the missle chasing you. Beaming will and should make it difficult for doppler radars to detect speed and motion, but it shouldnt fail to detect a primary reflection. Metal is metal. I'll definitely keep a closer eye on it and see if its more of a beaming issue than a possible bug. From what i have been reading, ground clutter can be a problem for Nap of the earth detection if the target is flying over a congested city, but my targets were well above terrain mostly. Climbing will definitely put you at an advantage for longer missle range. At least in theory.... ;)

Yeah, its been a long night for me and i havent seen an L/D max in years...lol Actually, my first reference was correct, although interpretation of the chart didnt "click" in my mind. The correct way of stating it for that chart is that as airspeed decreases more power is required, hence the back side of the power curve. Like i said, i had a long night... and mis-interpreted that chart. My bad. Although, labels would have helped. ;) I edited my post...

Thanks for the chart.... Edit: Anyone have access to the real F-15C L/D Max?

One thing that bothers me about the F-15 is acceleration in straight and Level at high alt. If i accelerate to say 500 KIAS on the deck, and pull into a 7G vertical climb with full AB, i'll level off at say FL250 (and it gets there quick which i like) at about 200 KIAS, i'll have to pitch down quite a bit to pick up speed with the burners lit and lose some altitude. If i level at FL250 and reduce to mil power, shes gonna stall if i dont get the nose down quick from level to pick up speed. I would think you should be able to accellerate (especially in AB) from 200 KIAS in level flight at 250 without sacrificing altitude. I seen an F-15 (not sure which model) accelerate away from us after mock intercept at FL250, 260 KIAS (Mach .64 roughly?), somewhere over Atlantic City NJ and this thing took off. It was gone within seconds (and no, it wasnt an ACY ANG F-16). I mean its not like we're talking about FL350 or 450 here.... edit: Basically it seems to behave at FL250 as if it were near its service ceiling. I find myself checking to see if i left anything "hanging out in the breeze" frequently in this game.... Either way, its still a blast to play.

Hi snomf, You and I seem to be in the same exact boat. Thanks for starting this thread. Its filling in alot of cracks in my training. I been flying LO-FC for a little over a week and been flying on HL regularly. Its good to see you're enjoying it and coming along, but i think you're ready for The Big Show. Come join us on HL! You definitely have more experience than some others that are still trying to figure out the difference between a dot and rectangle...lol (i shouldnt laugh, i was one of them). The 169th server seems popular while a few others add to variety. It will be nice to have a good F-15C driver on my wing. I'll be your wingman anytime... You'll find me as _54th_capttrob. The 54th is mostly an IL2 squad, but im going to try and pull some over to LO-FC.. :-) I forgot to ask, and maybe i missed it, but do you have FC 1.12a installed? That is mostly what we fly on HL... edit: And yes... TIR4 is a must in this game, especially online. Although, I never use the TIR disable feature. I designed my own profile with some dead space in the middle that works well if i hit the sensitivity TIR key, but i rarely use it for a steady shot. When i move mud with the GAU-8, i just lean forward and all is well. Very impressive tool. There are times i wish i had 6DOF on the F-15 or Hog when a target gets hidden behind the canopy frame, but a kick of the rudder is a decent substitute.... :-)

Hi everyone, It seems the F-15 radar drops targets as they get closer even when locked. I asked someone else online who has more experience than me regarding if the target is able to go into a sort of "stealth mode", and he felt it was a bug. If im flying in RWS or TWS BVR, as the target gets closer, i adjust range to get better SA. I "trim" my radar so the target altitude and bearing are centered on elevation and azimuth (directly ahead and centered in between radar elevation limits). So i know he is definitely being scanned. As i get to about 20 miles, the target dissapears. Adjusting elevation for radar scan as needed to constantly have a good few thousand feet above and below the targets' altitude, but he goes "POOF". Sometimes this happens if the target gets shot down by someone else, but this isnt the case with what im experiencing. The target will dissapear, and before i know it, reappears at like 3 miles firing an IR missle. Is there some sort of "stealth mode" in this game? I know targets are harder to detect if they dont have their radar on, but not within 20 miles...? Sometimes if i hit bore mode and fly the circle to him visually, it also fails to detect within 10 miles, although rare. Any input appreciated... edit: Also, it takes 3 Aim-120's to get a hit at 15-20 miles. I'll deliberately climb to FL250 or above and wait for the target to come well within the slider on the VSD before firing (steering dot centered). Still takes 3 missles. 30% kill rate doesnt seem very promising for such a widely touted missle. One guy actually got angry with me cause i fired 3 missles at him and shot him down. Saying i "shot my wad" and that pilots should fire 2 and then come in with guns. Is this an unwritten rule somewhere? If my sticks miss you, you can be sure there are more coming until my rails are empty or you are a fireball.. whichever comes first....lol. I'll switch to guns when im too close for missles. :-)

You're right IK. I can find every button or switch on my CH system in the dark and i just programmed it last week! lol Now throw a few R-77 at me, and sometimes im putting the gear down when i want to drop flare and chaff...lol In my civilian flying, most pilots can find every switch, lever, button, in the dark, before they even get in the airplane.

lol.... now i've heard it all. Are you telling me a 32 passenger regional jet can outperform an F-15C due to NACA airfoil design alone? After Sept 11, we were intercepted many times by all types of our finest DoD inventory (mock engagements for practice, notfied by ATC prior to the intercept, pretty cool if you ask me, but made some Capts nervous). I can tell you from personal experience, the F-15C has much more performance than a 32 seat regional jet.....lol too funny. I think i remember reading somewhere that you can stand an F-15 on its tail off the deck and climb to FL310 without breaking a sweat. Try to do that in LOMAC at any weight. The wings on an F-15 arent made for lift, they are made for stabilization. Like a rocket. Hence the virtually 1:1 power to weight ratio.
-
I agree with your first sentence. I think he may have been flying by the keyboard... perhaps? I have a full CH system, TrackIR 4 with a homebuilt pit (including my pc), and even though it helps with immersion, im afraid to say its still a game and not a sim. Remember, many professional pilots fly sims every 6 months (military pilots flying sims more often), and many pilots fly desktop sims to stay sharp. Im one of them. The lack of functionality (with some respect in LOMAC), and the inaccurate performace of fighters would classify this software as a game to me instead of a sim. However, i still prefer to jump in LOMAC than F4AF for the basic fact of graphics and multiple flyable aircraft. LOMAC blows away F4AF IMO. I prefer LOMAC to FEAR, BF2, my Xbox360, etc... but i will definitely be getting Blazing Angels and the next Ace Combat. Just for perspective...... :icon_jook Edit: As far as not being able to compare because real pilots cant "feel the aircraft" in a sim. "Feel the aircraft" will get you into more trouble than not. Essentially, pilots ignore what they feel when they fly, rather cross check instruments to make sure the plane is behaving the way its supposed to.

Not that i need to prove anything... but... Dornier 328Jet. Real numbers are 34,524 MTOW and 6050lbs of thrust per side on Pratt and Whitney 306B Turbofans (i believe it was 306B.. i may be off on that one, its been a while, and my numbers were rounded in my first post for simplicity). Civilian jet used by Delta Connection holding 32 passengers utilizing Honeywell Primus 2000. Still currently flown by Skyway Airlines.... edit: The 328Jet on one engine outclimbs the prop version on two.... it also outclimbs the LOMAC F-15C...lol http://www.airliners.net/open.file?id=0288797&WxsIERv=Snvepuvyq%20Qbeavre%20328WRG-300&Wm=0&WdsYXMg=Qrygn%20Pbaarpgvba%20%28Ngynagvp%20Pbnfg%20Nveyvarf%29&QtODMg=Cuvynqrycuvn%20-%20Vagreangvbany%20%28CUY%20%2F%20XCUY%29&ERDLTkt=HFN%20-%20Craaflyinavn&ktODMp=Frcgrzore%2021%2C%202002&BP=0&WNEb25u=Wbfrcu%20W.%20Jntare&xsIERvdWdsY=A420SW&MgTUQtODMgKE=Qrygn%20Pbaarpgvba%20%28NPN%29%20S-Qb%20328WRG-300%20ba%20fubeg%20svany%20sbe%2027E.%20Cubgb%20gnxra%20jvgu%20na%20Bylzchf%20P-700%20qvtvgny%20pnzren%20sebz%20Ubt%20Vfynaq%20Ebnq.&YXMgTUQtODMgKERD=402&NEb25uZWxs=2002-10-26%2000%3A00%3A00&ODJ9dvCE=&O89Dcjdg=&static=yes&width=1024&height=780&sok=JURER%20%20%28ZNGPU%20%28nvepensg%2Cnveyvar%2Ccynpr%2Ccubgb_qngr%2Cpbhagel%2Cerznex%2Ccubgbtencure%2Crznvy%2Clrne%2Cert%2Cnvepensg_trarevp%2Cpa%2Cpbqr%29%20NTNVAFG%20%28%27%2B%22NPN%22%20%2B%22328wrg%22%27%20VA%20OBBYRNA%20ZBQR%29%29%20%20beqre%20ol%20cubgb_vq%20QRFP&photo_nr=6&prev_id=0373159&next_id=0073085 Never fails to amaze me how some simmers cannot grasp the fact real pilots may fly combat sims on occasion as a hobby.... lol... But hey, get your ratings and you too can compare the difference ... I have about 2000 hours in it, But im sure you'll think i just googled it...lol

I'll never forget the student i had when i was a full time CFI telling me how the 182 he flew should fly more like the one in FS98...lol

I fly professionally, and although i havent flown an A-10 or F-15, i tend to agree with "Beef" Manning. Yet, i also agree with some of you simmers. If the A-10 in Lock On was used in an A-10 Level D sim, he would find it more realistic. But the same could be said for PS2 Ace Combat. Any software used with correct functionality in a Level D will be more realistic than how we use the game presently. That is why most simmers dump thousands on building their home simulators. Some things that remind me Lock On is a game, and far from being a sim. NAV functionality definitely needs work. Cant even turn the OBS on the HSI. Fire protection is non-existent. You need to eject with an engine fire. No bottles. F-15C WAY underpowered. Most jets i have flown will accelerate with 100% thrust at gross weight (MTOW non-AB) on climb-out. The F-15C is lucky to get a few degrees pitch up at MTOW (max take off weight) and maintain airspeed above stall (definitely doesnt accelerate). At lower weights, it performs more like a civilian jet (will accelerate in climb). To give you an example, one jet i flew had 34,500 as MTOW and 6000lbs of thrust per side. We could roll that thing back to 15-20 deg pitch up and accelerate. Basically a 1:3 power to weight ratio. At 30,000 lbs, we could roll that thing back to "the cheverons" and climb direct to 10,000 feet off the deck at V2 without breaking a sweat. The F-15C has 23,450lbs per side with MTOW 68,000lbs. Thats almost a 1:1 power to weight ratio. It cant get out of its own way with 20 deg pitch up. Rolling in the AB helps a bit... but sure seems underpowered. I can only imagine what a V1 cut would be like at MTOW... better have enough runway........ lol Still an awesome game, and im addicted....:icon_supe But definitely not a simulator.... edited for typos
