I went for the KA-50 in the end - thought it would suit my style more than the Huey :)
-
Figured "what the hell" last night and bought it. If nothing else it'll help support ED :) Didn't have long to play but just moving some tanks around and engaging some T-72s was fun....

So the Summer Sale is on and I'm considering buying some extra DCS modules while the prices are good :) Currently all I have is A-10C, and I'm thinking about getting one of the helis (probably DS2 unless someone can convince me the Huey is better) and maybe CA. I used to play a lot of M1A1 Tank Platoon when I was a lot younger (showing my age!) and wondered if CA is similar to that? Do you have missions to complete with a set number of assets you can control around the target area like M1A1 so you can take your time and plan your approach, or is it more of an open battlefield and you just jump around the different vehicles while they do their pre-programmed routes etc? Most importantly is it fun and satisfying in SP, or is it really and truthfully only aimed at MP? Cheers!

How-To: Set up a 4-screen, T-shaped display in DCS
AhSoul replied to GregP's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Similar question to ThePutzer..... Is AMD Eyefinity the only decent way to do the 3 together like that? My GPU is a GTX 560 OC Edition 1GB. Currently I'm running my main display and my Helios display off it. Would rather not junk it but if it's the only way.... Could I instead just get another GPU with 2 outputs, arrange all the screens in windows and then use softTH to render DCS across the desktop? Or do I need to use Nvidia Surround? -

Invalid Serial Number after Update!
AhSoul replied to 16th Widowmakr's topic in Installation Problems
I've just had exactly the same thing after the game downgraded me from 1.2.5 to 1.2.4 and I upgraded it again. Can't play A-10 now :( -
When I first started playing I had to put my steam cd key into the registry. Now there seems to be 3 licence registry keys. All have the same 'number' item in them (which looks like my cd key) but 2 have a 'key' item which are different and the other doesn't have a 'key' item at all.... No idea what's going on with it :(
-
Great and now I can't play A-10 as it doesn't recognise my serial and/or hardware code. Fantastic :(
-
I was in the Training section of A-10 running 1.2.5 of everything. Clicked to install the Su-25 training material and it downloaded a 1.5Gb update. When it restarted everything was 1.2.4. Is that supposed to happen?

I'd have thought hi-res 3D glasses would be good for this sort of thing.... Thanks to everyone for the tips so far :)
-
Isn't zooming also cheating? Or do the pilots have binoculars on their helmets?
-
I agree with you completely. However I do wonder that until I've got a better screen I might be at too much of a disadvantage?
-
Hmm good point - not thought about the fact that visual scanning at my resolution is going to be pretty painful. It's not so bad if what I'm looking for is easily found via TGP as I've got those rendered on a 1600x1024 monitor with the Thrustmaster MFDs.
-
I don't see the tabs in options due to the resolution being so low (1224x678 due to overscan) :) I really need to get some proper screens.... Shift + F10 sounds like the way forward thanks!

[How To] Export ALL Indicators like MFCD via ViewPorts
AhSoul replied to icemaker's topic in Multi-Display Bugs
Oddly though they don't render in the 3D cockpit, which from looking at the code in the OP, would only happen if I was using a viewport for them :S -
[How To] Export ALL Indicators like MFCD via ViewPorts
AhSoul replied to icemaker's topic in Multi-Display Bugs
I've had my MFDs exported for a while, but thought I'd try this with the clock and RWR screen. Oddly they seem to just render in the top left of my main screen rather than using the coordinates in my MonitorSetup lua. The MFDs do use the correct coordinates however. Also they do this regardless of whether I have an entry for these or not in my MonitorSetup lua. -
Is that in options? I'm using a 30" LED TV atm and the resolution is crap. The game seems to struggle with this in the main menus and some stuff is just offscreen etc :(
-
Well after all my good intentions I now can't find where the option to turn the labels off actually is!
-
Interesting - perhaps that's it and JTAC doesn't work on random stuff. I'm sure the mission brief says JTAC is available and gives freqs though.... I probably need to try the campaign now to see what a properly organised sortie is like.
-
Maybe that's it - I've just got to overfly the general area and use the Mk1 eyeball to find stuff. They're just so very small :)
-
Ok I understand it for missions with specific targets, as you can scan near the target waypoint. But if you create a random mission with enemy units on Max say, they are spread all over the place (like in an area bigger than the port city I'm flying over for example). You can't scan an area that large with TGP can you?
-
This is probably going to sound like a stupid question but here goes.... I'm gradually learning to fly the A-10. I've built a cockpit, I've bought the Warthog HOTAS and Thrustmaster MFDs, I've played the training missions to learn how to deliver my ordnance etc etc. I'm not saying I'm at all good at it yet BTW! But when I hit quick mission and head off to blow stuff up I've got the little indicators in red and blue to show where the units are. All along I know this is 'cheating' so I need to ditch this crutch and be able to do without. But how do I find targets? Those little red units don't appear on my TAD. JTAC(?) often tells me nothing if I call it. So how am I supposed to work out where the tanks/BMPs/trucks etc actually are so I can kill them? Surely I can't just scan everywhere with the TGP, and the enemy units are scattered far and wide from the mission steerpoint so it's not like I can just look at that area. Any advice etc welcome!
-
My advice is keep doing the training missions until it sticks. The guided weapons and Maverick ones are fun and give you a good grounding in targeting etc
-
Nice! I was thinking of doing something like that, though when I mocked it up I found the top monitor was really high and I was getting neck strain :) I'm considering building an Akers Barnes Cockpit now given how simple the plans are, but I wonder if your desk is better for FPS games....
