In my documentary on the 325th Fighter Group I thought I had some WW2 footage of the P-51, an extended version of the P-51 firing it's guns that was shown previously. Please view at exactly 2hrs 17m 5secs and you can see there is barely any smoke, and the gun flash/percussion wave is quite distinct: Cheers, MP

tttiger, thanks for the reply...you did watch the video of the 8X 0.50 Calibre firing on a strafing run in a P-47? That's two more guns than the P-51 and considerably less smoke...and it was genuine WW2 footage. The smoke on the static P-51 is not being left behind and is being allowed to gather, hence it smokes up pretty quickly. This isn't subjective, real footage of .50 cal guns firing has been posted by me in my reply. The smoke in the Sim at the moment is way too much, way too big and should appear like a thin trail behind the wing, not a balloon of smoke engulfing it! "Some folks must be spending too much time admiring themselves in the external view?" Well maybe you should start a petition for the dev's to take all the camera's out and leave just the cockpit one? There are people who do enjoy making videos of flight sim footage....and currently the smoke isn't anything like it should appear. Do we therefore say don't allow cameras that may show issues...everyone just bury your heads in the sand....it'll all go away? Look, I have shown evidence, I have shown proof....now please be constructive and add to this conversation or just ignore video evidence and keep regurgitating the same point "My guess is if the ground shooting video is an accurate depiction, if the plane were flying at several hundred miles an hour the smoke would be quickly blown away. But it should be based on reality if it is changed." Agree, I showed reality. 8x .50-cal's firing produce nowhere near this effect when the aircraft is moving. 6x .50-calibre would be 25% less smoke than in the video I showed. MP

Okay, now, thanks for your research, that's the clip of the static P-51 I was talking about. Check out that smoke...yes, there is 'some', no, it isn't a fog cloud that can't be seen through. I just posted this footage online of the DCS P-51 firing it's guns and also tracked down some .50 calibre footage from moving aircraft. Here's my footage: I wonder how many P-51 pilots were shot down as they couldn't see through the opaque gunsmoke fog that surrounded them on an attack run? While I really like DCS P-51 and the great attention to detail in it's FM, there really are some features that could do with a bit of love :( Gunsmoke really needs to be dialled back if it is compared to this real footage you posted: If you watch the real footage from 1m 10sec you can see that while the gun produces smoke, it is not opaque and certainly doesn't block the view? Take also into account that these aircraft would be travelling at at-least 150mph and the smoke would not hang around like it is seen in the real footage. Check out this footage of a P-47 which has 8x .50 Calibre guns, all firing on a strafing run. Look how the smoke extends as a short thin trail behind the wing. Now remove a gun from each wing....does DCS P-51 really match that effect? Example of gun smoke from P-47 at 25m 20 secs and again just before 25m 30 secs And finally would the smoke really do what it shows in my video? It looks really wrong as it moves in a clockwise circle from the guns? Hopefully it will be tweaked/corrected or fixed in a future update. Cheers, MP

The thread title really says it all. Everytime I fire the guns I get a massive cloud of opaque fog covering the wings! Having watched guns firing on many vintage images and also the recent footage of the P-51 live firing from a static point....there is hardly any smoke like it appears in this sim The smoke could easily be dialled back 80% and still look effective. Is there any way to do this? Cheers, MP

Excellent work as always Tom. Thanks very much for sharing, much appreciated, cheers, MP -
In Wings of Prey they had a P-40 with Cannons that protruded from the front of the wing...they looked awful. One skinner found a way to delete the cannon from the visible image (although the muzzle still flashed) by using an Alpha Channel. I just wonder if something like that is possible with the aerials? http://forum.gaijinent.com/index.php?/topic/2647-new-skins-for-download/page-22 Cheers, MP

Which I know sounds a little odd as it look fantastic...but....The aerial underneath by the wheel covers, the twin aerial on the back and the little squiggly (vhf?) aerial embedded in the tail? I know in some paintschemes for other sims, it's possible to add a 'blank' alpha layer that disables textures and effectively renders parts of the mesh invisible and I wonder if this is at-all possible? My main issue is I really like the P-51 from WW2 and these additional aerials just become such an eyesore :( Is there any way to MOD or render invisible the aerial underneath, also one on the top and finally the 'squiggly' one embedded in the tail? Just asking because apart from that...I love this P-51 ;) Cheers, MP

Just a quick video I put together. Nothing special, just a two man flight. Cheers, MP

Questions regarding the stability and control of the Mustang
Mysticpuma replied to Pajeezy's topic in DCS: P-51D Mustang
I'm interested to know whether the simple (but nice) feature of the landing flaps also dropping down (as the Wheel covers do), once the Hydraulic T-Handle is pulled, is an easy fix for your team to make? Cheers, MP -
From another thread Swoop73 posted the following: I only have a very few problems I couldn't fix with the control setup. One is the speed the handbook says to raise the tail at... I think it's a typo in converting from metric, maybe. Why would it say raise the tail at 100 mph when the Mustang comes off the ground at around 80? Then there's the bad swerving that goes out of control when you're up on the mains for take off or trying to wheel land it. The inner gear doors come down on the ramp after shut down when you pull the T handle, which is correct, but the flaps stay up. They should drop down too as hydraulic pressure is removed from the system. Easy fix, I would think. I'm well aware of the differences between a real plane and flying at one's desktop with the short sticks we use. That said, here is my wish list to put this amazing P-51 sim over the top and make it unbeatable. Tweek the steering to be more controllable on take off and landing for those of us who aren't running 50 fps. Most Mustangs now days are wheel landed to keep better aileron control... These planes are close to 2 million dollars now. Yes, everybody landed 3-point in the War but they didn't have to pay for the occasional ground loop. Every crash including ground loops seems to end in an explosion and fire... Come on, guys... :-) Accelerated stalls are close but the real P-51 has more pronounced buffet. Also, for all of you saying the Mustang had vicious stall behavior- Not really. It would snap roll in the direction the ball was off but at least in normal stalls, if the ball was centered it would break straight ahead. This sim does model recovery beautifully... just relax the back pressure and you're flying again. Just a bunch of notes after flying the DCS Mustang for the past 3 weeks. Again, don't jump on me.. I love it and am going to work with darn little sleep some days. By the way, I'm not saying all this as theory. I have 7.5 hours in a P-51 at Stallion 51 in Florida and the first hour was with Ed Shippley.. Ever hear of him? :-) He'd be the first to tell you you can get the tail up at 60 on take off and track the centerline with razor precision. I have done split S's from altitude, holding Crazy Horse in the stall buffet all the way through. That's an exercise they teach. Take off's and landings? Probably close to 20. I'll never be able to go back... Burned through my savings... but absolutely love this sim because it comes so close to the real thing. Sure wish it didn't swerve so much on the runway though. :-) Thought I'd post it here as this I presume is the best place for these issues to be looked at? Cheers, MP

Questions regarding the stability and control of the Mustang
Mysticpuma replied to Pajeezy's topic in DCS: P-51D Mustang
Hi Swoop. Having heard of Ed Shipley and that you have flown a real P-51, I would think puts you in a point of authority amongst most to know some real vs Sim issues. Thanks for taking the time to visit and post your thoughts. I also noticed the hydraulic behaviour after pulling the T-Handle, and it's good to know I am not the only one to feel the Mustang is a little harsh on Rudder for take-off. Does anyone ever act on bug reports? Cheers, MP -
Hi there all of you that are interested or can help. Basically I am still getting the hang of this and want to fly online with a friend of mine in a non combat scenario. All that I require is that I can start a Multiplayer server, load a mission where we can both spawn at an airbase (would love one near the mountains) and then we can just take-off, fly around an land. A couple of things I am not sure how to do at the moment. When I joined a Server last-night, there was no way to save a track of the mission and also no way to change the skins. So is anyone able to: Create a mission as described above, simple non-combat, just spawn near mountains, take-off, fly around and land. Explain how I can record a track of the mission Explain how if I host the Mission/Server, I/we can change the skins on the aircraft? Tonight I had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed it....except our aircraft had German markings and I couldn't save a track of the event :( Any help would be greatly appreciated, I really am still learning and would like to have this mission to get me much more confident in the air. BTW. I did try and host a server tonight as a test, but when it asked me to load a mission, I had non available? Where should the above mission (if someone can help me) be saved to? Cheers, MP
