Thanks for sharing.

Another thought: a friend of mine noticed, that in single player the wing is much more stable, while in mp they tend to snap off even at very low g forces. I'm currently not at home for testing, but that could explain the different experiences (4g vs 6g).

[FIXED] flaregun toggle function
thawall replied to 9.JG27 DavidRed's topic in DCS: Bf 109 K-4 Kurfürst
[FEATURE REQUEST] flaregun toggle function Despite maybe being a little unrealistic, I'm also for the option to make it invisible via a toggle. It might not be a problem in reality, but in game it just feels like an obstacle to me (in an already cramped, but beautiful, cockpit). Also, I don't see how it is any different from toggling the pilot model on or off... -
I second what SkateZilla said. DX11/12 (whatever...) will improve the rendering efficiency by moving operations from the CPU to the GPU and therefore freeing up resources on the main processor. But what it absolutely will not do, is turn the rest of your code (game logic, AI, etc) magically into multi-threaded code. This is a problem you have to solve elsewhere in the application architecture.

I'm not a developer for DCS, but a software developer non the less and from my experience there are always solution and improvements you can make to an existing platform. EDGE might be the most visible and prominent component planned to change in near future, but that doesn't mean that other components are not constantly extended, refactored and improved, without us consumers noticing. Also, if CPU performance is such a problem, then I'm sure ED has something up their sleves. So I think, the DCS Engine + EDGE will be viable for years to come.

Has anybody ever tried DCS + DCS_SRV on Multi-Core PC ? You could try the following two things: 1. install the open beta and the "normal" release version. This works for sure, as i have both installations on my machine. Then use the dcs_updater.exe to update either the release installation to the beta or the other way around. 2. if you then still have the problem that both installations share the same folder in "saved games", you could just execute your server instance in another user context. E.g. Create a Windows user "DCS Server" and in the shortcut to the dcs.exe of your server installation, set it as the executing user. (At least, I would assume you can do that. Currently I can't check, as I'm on my way to the office. Another option would be to use a windows service wrapper, and assign the dedicated user to the windows service.) Report back, if it worked! Edit: sry, I misread your post... I thought it said "doesn't allow two installations". Using a second user context might also help with the instances though. Or you could always use a virtual machine ;-)

I was referring to this statement from Pman, but of course that must not necessarily also apply to LN...

Didn't VEAO have problems with getting permission from Grumman Northrop to build the F-14?

Maybe they are building the Iranian version xD

Interview with Leatherneck Studios No, not all planes got a dedicated pod (because it was rather expensive costing about 3 Mio USD). They had 4 or so on each carrier, which they swapped as needed. Of course, for LGB deployment a line of sight was necessary for the laser to work and also for visual target aquisition via the integrated FLIR sight of the LTS. No joy above clouds obviously ;-) The image quality of the LTS FLIR was very good and due to the large screen and separation of tasks in the Tomcat the RIO could identify targets very precisely. It also helped, that the Tomcat crews could stay on station pretty long and take their time to communicate with the ground troops. The D variant with the latest version of the pod was finally able to drop JDAMS. Edit: I have to correct myself, on the last part: other Variants (just read about the B variant) were also able to drop JDAMs during OIF. So it seems that the capability is really mainly linked to the LTS upgrades.
-
Interview with Leatherneck Studios Actually with the addition of the LTS, all Tomcat version became very precise ground attack platforms. They were so successfull at lasing LGBs that they started to lase bombs for Navy & Marine Hornet crews on a regular basis. If you're interested in the topic, have a look at F-14 Tomcat Units of OEF and US Navy F-14 Tomcat Units of Operation Iraqi Freedom Edit: Urls

LGB support was added through the addition of the LTS pod, an upgraded version of the LANTIRN system (http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/LANTIRN). All versions of the Tomcat could be fitted with it. AFAIK it only required a software update + the pod itself. The LTS system was improved over time to work from higher altitudes (20k feet limit was increased to 40k due to requirements in Afghanistan) and further improved to support JDAMS on the D version (only afaik) for operations in Iraq.

A sad way to end a great thread and a fun idea! Just wanted to say, thanks Cobra and Rudel, I found the riddles and hints awesome and I'd like you to continue, despite the minor negative feedback![emoji41]

Cool down a bit. I for my part enjoy hints much more than total silence from the devs. If you can't handle the uncertainty, just skip this thread...

Interview with Leatherneck Studios We need a solution or we're ultimately going to miss out on a lot of interesting planes and choppers. I'm also curious about Belsimteks approach for the Cobra.

It may be difficult to find a effective and working compromize, but I'm sure there are solutions. E.g. as already has been mentioned, the RIOs MFD might be shown as an overlay (similarly to what you would do if you need to put the MFDs of the A-10 onto a second screen). When the overlay is active you can effectively control the radar screen and targeting of the RIO. This would give you much more control over the engagement than what would be possible with an AI and a cumbersome command interface. No AI will be perfect, so I rather want the possibility to control all aspects of flying the plane and targetting weapons myself. Also, don't forget, this is still a simulation software (I hate the word game) and not reality. This being said, the devs can always improve on the control efficiency for us virtual pilots without sacrificing realism. You can consider having the Radar Screen as an overlay and controlling RIO functions from the front seat a cheat, but the way I see it I get the Pilot and RIO experience at the same time! Double the fun for me actually ;-) Also, my understanding is, that the RIO problem stays the same for the F-4.

Interview with Leatherneck Studios As for the RIO discussions for single player, I don't think that there has to be such a complex AI... With a good input setup and switchable pits it should work pretty well. I would imagine that when I switch from the front to the back a special modifier key is toggled on so that my HOTAS button- and axis mapping matches the pit. So it would basically switch to RIO mode. In Single-Player I would still be able to fly the plane from the RIO seat, because it makes no sense communicating my intentions to some sort of pilot AI. Additionally one could activate some simple Autopilot modes, which must not even be realistic as we would assume, the pilot in the front seat is handling the plane. E.g. a recovery mode as in the MiG and a simple follow waypoint option should provide a good start. This setup also has an addional benefit: I could use the modifier key for the RIO pit also from the front seat if I just want to activate switches. As we would have no visual feedback, the RIO in this case could just respond with: on/off So for me its all about the handling and how fluid I can switch seats and activate functions in the pit. If you want to have it more realisitc you would simply have to fly with a buddy ;-) (Which would also be awesome! I know ppl, who are not all to much into DCS but who would take the back seat in an instant for some MiG hunting) ;-)

The F-14 would be insanely great! I hope for a variant with LTS pod, so that it can also be used for ground attack and lasing LMavs and GBUs for the Hornets ;-) So my preferences are: F-14 > F-104 > F-4 > F-5
-
It would also fit the MiG-21, as it was its main adversary!
-
You're right. The German "Marineflieger" used them definitely. I read a book about them this summer...
-
Perhaps its the F-104 xD
-
Could someone please clarify on how to actually do this?

I'd be very interested in this too! But the only hint in the manual that I found is in the table of EKRAN messages (page 6-30): Msg number: 34, Msg text: TURN ON NAV BACKUP Sadly the procedure on how to do it, is not described. Also, this would be interesting to know: Msg number: 102, Msg text: WPN CTRL MEMORY FAILURE, description: "Turn on combat tasks backup" Any ideas?
