When you load the demo from the config utility the built in menu (looks like a blackboard) has the option to turn on camera bounds. This was what I meant. It sets a wireframe guide up showing where the tracking cam is looking. When I had a problem with my tracking camera (same as you, the lead came out) the bounding box wouldn't show up.

How strange! Erm, I'm no expert so it might be worth trawling through Google for similar problems? That said, how does the demo scene show up in the configuration utility? If you switch the bounding box on you should be able to see it inside the demo. At least then you'd know if the tracking camera was working correctly, as well as be able to see the light come on in the tracker. Sorry, I don't know enough to help you more... :(

F5 resets your view, so if you're too far back normally, lean back a little, reset view then move forward to your normal position. Regarding combat effectiveness, it depends. Without tags on spotting is tough. Using the systems of the A10 is perfectly doable and ground attack is perfectly manageable. My strafing has never been so good, nor rocket runs. Bang on target now every time! You will need to install some mods to increase HUD size, adjust radio position etc. I've linked to these a few times in my posts so if you're after them go through my posting history (I've been playing for years but only rarely post on these forums so it won't take long to find). Reading gauges is dependent on how familiar you are with your chosen cockpit layout. If you know where every gauge is anyway, and what it 'should' be reading, then knowing wear the needle is pointing is quite easy. Things that are problematic include the kneeboard (can't read, too small) and if you rely on keyboard you'll struggle (use a HOTAS, it's the only sane option with the Dk2, really). GurbY - Is your head tracking camera light on when you play DCS? I found that I had to plug it in to the DK2 cable at the rear of the PC (I forget the exact names for these parts, but it's the extra lead that Oculus mark as optional in the setup instructions). I think your problem sounds like maybe the tracker isn't on?

Some have struggled, but I had no problems just switching it on and flying. If you find (like I did) that the view is rotated 90' just rotate the rift monitor in the Nvidia control panel. I have the rift set to extended mode, tick the rift option in DCS and bingo, you're away! One thing to note - you may have a small heart attack when you first try the rift and the blue light doesn't come on. Don't panic. Just try switching between direct and extended mode in the rift control panel and this will 99.99999% of the time fix the problem. Also, make sure you have the right output connection type to connect to the rift. If you don't, you'll need to buy a converter and trust me, you'll want one to hand when the rift arrives, as waiting for a new delivery sucks! Sitting in the A10 or Huey is just an incredible experience in the rift. I just sat there when I first got it checking out all the details I missed before on a standard monitor. The first time you take off too is great, and the way your stomach lurches the first time you try a roll (which will be a slow roll, as your mind convinces you to really not throw the plane around like you normally would). VorpX is well worth considering too if you like to dabble in other games - works very well for some games (like Skyrim) and well enough in others. Also, redownload Half Life 2. It was always an epic game but really it's truly amazing in the DK2 and it has virtually native support! Lastly, remember it's a dev kit, so do expect some bugs. Grab all the small demo games out there (Dread Halls etc) as their fps are super smooth and though simple, they're really good fun. If you want to be terrified grab a copy of Alien Isolation, or for a laugh watch a friend playing it. No Limits 2 is worth a purchase too... Good luck, and welcome to the future! (I'm such a fanboy, I'm ashamed of myself - but it just works!)

It depends on the game. For DCS, I can easily fly for a couple of hours before I get fatigued. Note I said fatigued, as you soon learn to avoid the sickness feeling by adjusting how you move your eyes/head when the fps is low. I haven't felt sick in the DK2 for months, even in No Limits 2. What you will find though is that your neck/upper body get tired from having to look around in a 1:1 way. Checking your 6 feels amazing, and you get a real appreciation as to how it must have exhausted new pilots looking around whilst being subjected to real G forces. Regarding down sampling - as was stated above I notice some slight improvements but mostly prefer a slightly higher fps so have gone back to standard resolution. EDGE should hopefully offer some serious improvements regarding fps and native rift support, so will see how that pans out. Buying the DK2 changed gaming for me. I can't play games without it now as they just feel empty. Mine was an investment for some future hardware projects but for sim fans it really is incredible

Regarding your comment about seeing what your friend is seeing, try using Open Broadcaster Software. Causes no real drop in fps and allows you (and everyone else in the room) to watch their rift view on your primary monitor. Guide here - http://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/2csb3a/using_obs_for_mirroring_the_rift_tips_and_issues/ Hope this helps! (PS - Don't be alarmed if this thread vanishes, it will probably simply have been merged in to the main Oculus Rift thread)

So, it's possible I'm very late to the party, but has anyone else seen Magic Leap? Augmented reality system similar to Castar but with a much greater level of versatility. Still love my DK2 though :D http://gizmodo.com/how-magic-leap-is-secretly-creating-a-new-alternate-rea-1660441103 The above article is quite good at summing the system up!

http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/84648/ I use this mod in the current build, with no problems at all. It takes a couple of minutes to set up and you don't need to use the clickable element, if you don't want to. Just edit the mods .lua prior to installing it with JSGME. Plus, I use it with the DK2 so take advantage of the ability to move the text in to the viewable area!

Given that DCS is going to be a showcase sim for the Rift and that DCS 2 will be DX11, I think we have conclusive proof here that DCS 2 will be out ready for the new DK2 runtime! Surely the logic is sound!?:music_whistling:

Something I'd love to know is if cockpit shadows will be working in EDGE? I know only time will tell, but I'm a massive believer in the immersive effects of good lighting and shadows (Alien Isolation does this oh-so-terrifyingly-well). Having to keep them turned off for now makes me a little sad.

Manual 30 deg. toss bombing with the F-86 Sabre
smirkza replied to Holbeach's topic in DCS: F-86F Sabre
Heh, great shots. I'll have to give this a try. Any tips you can think of to improve accuracy? Smirkza -
No idea. I've never tried it. It might work, or it might cause your game to become corrupted (until you revert back to the original). Give it a try, just make sure you have the original on hand in case it all goes Pete Tong. Worst case, if you don't use mods normally is that you just end up hitting the repair tool and lose a few minutes. Smirkza

Each bird has it's pros and cons. If I'm in the mood for some stealth attacks, I'll do some pop up and run style runs with the KA50. However, if I'm in the mood for just doing some good old fashioned flying, particularly on the VA server, then it's the Huey all the way. I've yet to find the Mi8 calling me, at least not like the other two. Out of all three, I'd say the Huey holds the spot closest to my heart. A decent western attack chopper might change that though, especially if it has mutlicrew... Smirkza

A superb project, great work! As usual, the effort that goes in to these home builds is inspirational. Smirkza

The LUA sits inside the mods files. If you install with JSGME then find the config folder for the mod and in that is the default ClickableRadioMenuConfig.lua file. Replace the default file with my one then activate the mod using JSGME and bingo, an easy to read radio. I'm still working on getting the clickable part of the mod to work, but it's no biggy - finding the F keys is easy to do even with the rift on, or even better simply use something like VACS to select the radio option you want. If you're not used to using JSGME then read this excellent guide for a simple set up method. Most of the best DCS mods use JSGME so using it is really worthwhile - http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=98607 Smirkza

Easiest way is to us PeterPs radio mod. http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=76225 I have attached my config.lua for it that puts the menu in a great spot with readable size text. I have also attached an example image. If you need help setting it up let me know and I'll try and help. Use JSGME for easiest installation. Smirks ClickableRadioMenuConfig.lua

New runtime works fine without any hiccups, at least for me. Can't say I've noticed any changes (for better or worse) after installing it, but then I've been too busy focusing on shooting down 109's with my HAWK :music_whistling: Smirks

After testing sadly no, I can't read it. Nor the F15 HUD. That could be though because I'm not used to flying it, so can't use some guesswork about what the text should be reading. I think in part when I first started with the A10 after getting the DK2 I was able to read the font due to being familiar with expected readings. Smirkza

I have just tried using Nvidias DSR mode with the DK2. It hits performance, but text is significantly easier to read. The games seems to look better too, although I might be imagining that. It has introduced juddering, and I'm still debating if the increased text readability is worth the uncomfortable feeling it gives me. Smirkza

I'll load it up now and have a look.

Press numpad 5 (by default) to recenter camera view, Smirkza

Ok, after installing the mod by PeterP I previously mentioned the HUD has become readable in the DK2, without being too cluttered. I've attached one pic but it's easier to see in game than here. Link to mod here - https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/374967/ Smirkza

I had problems with eye strain a lot until I spent a little time adjusting the DK2 lens distance with the config utility. Before, I could play for 10 mins max and would end each session with a very odd feeling with my vision. Now, I can play for as long as I want to and have no visual problems after taking the rift off. As said though, it's almost impossible to fly with the HUD as it currently is so you need to have a good feeling for where gauges are and normal/abnormal ranges. I guess the thing that excites me the most with it isn't the sense of immersion it gives me (which I still think is fantastic) but rather the possibilities it demonstrates of where this tech will be in the future. With high enough res screens (maybe CV2 but with luck CV1) we will be able to experience and enjoy our simulations to a degree that we could only dream of before. Sure, it won't suit everybody. There are many negatives (eye strain, weight, res, gfx demands etc) but I think the positives simply outweigh them. Smirkza

Hi, Numpad 5 is the default recenter button. As for the HUD, I am about to try a HUD mod by PeterP that increases the size of the A10 HUD font. I'll let you know how it goes, but lets be honest, it has to be better than the default. Link here - https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/374967/ Smirkza

Nimble sense, could be something
smirkza replied to MA_Goblin's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
That actually does look quite good compared to some of the other hand sensing techs out there. Good find!
