[Closed] F-86F port wing interior structure now exterior!
BoNidle posted a topic in DCS: F-86F Sabre
Updated to latest 1.5.1 today and now get this unpleasantness on the F-86F. It appears that the interior structure of the port wing is now permanently pushed through the bottom of the wing in flight. Stationary on the ground the error does not occur. However as soon as take off roll begins the interior structure shows through the top of the port wing: Once airborne the upward flex of the wing under lift load reveals the interior structure through the bottom of the skin: However the problem appears to be confined to the port wing only with the starboard wing appearing to be unaffected: -
Just uploaded this to User Files awaiting admin clearance. "Honest John" was flown initially by Col Walker Mahurin. After he was shot down in another Sabre and made a POW the aircraft was reallocated and 336thFS emblems applied. I have included both versions. Mahurins: Post Mahurin:

Walker Mahurins "Honest John" I always liked this Sabre so I had to add it to the collection. It was actually an E model. I am trying out an attempt at an operational finish rather than the high shine ones I have been doing to date. The trick is not to go "grey paint finish" accidentally. I'm hoping to post this sometime later this afternoon. Any thoughts/criticisms always welcome. (If anyone has the names of Mahurins crew chief and armourer I'd appreciate any details as I can find nothing so far. The names on the data panel are therefore ficticious).

I must confess my knowledge of Canadian Sabres is virtually zero I'm ashamed to say. But I see what you mean about the different style of panel. I also see what you mean about the pylon spacing. Regarding the dark panel issue, I took my main reference from an excellent two page colour photo in Wings Of Fame Volume 10, page 34/35 which shows a good view of the upper surfaces of a factory fresh F-5 model in flight, close up. To be honest I am not even sure what the dark panel really is. I assumed it was a painted step area for ground-crew. I agree it would be nice to have the A/E models. However their absence doesn't mean we can't skin them. I still did "Peg "O" my heart" which was an A-5, and I have my eye on several E schemes. At heart I'm a Mustang fanatic but the Sabre runs a close second. In fact i never saw a North American aircraft I didn't like.

"Mavis" is now uploaded to User Files awaiting admin clearance, so it will probably be Monday before she's available. I worked out that the stripes consist of nearly 60 parts!!! At one point I had 12 layers going just for them!! For what is essentially a simple scheme its somewhat testing to achieve the desired effect. Now I know why I avoided doing it for so long.
-
Nice. We can finally create a decent metal skin! One thing though, the dark panel that runs the length of the wings should not have the V section removed. Check out the photo to see what I mean. (And having looked at the photo again I have just seen there is a panel in the same section that I have painted that shouldn't be! D'oh!)

I will be uploading this to user files later tonight. And yes, the stripes were a MOFO!

Already rolled out and awaiting admin clearance old chap. Thanks for your help.

I have now updated and reloaded my 4thFW and 51stFW generics along with "Peg "O" my heart" and the A model generic to try and fix the shimmering/loss of decal issue. The 4thFW are now back up and the other are awaiting admin clearance. If anyone has any further issues with the skins please PM me.

Thanks indeed Zaelu, it was starting to drive me nuts!! I suspected it had to be something to do with the transition from jpeg to dds but had no clue what as i have never really worked in them before. I will re-do my last releases using DDS and re-release them. Thanks for spotting this issue Esac mirmidon. ( that said, still ensure the RCAF textures are removed from all my skins description.lua or a whole new set of issues arises)
-
I see the problem but I cannot replicate it on my PC. The only thing I have found which causes graphic errors was the use of the RCAF cockpit textures which gave it the black instrument panel. For some reason the new graphics engine does not seem to agree with their use. This has pained me as I really liked the look it gave the cockpit, but it seemed to cure the problem. So it needs to be done in all my skins that have it. Each description.lua needs to be opened in notepad and all entries with the word "Cockpit" contained in them needs to be deleted and the description.lua saved again. (You can delete the 8 texture files with RCAF in their name too but the description.lua edit is essential). These highlighted sections need to be deleted: However if you have already done that and its not helped then I'm a bit stumped. I have had no-one else contact me so it could be either a bug or a graphics setting at your end...but if it does not happen to other skins then the latter does not seem likely. Please let me know if it helps.

I have been informed that there may be an issue with my latest skins, (51stFW Generics, "Peg "O" My Heart", F-86A-5 basic, 4thFW generics) causing "shimmering" on other aircraft. If you are getting similar problems could you let me know please. The only thing I am doing differently on these is saving the skin layer as a DDS instead of a jpeg as I did in the others. But until I know its a common issue I do not want to have to go through them all and change them to try and nail any potential cause. I have looked at my own skins in game and so far cannot see anything wrong. If you can post any screenshots of any issues encountered I would be grateful. Thanks, Bo.

I have had another experiment and the only thing I notice is some aliasing along the edges of aircraft at extreme distances. But its negligible. If you look at the horizontal tails in the screenshot above you can see what I mean. The only thing I have done differently with the skins from 51stFW generic onwards is to save the skin file as a DDS instead of a jpeg. If you PM me your email I could send you a replacement jpeg file to replace the DDS and see if that makes a difference?

I'm a little puzzled mate. I assume you are using them in the new DCS World? I have just changed all the aircraft in the Mig Sweep mission for 4thFW generics and cannot see anything amiss. Could you post a screenshot here to show exactly what the problem is? That might be a help to someone more technically minded than myself.(i.e. everyone.)

The two photos upon which I relied heavily for this skin. ....and yes, I did forget to paint the front wheel red!!!
-
These liveries are intended to allow you to make up flight numbers. The 4th Fighter Wing comprised of three squadrons each distinguished by emblems painted onto the gun bay panels: 334th Fighter Squadron - Fighting Eagles 335th Fighter Squadron - Chiefs 336th Fighter Squadron - Rocketeers (I have also included a generic A model in 336thFS markings. This is the same one that I included with "Peg "O" My Heart" but this one now has the 91 serial prefix that I forgot to put on it originally) They should be up at User Files soon.

Skate Zilla's F-86F Layered PhotoShop Templates - Unofficial
BoNidle replied to SkateZilla's topic in F-86F
Seconded. Thanks Skatezilla. -
Just updated DCS World OpenBeta to find that my F-86F Sabre has been removed!!! Most distressed!! I tried reinstalling via the CMD prompt but it tells me "Acess Denied"! I downloaded again from the ED site but it will not run. Most unhappy. Update: The downloaded Beta starts to run but then tells me: "Can't install F-86F 1.2.16.43180 into newer DCS World 1.5.0.46175. Please, download 1.5.0.46175 installer" The only version I am able to download is F-86F_1.2.16.43180.9-9. Update on the update: SUCCESS!! I made an error in the CMD prompt. Found it and now have my beloved Sabre back in the hangar. However I am curious as to how it got ripped out in the first place?! Please do not do that to me again. A man of my advanced years lying on the floor kicking and screaming in a tantrum is not dignified...according to my Mrs!!

Well after the re-releasing of my old Sabres for DCS World 1.5 I have finally been able to start new ones. For my first effort I decided to be ambitious and recreate one of the most distinctive Sabres of the Korean War; "Peg "O" My Heart". This was actually an F-86A-5, hence the featureless grey nose. It was one of the last issued to the 4thFW 336thFS before they transitioned to the E. I have to say this has been one of the most difficult skins I have ever done due to the way the template cuts the art in to pieces, and required a LOT of patience, and not a little imagination, to get the pieces to match on the in game model. (Not a criticism of the template, it's brilliant!) A lot of study went into this one. What I discovered is that every other skin, decal set and illustration that I have seen of this particular Sabre had got the markings incorrectly depicted. From the Heart artwork to the lettering style of the name plus the smaller names style and colours. Thankfully I located two photographs of the original aircraft showing both sides which were invaluable. I have included copies in the skin file for "Peg". Anyway its at User Files awaiting clearance and I have included a generic 4thFW 336thFS F-86A-5 skin with it to make up a flight of A-5's. Hope you like it.

Thanks Azazel. If you remove all the lines in the description.lua with the word "cockpit" in them and then re-save it will remove the black instrument panel. It appears to be a bug in the sim, not the cockpit textures themselves, to blame. I am not using them now until the issue gets resolved and then hopefully put them back in as an option. The black panel is perfect for a Korean war era F-86 which is why I used them. My thanks to Zaelu also, for pointing out the jpeg issue. I now save as a DDS, which I should have done to begin with, and improved other saving methods too after taking in your suggestions. (Never too old to learn).

In response to requests I have just released this three pack of 51st FW squadron generic skins to build up flight numbers. They comprise of the the 16th Fighter Squadron (Blue) the 25thFS (red) and the 39thFS (Yellow). They use the in game default numbers (hence the "24" permanently on the tail). They should be available at User Files soon.
-
Sorry guys, I ddn't know the RCAF cockpit textures were causing an issue like that. I will stop using them.
-
The small photo enlarged and cleaned up a little.
-
The only photo I can locate of the actual aircraft (it is not a very good one but the name is legible), plus a photo of Clifford Jolley.
-
It was a play on words. The pilots name was Clifford Jolley.
