Yes. Even the official Air Force manual doesn't say much. At least what I gathered from it is that the nosewheel steering is automatically engaged once the gear strut is compressed (so that would happen on landing within direct input from the pilot). And before taxi, the NSW has to be "CHECKED".
-
It is my understanding that nosewheel steering is on anytime the aircraft is active on the ground. "The nosewheel steering is continuous and has two modes. Normal steering is automatic and is available anytime the aircraft is running. To obtain more sensitive steering, you must hold the nosewheel steering button on the stick. Both modes work well and give the pilot the stability of dampened steering for long straight taxiways and sensitive steering for tight turns." Is there a file where we can see the values of the hit points of various ground units, and how they're affected by the different weapons we can use?

Hi, After getting acquainted with DCS World through the F-15C module, I recently started learning the A-10C. Everything is going smoothly, from cold start to basic navigation and targeting. I'm now learning the basics of combat employment, and I have a question regarding the damage model of ground units. I understand the damage to aircraft is very well modeled under the latest versions of DCS World. But how about ground units? For example, if I shoot a tank through the rear with the Avenger cannon, will it be easier to blow it up? Or if I drop bombs and miss the tank, can I still damage its tracks and disable it? If I shoot a truck without hitting the engine or the gas tank, will it still explode? I'm simply trying to understand what kind of accuracy and thus effort is needed to destroy enemy ground units. Is it hit to destroy? Is it hit enough times to destroy? Or is it hit at the right location, enough time, to destroy? If this was asked before, please redirect me. Thank you!

Steam Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) and Steam Specific Issues
Steinsch replied to ShaZe88's topic in Steam Support
Campaign Progress Hi, I updated to the DCS 1.5 beta on Steam. I quickly realized that my campaign progress had not been copied to the new version. That's fine, as lots of things have changed and we all want to avoid compatibility issues. But. What if I now start a campaign in the 1.5 beta? Will the progress be saved and usable in the 1.5 final? -
My trk files don't work (it's particularly bad with beta 1.5), so I made a video of a landing without hydraulics: Probably not the real life procedure as GGTharos mentioned, but it works in the sim.

Yes, good old Chuck picked a worthy cause! :-) Too bad the campaign closed, and from what I've gathered their T-shirts are not available for sale anymore. Would anyone here be interested in another "Save the A-10" themed T-shirt? If yes, do you have any specific design in mind?
-
Hi, I opened a thread here regarding T-shirts: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?p=2468704#post2468704 It's not DCS merchendise per se, but you may like what you see.

Greetings all! Like many of you, I've been frustrated by the lack of really cool t-shirts depicting our favorite combat aircraft. As nothing was coming from ED, I decided to take the matter into my own hands. So I had nice artwork designed for t-shirts, sweatshirts and hoodies, and the apparel is now available for sale online. Within DCS, I'm more of an Eagle driver myself but I've always had a soft spot for the Warthog, so... That's what I focused on with a lot of excitement. :) Please have a look at www.thewarthogstore.com, and don't hesitate to let me know what you think! Your support and feedback will be very precious for future designs. And if you like what you see, I'm happy to extend a discount to all members of the DCS community. Just use this coupon to get 10% off all orders for the next two weeks. Coupon code: DCS-DISCOUNT-10 I hope you'll enjoy the designs!

I'll be happy with a simplified version of it for now. After all, isn't the radar of the DCS Eagle or Flanker a simplification as well? (With a better modeling coming with F-18C?)

Hi everyone, I've been having fun with the F-15 for a couple of months now. From what I've seen in the forum, a lot of people also enjoy the simulation, and that's great! But it just occurred to me that one important component of modern aerial warfare is missing in DCS: electronic warfare. It is my understanding that dedicated EW aircraft such as the retired EF-111 and EA-6B played a key role during deep strike missions over enemy territory and complemented wild weasels missions, at least in the pre-stealth era which seems to be what's simulated in DCS. Are these airplanes, at least in their AI incarnation, work in progress?

Is turning off external light useful in combat?
Steinsch replied to Steinsch's topic in DCS: Flaming Cliffs
Interesting, I had never thought about aircraft lights under the infrared angle! Thanks. Can anyone confirm if this is modeled in the game? -

OK, thanks! -
Hi, I'd like to know if there is some simulated advantage to turning off external lights in a dogfight with the AI. Does the AI get an aiming or detection "bonus" if I'm lit like a Christmas tree? Thanks.

Hi, I'm setting up a campaign mission where the clients are US F-15s. I put a few allied Georgian EWR on the map (on the premise that AWACS are not available at the beginning of the conflict), including near the AOR of the F-15s. I set the EWR to adjust their frequency to 124AM, just like the F-15s. However, when I test the mission, I can't seem to contact the EWR. The radio menu offers the usual messages (request picture, dogey dope, etc.) But once I select one, nothing happens. My pilot remains mute, and there is no answer from the ground stations. I tried to allow the US to own and run an EWR to see if it was because of a language limitation (dcsworld/scripts/database/db_countries.lua file), to no avail. Is it a limitation of the game or a bug?

Could you please confirm if emptying my fuel tank to be lighter would help in reducing the landing distance?
-
Thanks for the additional info. I've stumbled upon this page: http://www.f15sim.com/operation/f15_hydraulic_system.html It seems the hydraulic system of the F-15 is quite resilient thanks to redundant subsystems. Is it possible that a "Hydraulics failure" in the game could be a partial failure only, hence explaining while I still have control but brakes have ceased functioning?
-
Thanks. I'm not ready to dive into scripting for now but good to know it's possible.
-
Thanks guys. So I understand that in real life, ejection is recommended, but in the game it's still possible. I'll practice with a 19 AOA and see how it goes. Thanks again.

Mission Editor: AI able to land, refuel, and take-off again?
Steinsch replied to Steinsch's topic in Mission Editor
Hey guys, Thanks for the pointers. I don't feel confident messing around with scripting, but at least I know where I stand. Copy activation will be the way to go for now! -
Hi, I'm also interested in knowing the answer :-) And I'd also be happy to set the light conditions for my own aircraft. It seems that lights are always off by default at the start of the mission, even during night time.
-
Hi, I've been playing with the mission editor for a couple of weeks. Quite a fun and powerful tool! There is still a type of simple scenario I can't seem to be able to create. I'd like an AI aircraft to be able to land at an airfield, refuel and rearm, take-off again and follow its next way points. Is it possible? Steinsch

Hi there, I'd like to know if anyone could share their experience about landing the F-15 without hydraulics-dependent systems (air and wheel brakes mainly). The bird bleeds speed very slowly under 200 knots and it's extremely difficult to flare, as nosing up will actually increase lift and altitude will be a gained again. The difficulty can be compounded when the ACS has been damaged as well. Landing at Batumi in these conditions is a real challenge. Is there any proper available procedure for the F-15 as modeled in DCS? Thanks! Steinsch
