Weather mod v1.9 for DCS
bandit648 replied to bandit648's topic in Utility/Program Mods for DCS World
Dynamic weather that changes mid-mission is currently not possible. I do have some ideas to make random weather at mission start possible. I will see what I can do.- 381 replies

Weather mod v1.9 for DCS
bandit648 replied to bandit648's topic in Utility/Program Mods for DCS World
I will look at updating this into my me_weather.lua. Tempest's mod hasn't been updated since 2022 and DCS has added many changes to that file since then, so I wouldn't recommend using it.- 381 replies

Weather mod v1.9 for DCS
bandit648 replied to bandit648's topic in Utility/Program Mods for DCS World
Unfortunately you can't "preset" the cirrus clouds. ED would need to add the framework for that (I wish they would!). The game engine only calls 2 of the 4 cirrus texture files per mission run, so you can see up to 10 different cirrus cloud types in one mission. They change every 10 minutes. Each cirrus texture file has 5 cirrus textures baked into it for a total of 20. The game may appear stuck on the same 10 cirrus clouds until you change the date/time or restart the game. I can't see what logic it's using to select which cirrus texture files it uses so there's no way for me change that. Each time you start or restart a mission, a new texture out of the 10 available will be rendered at start. This prevents seeing the same cirrus clouds repeatedly. I'd really like them to add a simple framework to select a cirrus cloud preset similar to the current cloud presets. That way I could continue to create more cirrus clouds and it would be more efficient than what I'm doing now. I could create an external app to swap files around but that just seems clunky.- 381 replies

bandit648 replied to bandit648's topic in Utility/Program Mods for DCS World
Alright guys, v1.9 is out! Give it a try and let me know what you think. 8/26/2025 - Updated to version 1.9 - ALL NEW cirrus cloud textures - 20 unique highly detailed cirrus, cirrostratus and cirrocumulus variations - New shader code insures a different cirrus texture loaded with each mission reload for better variety. - Shader "patch mask" helps break up repeativness, adding gaps of clear sky between areas of cirrus - Moon size increased - Star size decreased back to default - New LOW RES version available for people using VR or lower end PC. Weather mod v1.9 for DCS
bandit648 replied to bandit648's topic in Utility/Program Mods for DCS World
I did some performance testing on CWG map, flying around Berlin in heavy clouds/rain. Since my mod is increasing the cirrus clouds from 1K to 4K texture resolution, it does cause increased VRAM usage. In my case it was about 1G more VRAM being used with the mod active. This hasn't ever been an issue for me with the 4090. In version 1.9 I will offer a version with lower resolution (1024x1024) cirrus textures. This will keep the VRAM usage roughly the same as default but still offer better visuals and variety. They won't look as good as the 4K versions up close but for VR users it won't matter much. FPS and frame times are basically the same in my testing of mod vs default.- 381 replies

Weather mod v1.9 for DCS
bandit648 replied to bandit648's topic in Utility/Program Mods for DCS World
I'm pretty sure I saw a thread a while ago reporting this as a bug, so it's an issue with the game engine cloud rendering. I'll see if I can tweak the settings on scattered showers 5 to get rid of it. It does only seem to occur in certain types of cloud formations.- 381 replies

That sounds possible since I'm increasing the size and resolution of the cirrus cloud textures. I'm about to release v1.9 and will do a performance comparison video on the CWG map for reference.- 381 replies

I'm interested to know more details about your performance issue. If you're running VR, heavy weather settings and Germany map then I'm not too surprised you're seeing poor performance. If there is an issue caused by my mod I want to fix it.- 381 replies

No. Unfortunately the lightning shader is invoked by the game engine code when the PRECPTNS is set to Thunderstorm in the weather setting. No way for me activate in the weather presets.- 381 replies

Looks it's probably Jupiter and Mars or Saturn there. They shouldn't be visible during day. I can try tuning the Star.fx settings a smidge to get rid of it.- 381 replies

I boosted the star light and size but I haven't noticed them that visible during the day in any of my testing. What was the date/time when you took that screenshot. What is your screen resolution?- 381 replies

bandit648 replied to bandit648's topic in Utility/Program Mods for DCS World
How did you install the update? If you're using a mod manager, and uninstalled 1.8 then it should work. If you just copied it over that won't work. There's folder/file in the mod that need to be removed. \Bazar\shaders\common\samplers11.hlsl needs to be removed.- 381 replies

Weather mod v1.9 for DCS
bandit648 replied to bandit648's topic in Utility/Program Mods for DCS World
***If you downloaded 1.8 on August 12-14th, download again for the hotfix. There was a bug causing long loading times. Also recommended to clear your shader cache Saved Games\DCS\fxo and metashaders2 folders. 8/14/2025 - *HOTFIX* Updated to version 1.8.1 - Fixed excessive shader cache generation and long load times.- 381 replies

Weather mod v1.9 for DCS
bandit648 replied to bandit648's topic in Utility/Program Mods for DCS World
I found the issue. I'll release a fix tomorrow. If you're having issues with it roll back to v1.7 for now. On my machine it takes about 60 seconds to start. Try clearing out your shader cache in Saved Games\DCS\fxo and \metashaders2. That first run after clearing your shader will take a little longer but it should be good after that. Let me know if it's still a problem.- 381 replies

Yes, you don't need to do anything. During a mission you can see up to 8 different variations of cirrus. They change every 10 minutes. There are a total of 16 unique cirrus cloud types now.- 381 replies

Unfortunately you can't set these via preset and it's not possible for me to do that without access to game engine code. The cirrus are generated randomly by a shader. I'm working on yet another visual improvement to the cirrus layer in the next update.- 381 replies

Weather mod v1.9 for DCS
bandit648 replied to bandit648's topic in Utility/Program Mods for DCS World
Hi all, Completed my 3000 mile move and got my sim rig back in business. Time for some updates! 7/1/2025 - Updated to version 17 -NEW: Modded cirrus shader to use a texture array. This increased the number of unique cirrus cloud types from 4 to 16. You will notice many new variations of cirrus while flying your missions now. All cirrus textures were created by me from hi resolution photos of real cirrus clouds. -Tweaked several cloud presets, improving the look of Low level stratus, Altostratus and Altocumulus cloud presets - Included 4 new presets for heavy broken cumulus clouds. These are the Scattered Showers presets with no rain.- 381 replies

Weather mod v1.9 for DCS
bandit648 replied to bandit648's topic in Utility/Program Mods for DCS World
Thank you, I appreciate that! I certainly wouldn't mind if ED added it the base game so I don't have to update it after every DCS update The mod itself doesn't change anything with the way weather is rendered, other than adding some higher resolution textures into the cirrus shader. In my experience, clouds by themselves don't impact performance much. It's the rain, mist and fog that do.- 381 replies
