  1. QFT x 100 You have no idea just how much you move your head around needlessly until you try TrackIR. I never had much problem with it at first, beyond the fact that every pre-set that came with it was far, far less sensative than what I wanted. I had to set things to a very steep curve to get what I was looking for. Funny how much humans tends to hate when others are successful, huh? If things like Freetrack work, I guess NaturalPoint did a pretty bad job of "locking the customers" to "milk their money". So is every company who sells a product at a premium over the do-it-yourself version a rip off? I just fail to understand logic like this. If you think you can do better than NaturalPoint, there is nothing stopping you. But its easier to just say they're a monopoly while ironically that "monopoly" continues to be succesful, right? Its not a question of "making it without them" its a fact that I don't care to look elsewhere. If you're looking at a $200 piece of hardware and you honestly think that this is so expensive that you find building your own is a legitamate alternative, flight simming is not for you. Because you probably won't want the PC you'll have to build/buy and the HOTAS+Rudder pedals needed to fully enjoy them. In fact...you may just want to read a book. I have yet to see any hobby that doesn't have its fair share of expensive toys for those who want to take it seriously. If you have some sort of moral problem with it, I sure hope you're running a Linux machine and not using your FreeTrack on Windows -- if it would even work on Linux... ;) Yeah, and they also look like that Mr. Moneybags guy from the Monopoly board game too.
  2. S!
  3. If the cockpit was rather sparse with two large screens dominating like Groove's screenshot, I would agree that it was probably the F-35. I wonder if the F-22B/C/D will be upgraded to large touch screens with no actual OSBs.
  4. Quick explanation: helicopters are death traps. Do not fly one. :D You beat me to it.
  5. I don't know if you've made any changes since I last commented, but NOW you're cookin! Looks great, lovely detail on the engine intakes.
  6. Oops...my mistake.
  7. If the real F-15 is anything like the F-16, you can jettison any of the stores you like individually by using the stores management system.
  8. For good reason! A lot of thought went into the F-16 HOTAS. If you have a Cougar or a Fighterstick and program it per the real Viper's functionality, minus the classified ECM stuff of course, its amazing how well it all comes together. :D
  9. Wasn't there a thread around here and some articles talking about it was hoped (in a sort of unadmitted, no one comes out and says it sort of way) the MKI's would use their radar so some ELINT could be done but they ended up only using some sort of simulation or training mode? I know that I'm missing something important, since I don't see how you can even operate at Red Flag without using your radar.
  10. Hello Stormin! You're referring to ED being contracted to make sims for military purposes, right?
  11. They're running it at Randolf AFB? LOL...wow, that sure is close to home. Thats about a 20 minute drive from me. So close, but yet so far away. EDIT: One thing I think is really cool...he's got the MFD view zoomed in way the hell far. "Oh noez! That isn't realistic." :P
  12. If that doesn't do it for you, let me know, I have a few x52 pro profiles I have somewhere around here. They're as-is though, I haven't used them in over a year. ;)
  13. FYI anyone reading this... If you have an Nvidia card, set your overall performace preference to "Quality". This will fix this cloud glitch.
  14. Happy Birthday!!! :)
  15. Don't be so depressing! :P I'm interested in what people choose DESPITE what choices we actually have (at the moment).
  16. BUUUUUUUMPING this because I want to see if anyone knows why this upgrade caused such a performance increase!!
  17. Hey Steve! Awesome to have you here!! :) No revelation here about gathering the intel. Like you said, if you don't do that type of thing at something like Red Flag, you're probably alone. The "jaw-dropping" part was just as you said, I couldn't believe he'd just come out and say that the way he did. Plus the part about "God help us" if we fight a war with the French. It was disbelief of how harsh it was.
  18. Removed! By the person who posted them, I think. There were hints of this in the comments. Was there anything in those videos that would even remotely get that pilot fired or get someone in legal trouble? I sure didn't think so.
  19. Fair enough. I did find some insights from watching it, like seeing a USAF pilot suggest that gunzo might not be the exception to the rule for the F-22. In addition to what I've already mentioned, it was nice to hear a USAF pilot talk about Cope India in reasonable terms. Good gravy, there's so much stupid crap brought up about that. People need to wrap their minds around what "dissimilar air combat" means. Yes, it was certainly told from his point of view and he didn't hide that. People's points of view are often more insightful than anything else! Second, I don't know much about the Su-30MKI. All I ever read is that its a Russian plane with Western avionics. Well, apparently not ALL Western. I would have assumed they would want whatever datalink NATO uses (Link-16?) before participating in Red Flag. Also didn't know about the TV nozzles. I thought the MKI had full 3D vectoring. Maybe the pilot is mistaken. As for the length and level of content, you'd be mistaken if you think that all military briefs are detailed. It depends on the audience. If its the higher-ups, its possible they're very much like a business presentation (or perhaps the other way around? Maybe business communications as a discipline jacked it from the military?). You give the most pertinent info, keep it very simple -- like an executive summary. Your audience can read all the foot notes and details on their own. 15 to 30 minutes is not unheard of. When I had to do these things in college, I had often had to keep them to 10. :P It isn't far-fetched at all to have such a complex and multifaceted argument like "we need more F-22s" to be this short and simple. I doubt his audience is superior officers, though, so we can keep it at infomericial. :) From the looks of it, it might just be a bunch of enthusiasts or something. EDIT: I found it jaw-dropping that he accuses the French of showing up for little more than ELINT. Like they came there just to ninja all the radio waves.
  20. This question comes from my observation of where sims have been and where they sit today. Flight sims used to be mainstream. However, when you look at those past sims, what do you see? Nothing even remotely as remotely as realistic as what we have now. And you can't really say it was just the old technology that limited it: F-117? Good luck with finding a hi-fi sim for something like that. No, I'd argue that because the technology was crap, and you couldn't really do anything realistic, you had to make up for it by developing sims that focused on the "cool factor" of flying a classified plane (BTW...I like how the Nighthawk in that sim can shoot AMRAAMS! ). Keep in mind that these sims, warts and all, are from the "golden age"!! Maybe I'm asking this to the wrong group? :P What I'm interested in determining is if anyone would be interested in a modern version of something like that F-117 sim. Modern graphics and sound, better avionics, advanced flight model, based on everything that is public knowledge about it and related aircraft (NO AMRAAMS!). And of course, some good guesses. It could ultimately open up the opportunity for more sims and maybe bring in more players. I'm all for hi-fi too, but I wouldn't have any problem playing a sim like that as long as it didn't try to be an arcade shooter and took itself as a serious flight sim.
  21. LOL...I have those. Those are probably the only ones I could use. Those are fine, but it still gets uncomfortable after a while.
  22. Why do you say it was an "infomercial"?
  23. There's something of an ID matrix F-15 pilots use to identify bogeys, IFF is just one of several things they may need to do. Lockon has IFF as this thing thats always on when in reality you have to actually "interrogate" the contacts by pressing a button. Did he mention IFF? I only remember the issues with datalink. Man, that would be the first thing I'd change. Not being able to plug into the link with everyone else is a big disadvantage. Can anyone guess why they were removed?
  24. Ahem...check the date on the thread gents. :music_whistling:
  25. Two polls in one week! Cool_t would be proud! Here's the question I'm interested in: if there was a rebirth of mainstream sims, would you be willing to buy sims based on educated guesses or are you "spoiled" by things like DCS and Falcon 4.0? By guesses, I don't mean arcade. For example, pick a newer aircraft you like, like the F-22 or Su-35. Now lets say a developer takes all the available info on the F-15 and Su-27, researches the public info on the F-22 and Su-35, puts them together with some educated guesses to give you F-22 and Su-35 sims. They would not be 100% accurate, but they'd be fairly accurate up to a point. What they lose in accuracy they could very easily make up in fun! :) Would you be interested in these? Or are you only interested in aircraft that can be simulated in ultra-high realistic detail? EDIT: If you want to know what level or realism I had in mind for these sims, imagine a level of detail somewhere from the Su-25T in FC to the F-18 in Janes'.
