  1. FWIW, I get crashes too from time to time. Very similar to what happens in LOMAC. No freeze, just a "DCS has encountered and error and must shutdown" type of thing. The UI stays running. 2. ^^^^^ This should be encouraging to everyone. See? Don't get discouraged! It's normal for the helicopter to kill you if you mistreat it!
  3. CH gear, all the way. I still use my Saitek pedals, but if I had to buy another set, it would be CH. If you live in the US, I would suggest Provantage: http://www.provantage.com/ch~880CHPD.htm You'll save about $50 on each part you buy compared to buying directly from CH.
  4. Many, many reasons. ;) The F-15 was quite a leap ahead of the F-4 when it was first developed. Besides things like actually having look-down, shoot-down capability, there are things the F-15 pioneered that flight simmers take for granted. An example is the way radar info is displayed. At the time it was quite a feat. Instead of showing raw radar returns, it processed the info into a digital horizontal picture on the VSD. The dynamic launch parameters of its various weapons were calculated by a computer depending on speed, altitude, etc. of the F-15 and the bandit it was tracking. This allowed the pilot to fulfill the role that was held by the RIO in the Phantom. At the time, and even today, this is seen as an advantage. The VSD allows the pilot to do at a glance what the RIO had to be trained to do with calculations in his head. Another big advance was the concept of a HOTAS, which the F-15 also pioneered. The pilot workload in the Phantom was much higher. These things, especially the way the VSD displays contacts and DLZs are things that many take for granted. I know I certainly did! As much as I dislike the F-4, I'll admit it wasn't a horrible plane for the time. But the F-15 was just so, so much better. ;)
  5. What I do not totally understand is why they need so many F-22s. For the sake of overkill? If this aircraft is such a quantum leap ahead and such a force multiplyer, why do you need more than the 183 you already have? This is like 15 times the size of some countries' entire fighter air force. I can certainly understand the longer term goal of replacing every F-15 with an F-22, but even the USAF got every single Raptor it wanted, it would still be no where near fully replacing every Eagle. Since this is the case, why load up on them now? The F-22 will only be improved over time and there isn't a whole hell of a lot of other aircraft on the horizon that can challenge it. People tend to forget how quickly wars can materialize out of nothing in a time frame that is too quick to produce enough equipment, God forbid anything ever happen. So I can understand the need for them now rather than waiting. But I think asking for more is going to be a suicide mission with what the apparent threat is today.
  6. I didn't pay anything, obviously. That article, according to that web page was originally in some sort of publication from "Agence France-Presse" (never heard of them). Did you notice that? This would lead one to believe that it was written by someone attempting some half-way serious journalism. Do you think all journalism is pay only? Ever heard of Reuters? Associated press? BBC? Even cable news networks from the US have websites that are by and large, free. Maybe the title is a poor translation. It certainly is poor, no matter the reason. It was written to grab attention, which it succeeds at, rather than a true summary of the article. Its the motive behind the need to draw attention at the expense of truth that I'm always suspicious of. My first thought is almost always "money from advertisers". Negativity sells.
  7. QFT. Its starting to click on how important trim is. Yeah, yeah, yeah, thats what everyone has said, but I still didn't get it. I don't think you can until you see for yourself. I skipped ahead a bit, well not really, it was the next training track, to learn the start procedures so I could actually fly the helicopter in any of the training tracks. It took starting the Ka-50 from a cold state to fully appreciate how to use trim. The first experience I had with the instant action mission was a bit misleading.
  8. Man, this doesn't surprise me. As I'm sure you know there are people in the US who have literally rebuilt their homes multiple times after being in essentially the same natural disaster over and over and over and over and over again due to their geographical location. They refuse to move because they like the location. I say that if you have enough money to do this, more power to you. But at some point, there needs to be a limit on amount of care is given to these people. Like say if this is your third time, you don't get any emergency medical care. :D I'm convinced if there was a gigantic bottomless pit in the middle of some rural area in the US, there would eventually be houses with back yards butt up against it and people willing to buy them. :noexpression:
  9. I'll second this. I bought one of those so I could have a USB stick. Before I was using a Logitech Wingman 3D from cira 1999. Very, very, VERY good stick (they don't make'em like they used to!), but it used an old gameport connection! The AV8R has 4 two way switches and an A/B selector. That means those switches can be quadruple-functioned. The A/B switch can also double-functions the buttons on the stick. Two throttles means FIVE axes on the stick, which is excellent, one more than you usually have. The stick is also quite comfortable, the front of the base is shaped well for your hand to rest on it while you use the throttles. The cord is also in a good position, coming out the side rather than the top. As Urze said, it is very affordable The only downside is that its light -- its made 100% of plastic. This is of no consequence however if you just keep your throttle hand on the base while you play. This stick is like a starter HOTAS. This one will keep you going until you can afford better!
  10. How about the Nintendo Wii? Seriously, this has been done. And over the long-term, its very fatiguing. I don't want to wave my hands around like an idiot just to drag an icon across the desktop or rewind the DVD I'm watching. The spatial stuff is cool, but its nothing but a gimmick. If I present to you a pie chart in 3D that has a bump-mapped leopard skin texture and casts real-time shadows on the background, is this really any more useful than the 2D pie chart I can make in Excel? Or even one I can draw with a pencil? EDIT: Now apply this interface to controlling nano machines that can work deep inside the human body or at the microscopic level? You may have something! :D
  11. How about an easier explanation: staring at a computer screen all day not only sucks, but it sucks the vigor out of you as well. ;)
  12. Whoever named that article should be fired. Here's some quotes that show how they're "fed up" with "problems": 'Concerning the F-22, "it's not a matter of, do we need it? We have it," said Mullen. "It's a question of, how many do we need for the future?" "I am concerned that it is such an expensive system," he said, adding that the Air Force is seeking another 60 above the 183 F-22s they currently have.' and: 'The program has already cost more than 65 billion dollars -- each F-22 costs 350 million dollars.' So, in summary, the article can be called "US Top Brass say the F-22 costs too much freaking money" or "US Top Brass feel F-22 not worth it". But I fail to see all the "problems" its having. I was expecting more info about some of the corrosion problems it was experiencing. This is NOT an F-22 fanboy rant, this is an anti-journalism rant. I can't stand journalists and their half-assed attempts to get facts in the race to make money from advertising. I'm just as greedy and money-grubbing as the next guy, but not if it means getting the facts all screwed up. They are a necessary evil. Very necessary, and very evil. ;)
  13. Yep, it totally decides for me. I don't have to do squat. No experience points, no exploring, no crafting no slaying dragons, nothing. I'd quit playing CRPGs and just play pen and paper Dungeons and Dragons, but I'm afraid I would get spooked by all those 12 and 20 sided die that roll on their own and those character sheets that fill themselves out! ;) Speaking of this, Blizzard sure is raking in the cash for that game where the computer that just decides everyone should be level 80 and have the best gear in the game with no actual need to play, huh guys?. $150,000,000,00 on income a month for a game that does all the playing for you! That's almost a crime! :D
  14. I'm sorry, but I find this just crazy. If you have lost one engine in a 2 engine plane, all is definately not well, but you are no where close to being beyond hope of landing. Your training would probably kick in and you'd think "Oh crap...well, lets find some place close to land". If the pilot thought "Oh crap...well, the only place close to land is surrounded by houses, guess I'm going to have to ditch this perfectly servicible and flyable plane in the ocean" I'd find that about as sane as saying "Oh crap...I have 2 flat tires. Guess I'll just abandoned the car and torch it, the service station is on the other side of this residential neighborhood. I could lose control and drive into a house.".
  15. IIRC, that type of thing is towards the back of the flight manual.
  16. Good to hear! I too hope no one is discouraged from either buying it or trying the realistic FM because they are afraid of not even being able to do some circuits around the air base without crashing. The autopilot modes make it forgiving. With those turned off it becomes markedly less forgiving, but even then you are far from truly fighting the aircraft. And now that you mention it, I did find the Su-25T to be more difficult to just fly around in at first than the Ka-50.
  17. There's very little harm that can be done it this, but be aware that there's a long-standing argument that disabling this is nothing but a placebo. Some swear that they see improvement. However after reading the Tweakguides.com FAQ and some experimentation on my own, I'm convinced that the improvement is minimal, if any. You may also encounter system errors if you disable this. That being said, flight sims are strange animals, so I may even try this to test it out again.
  18. @Yo-Yo & GG Thanks for the info! I did try some orbits in the familiarization flight to slow down, but I was clumsy and still landed no where near where I intended, not to mention the fact that this "landing" would have been a crash without invincibility on. I found myself wishing for a window in the floor so I could see exactly what was underneath me.
  19. :D I found that to be correct. When I used rudder to spin around, once I let go, I continued to spin in that direction. I had to rebalance with rudder in the opposite direction. I guess what I was envisioning was more like the BF-109. Have you ever flown a half-way decent simulation of it? You must apply constant rudder to counteract the torque since there is no rudder trim if you want to keep it on the ball. This is what I imagined would be the case in Ka-50. What I should have done was thought of the P-38! This is true. I wasn't aggressive.
  20. A while ago I said that I would post a track of my first flight just to see how well I could fly it with no training. Well, my first flight was in the instant action mission and I forgot to save the track. No matter, it was uneventful...mostly. :D Sorry if I'm rambling here, but I'd like to share my impressions. First of all, I was surprised at how intuitive the aircraft is to fly. I have never, ever flown a helicopter, real or in a half-way decent simulator. Seriously guys, my only helicopter "sim" was Steel Talons in the arcade and Sega Genesis: http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?game_id=9785 :joystick: From some of the descriptions at SimHQ from those that flew beta versions, I was expecting it to be somewhere between flying a crippled pig and brick. Not so! It took like a second to figure out how to make it go forward, but something just seemed to click between the cyclic and collective movement that seemed very natural. I was also expecting it to fall out of the sky the moment I banked a little hard, but it stayed nice and stable. Another eye-opener was the rudder. I somehow got the idea that the helicopter would spin like a top if I didn't apply constant rudder. This obviously isn't the case, maybe it would be for a helicopter without a coaxial rotor? I had to check a couple times to make sure I didn't have any type of easy flight model on. My only problem was that I had no clue how to stop the damn thing. No, I don't mean land it and turn off the engine and avionics, I mean I don't really know how to make it stop moving forward! I flared a bit by pulling back on the cyclic and lowering the collective, but I don't exactly stop on a dime. I have mental images of helicopters coming to abrupt stops to land in movies and film clips from Vietnam. I kinda keep going for a kilometer or so before I start to get all kinds of beeps and horns warning me that I'm obviously going too slow. Maybe I should RTFM, maybe? ;) The last thing I did was watch the familiarization training and took control at the end. I was very proud of myself for landing unscathed in what seemed to be a very rough and messy landing until I realized that invulnerability is turned on in the track. I watched in dismay as I made my helicopter flopped around like a fish, only to see it right itself automatically with no damage. Oh, now I also see why Coyote is so picky when it comes to player-made 3D models. ;) :D I'm going to get many hours of enjoyment out of this one. I can only dream what a DCS module for an F-15 or a Su-27 would be like!
  21. Yep, you need the .cab file. That's your problem. Once I got that downloaded, I got the sim installed and running great! Go back into your account on the main page, you should be able to download the file.
  22. Go look at your other thread. ;)
  23. Hey Peter22! Take a look at your other thread about this. I had this to say: "I got that same error. Notice how it was looking for data1.cab on your desktop? It would have been nice if it told you to download both the exe file and the rar file. If you can, I would download the .cab file, put it on your desktop with your exe installer and try again. This is what I'm doing. If it works, I'll let you know. :D "

  25. Pick your favorite currency. Now convert the average Russian salary/wage to said currency. Now covert the average US/German/UK/etc salary/wage to that currency. Will that answer your question? Who knows. But this should be the first thing you consider.
