I know that the IRIAF's F-14s and the possibility of them being given special attention by Leatherneck has been discussed here before, but I have a few points I would like to cover. The F-14A's originally delivered to Iran in the 70s were near identical to the USN's, except that they were lacking the IRST system as Iran didn't like its quality, and wanted to wait for the better camera the USN put in later. (Which they didn't get, thanks to Iranian Revolution.) I doubt there will be an option to go with or without the IRST system, so this is out. The next big thing is the unreliability of the F-14A's early engines. The USN had lots of problems with them, and even upgraded variants, but the Iranians were stuck with the original engines and didn't have all the technical expertise that the US has. The TF30's were prone to stalling, and Iranians later on had the problem on takeoff which is pretty in depth but basically nozzles on fuel pumps resulted in fuel accumulating as engines spooled up and on takeoff engine would explode. I believe that Leatherneck has stated that engine problems will be modelled, and I look forward to a slider in options that allows you to increase or decrease chances of engine problems and there severity. This would make a lot of sense, as you could increase it by a lot if you were playing as Iranians in say, a late 80's scenario. Another slider I would like to see in the options would be cockpit wear. The Mig-21bis is an example of having great cockpit textures, and you can see the wear and tear through the smallest of details. A slider in the options for F-14 could turn the pit from brand new to chipped corners on the dash, paint chips on the stick, and tears on the ejection seat. The variations in electronics between the Iranian cats and the US cats are a lot more complicated and borderline classified, and I doubt most differences will be modelled. Partly because its unecessary: Iranian F-14a's electronics are near identical to the original US ones. Their was very very minute downgrades with the purpose being just to tell Congress that the Iranian Tomcats weren't as advanced as the Navy's. After the revolution, as Iran was low on trained personnel and up to their neck in problems relating to the complicated American machinery, their were a lot of compromises made. Half the time their radars wouldn't function properly. Lots of times the radars were modified to be intentionally downgraded to reduce stress on the system. The biggest example is the plane's AWG-9 being capped to locking and tracking one target at a time. Also, after the revolution US contractors got to work trying to limit the effectiveness of the Iranian Tomcats against coalition forces. Stuff was done to the IFF to allow detection of the planes from very far away and jammers were modified to make Iranian Aim-54a's much less effective. The final point is a lot more realistic and has to do with weaponry. Like their other electronics, Iranian Aim-54's were a lot less effective as time drove on, and eventually stocks started to deplete. This forced Iran to develop their own modifications, the most famous being the Hawk missiles that were heavily modified to be compatible with the F-14 and its radar. They worked, but could only be fired under set conditions, at a medium altitude and speed. This would be interesting to implement and a challenge for players to try to utilize. The later missile, which less is known about, is known as a Yasser. This is an extension of the project that uses a later Hawk model and utilizes a dumb bomb as a warhead.

Mig-17 is very similar to Mig-15. It's flight model would be different, engine management would be different, and the gunsight more advanced, but would it take as long as a typical module to do? Belsimtek seems to release modules at a good consistent pace, and I would love to see the early jets expanded into a more relevant era.

Magic I should be in, II doesn't quite fit in the model in game.
-
Where do you go for the research?
-
Definetely. R-13M1 might be on as similar level.
-
Both the Iraqi's and Indians retired their Mig-21's to fire Magics. I don't know how hard this would be to model in Lestherneck's Mig-21, but I imagine at worst, it would require the overhead panel to be installed similar to the one required for the guy pods and the tactical nuke.

Why would they do this

What are the inconsistencies that Ln's mig-21 has with the ASP in comparison to the manua?

Can someone tell me how to turn on the flood light in the Mig-21? All I know how to do is turn on the lights for the instruments and for the lettering.

When the F-14B's began appearing in fleets, where they brand new planes, airframe and all? Or where the F-14Bs just F-14As taken and upgraded with new avionics/systems. I've heard about F-14B's on their last leg around ten years ago appearing very worn and tired, at least on the inside. This implies that even the B's were still the same old airframes from the 70's but I am not sure.

I thought I remembered hearing somewhere that you can place RSBN stations in the mission editor.

That light doesn't really do anything for me anyway.

Possibility of other 109 Models as an addon?
Jaktaz replied to IronJockel's topic in DCS Core Wish List
Tbh other variants of bf-109s throughout the war would be great, but I'd mostly like to see early variants from the late 30''s, so we could do things like Spanish Civil War, against Republican I-16's (in development by OctopusG) -
I don't think I would want newer variants. Newer variants are same old migs but with newer systems integrated, usually western ones you would see on any other modern western aircraft, which we already see enough of. I would much rather see earlier migs, which alternate or lack of radar, perhaps lack of internal gun, different powerplants/engines, etc. This would just allow the Mig-21 to fit into more theatres.

Mig-21 also needs actual GCI, but I don't know if this is in LN's realm of expertise or if ED would need to implement it. Current GCI is just ripped off of awacs, which is trash to begin with. You call the GCI, and i gives you bearing, ETA, and altitude of the nearest bogie at a given time. GCI should be doing a lot more then that, such as vectoring you along a number of steerpoints to get on a bogie's tail, or at least vector numerous migs from different angles onto a strike package. GCI should also update the pilots with information, instead of just giving the temporal information when the pilot asks.

I was wondering what Leatherneck still had on their plate for completing the Mig-21 module. Recently I've heard that the ASP sight is still a work in progress, and I've seen Leatherneck release a number of updates, one being a radar fix and another revising the lighting in the cockpit. I'm curious what fixes/adjustments Mig-21 still requires before it is 100%. I'm not talking about additional content, such as campaigns, but any knowledge on those would be nice.

They need more ground units in general. WWII, and early cold war.

I remember seeing development updates on it along time ago, but I haven't heard much about it since.

Currently, the gunpods in the game are gsh-23's with ammo in fat pods hanging from the wings, which are great for ground attack but don't work very well for air to air because of all the drag they create. I would like it if Leatherneck added more gunpod options, such as smaller, streamlined pods that could be mounted underneath fuselage, near internal gun. These would carry less ammo then the Mi-8 gunpods that the mig-21 currently has access to, but they would still allow the mig-21 to compete in a fighter/interceptor role, while giving it the extra firepower to shred bombers. https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=images&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwjSi7el2rTNAhUN7GMKHcXWBkgQjRwIBw&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.mig-21.de%2Fenglish%2Ftechnicaldataarmament.htm&psig=AFQjCNHFHhv_9hmptWYNE8uPtVccdXdjYA&ust=1466446310166853 I realize that these were more often used on older mig-21s without an internal gun, but I'm sure that the mig-21 could mount similar weapons.

I don't think poor rear visibility would hamper the F-4U's performance too much.

http://www.leatherneck-sim.com/ If you scroll down, you can see what appears to be the 3d model of the Tomcat cockpits, and to the right of that there appears to be the 3d model of the F-4U. When was this added?
