I don't know what the waiting list is up to now but the Rhino is definitely worth it - theres a discord community to see the development and get in line for pre-orders.

One extra thing for the VP Rhino specifically is you can use the software to define physical stick limits - so you can get a more 1:1 stick position to what you see in the sim by limiting the pitch axis to 1/4 of the throw forward (real control sticks usually have much larger throw aft than forward)

You might be able to test if its modelled at all by firing the extinguisher while idling on the ramp. The bottle going off should kill the engine? -
I also have the VP Rhino - specifically for the DCS F-14 and it works OK with the caveats that the stick does trim to a forward leaning position on mission start - so your first action is almost always applying some aft trim to even it out. The autopilot I think is a known problem that it can knock itself off if the stick moves however I haven't really noticed that being a problem - the stick even follows the 1Hz back and forth motion once AP is engaged which is a nice touch.

Please not this tangent again. There is a lightyear of nuance between a barely capable brick that only ever hit bombers in testing and a 100nm laser beam of death. The Phoenix is neither extreme. Like most of the guys here - I'm really pleased with where the missile is kinematically. If you can show me NASA documentation vs in-game that close - I got nothing. I do expect some range / terminal velocity can be found in tweaking loft profiles, so let's see where that takes us in time.

Thats my entire point- all we have are some accounts saying its a no, and others saying it absolutely happened. After that its all how you select and weight the evidence unless you’ve got more.

Thats selective though. While I agree these techniques were all only ever used while doing ACM sorties with other friendlies during training and they likely have marginal at best improvements to performance at the risk of seriously bending the airplane which would probably make any sane pilot think twice of really doing it in combat. The reality is that if Pilot/RIO accounts on YT is the bar then you can see a recent discussion with Puck Howe where he goes into detail on how he was taught precisely these tricks. To be clear - I'm not suggesting Howe did any of this in combat sorties and by the time of his combat deployments he was flying D’s anyway - in just saying these techniques are as well “documented” in pilot accounts as many other accepted techniques. Pulling the TF30 bypass breaker anyone?

For the -A certainly, its of almost no value in the -B with the increased P/W ratio. This is really really advanced level stuff though - for 99% of pilots its just a lever to fiddle with that might wrench your wings off if you get excited and forget. Theoretically the WSP can only react to changes in IMN, so depending on what you know you're going to do (dogfighting is always thinking a move or few ahead) you can program the wings yourself. E.g if you decide you're going to unload and get more energy back by diving then you can program the wings aft manually to reduce your drag and accelerate faster, similarly if you are up high and you know the IAS is way down but IMN has still put the wings aft you could throw them forward ahead of the WSP happy that they wont break off and you'll get to good cornering speeds / tighter turn radius faster. There were also pilots / squadrons that were big flap users for the same reasons and with the same caveats that if you get too excited and forget, you've ruined your own chances. Some advice for new comers in the -A prior to getting into all these interesting "tricks" is really understand energy management, and intentionally choose when you're going to trade knots for angles. In the -A you cant just slap on the cans and get that energy back so you've got to spend it for position that will allow a shot, rather than heaving hard and hoping for the best.

Bug: Wings wont sweep past 50 degrees, either in emergency override or when commanded by the CADC. Indicator can be in auto with the commanded position at 68, but wings and tape wont go past 50. Bomb mode can make the captains bars move towards 58 degrees but it immediately tracks back to 50 degrees. Can I reproduce it 100%: Yes How to reproduce/ description: Start any instant action mission (Track file is "Takeoff" from Caucases map) - Move wings to 20 degrees and reset for auto. - Command aft by wing sweep hat on throttle, stops at 50 degrees. - Reset to auto. - Lift emergency lever and command wings to 68, stops at 50 degrees. I find the best trick is the press and hold method - it will only fire one round per depress. You can also cut the TTL to nearer 1s by flipping up the ACM cover

Alternatively you can listen to the first few episodes of the F-14 Tomcast featuring many Pilots and RIOs from its service. One account from a test pilot said that in symmetrical G loading the F-14 is structurally unbreakable, only the twisting moment of adding roll could add limitations.

Separate to it being a necessity to land on a very small area of deck on a (relatively speaking) tiny ship. The entire point of landing on speed AoA is that you are flying and controlling the descent directly. The other way of landing is akin to driving the jet towards the ground, cutting the power and trying to stall (flare) at the right moment - as counter intuitive as it feels at first, swapping to pitch for speed and throttle for altitude is a much more direct way to interact with the aerodynamic forces of your situation.

Are FFB effects still currently WIP / buggy? I've recently upgraded to an FFB stick and finding the AP and trim implementation a bit wonky. There's also quite a pronounced rumble on the stick whenever power is applied?

Just as an example here is VF-154 landing at Atsugi you’ll see the DLC is used repeatedly. The only thing to avoid is holding it out constantly- treat it more like a tap tap process to move your VV to exactly where you want to touch down. Don't hold the boards out to correct large glide slope deviation as you’ll end up with way too excessive sink rates without much time to correct.

It happens in any organisation thats used to a nigh unlimited budget suddenly having to pull the belt in. Whether its inter-service or inter-platform everyone is fighting over the same limited supply of money. At that point promises start being made with no real intention to deliver them because once we are the only game in town you don’t have alternatives left. Famously the Royal Navy lost their aircraft carriers to the RAF budget because the air force moved Australia a few thousand miles on a map to prove land based aircraft could cover the globe. When the Falklands war happened shortly thereafter this was shown to be complete hogwash, but by then the carriers are scrapped.

Its even more bizarre considering how fast the NATF program got shut down. The AF can at least fall back on the F-15EX but thats less to do with their own foresight and more to do with foreign sales keeping the doors open for 20 years.

You also have to consider range. At the moment with no real peer or air threat the CV is content to throw 60 Super Hornets into the fray and accept 1/3 of them will be refuelling the next 1/3 and the other 1/3 will be down getting turned around for the next sortie. One huge thing thats gone unappreciated in the low end conflicts is the huge legs the F-14s had, see the War on Terror and the distances they were travelling to get over Afghanistan.

So much this. There are also physical space limitations when referring to non programmable logic gates, although individually they are quite small they do add up, then you have power and heat dissipation to think of. Hence the gates have to be carefully chosen and can result in these seemingly imprecise cells and bins.
