I don't find it amazing at all. At times I've found myself trying to help people who are partially-sighted make sense of what they're trying to do, and without seeing how they've got their cockpit and displays set up it's bloody hard. I've tried to help people ranging from 70+ years old down to about 13, meaning I've dealt with learners who sometimes aren't quite "all there" down to those who haven't tried anything more complex than Animal Crossing. For anyone relatively new to flight sims DCS has a huge learning curve, and many people find it hard to tab out of the sim and trawl through a 500-page manual to find the one footnote that explains what they're doing wrong, especially when they don't even know the right name for the switch they need to flip. The ability to let a student see what an instructor is doing in real time and vice versa would be such a boon. To me it can sometimes be amazing that some people need dozens of driving lessons before they manage to pass their driving tests, especially as I was lucky enough to do it with 7 or 8, but it doesn't change the fact that some do need the extra guidance. I'm not suggesting that ED need to make shared controls available in every plane, but just let us sit there and watch, natively, without having to resort to things like Skype to work out why someone isn't able to IFF the bandit you're practicing on, or if they're looking in totally the wrong place with their TGP. ED announced a massive incentive for new players today. If we can help them make sense of things before they get disheartened and give up then its going to be good for all of us.

Skype is an option I guess. While I appreciate that you can kind of teach in the dedicated training aircraft, I'm talking about being sat on the pilot's lap while still being able to look around as if you were flying yourself. Being able to see his whole cockpit from his perspective would be such a great aid when teaching the more complex systems. All it would take in the 2-seater aircraft would be moving the second viewpoint's centered position, or adding another position to the single-seaters. You wouldn't even need any control sharing, just the ability to observe.
-
Apologies if this has cropped up before. Now that shared cockpits have been available for a while and most of the kinks ironed out, I would love to see DCS include the ability for an instructor to sit in any aircraft in order to really help new pilots get to grips with the systems. For example, I recently tried to help a friend get used to the basics of BVR and ACM in the Hornet, using a simple mission with drone targets. We flew in close formation in the hopes that he would see virtually the same picture I had, but trying to get things matched up (range, elevation, mode, target designation etc.) proved to be quite hard. It would be great if we could have an "instructor" slot for single-crew aircraft that would allow you to sit in the pilot seat with the student, enabling you to see his switches and displays so that you can give meaningful help when they're struggling with something. Is this something that ED has considered, or might consider in the future?

I believe he is referring to the original Streamdeck, as opposed to the Mini or XL versions.

A whole load of technical stuff here that I can't begin to understand, but I do think I get the end goal, and it sounds wonderful. I really hope ED is able to work with you on this idea.

I haven't tried using my Streamdeck with the P-47 yet, but do you have an export script for it? Check in "Users/yourname/Saved Games/DCS/Scripts/DCS-ExportScript/ExportsModules" There wasn't a script for it when I last looked, but someone might have done one by now.

Something in 2.7 has completely killed VR for me. I dropped everything back to the VR default settings, but even in the menu screen I only get around 14fps. In-game it dropped to 8. I need to do some diagnostics to see if something is off.
-
The Updater GUI has stopped working for me today. It died after I flew my first flight with 2.7 and the sim crashed. Now all I get is the splash screen before the process ends. I've tried deleting everything in the folder I'd stuck it in, redownloaded and tried again, but the same thing is happening. Anyone got any ideas?

Long wait times to jump into MP slots

Thanks. I'll give it a try. Currently downloading 2.7 though, and that'll take around a day, so I'll probably have a go this weekend. Will let you know the results. -
It would clearly be useless against a moving target, but great for fixed emplacements such as larger SAM sites, command posts and the like. I really hope its a feature they're going to implement. I did read a few comments from people saying that getting the FCR is not a given, and that many real-world Longbow deployed without FCR as you only need one radar-equipped aircraft to disseminate target data all the others in the strike package. However, while that may be true it still suggests that the FCR is central to the tactics and operation of Longbow Apaches. I would still say that we should get the FCR as without it the aircraft's capabilities would be seriously limited.

I've been trying to think back to the 90's when I had Longbow 2, and I'm wondering if some of the features I remember from that will be a thing in DCS. One particularly cool thing that I remember was popping the radar above a hill, doing a sweep for targets and then dropping back into cover. I seem to remember that you had the ability to "draw" a killbox over the radar's stored targets display and then loft Hellfires into that area, with the computer prioritising the target sequence for you. I have no idea if it was a real-world thing, or even if I just dreamt it one night.

Check if you're running the Streamdeck software as an administrator in Windows. I ran into this when I first got mine. If DCS is running in admin mode then the Streamdeck software needs to be run as admin as well, and vice versa if I recall correctly.

Guys, I've run into a major problem when flying on some multiplayer servers recently. I regularly fly on a private server with no problems, but today we tried flying the Vegas_Helo_Deathmatch mission on it and it took over 12 minutes to actually load into an aircraft every time I tried. This is not specific to this mission and server. I've run into this on various servers from time to time. If I try another server then I can usually load in within a few seconds. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this? It doesn't seem to matter if the server is busy or not. It can happen if there are 30 clients or just 3.

I just got my shiny new TPR unit today, and initial feelings are good. It going to take a lot of getting used to after 10 years with my clunky old Saitek pedals, but thats normal for any hardware change. The problem I'm having it the the brake axes only seem to travel through half their range. I've checked and calibrated them in Windows, and they're showing full range from 0-65535 on all axes, but when I just tried them out in a couple of planes in DCS the brakes only release to 50%. I've looked at them in the control bindings, and where my old pedals would "rest" at full-scale deflection, these return to the center of the axis range instead. For a couple of aircraft I couldn't even map them using the default detection method of selecting the control and then moving them full-range. I had to manually select the axis in order to bind them. Has anyone else run into this, and how did you fix it?

If you're just trying to display the remain chaff and flares on the streamdeck, then looking at this all you'd need to do is set the Title Text Change parameter to 2000 and 2001 for the buttons you're trying to use. Is that what you're after?

Going to start this with a disclaimer that I don't understand 99.9% of the stuff in the export scripts and have virtually no knowledge of LUA. From a layman's point of view, it looks to me as though this line is checking to see if the CMSP Mode Selector dial is in any other position than OFF. In the export script for the A-10C I found this: [364] = "%0.1f", -- PNT-LEV-CMSP-MODE (Master CMS Mode Select) So I'm guessing that if the selector is off the script won't send any data to the streamdeck, but when the CMSP is in Standby or on the exports 2014-2021 will be available. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. I'm trying to understand all this too.
-
I've just checked this and for most exports it does seem to work. I've checked through the whole UFC and CDU so far, and the only thing that didn't work was the SPC button on the CDU, so I'm guessing some of the exports have changed slightly. In this case its not a problem as I just rebound it to trigger the SPC key on the UFC again. Will have to work through the other bindings to see if the rest of the exports match up.

I've been trying to set up the COMM 1 and COMM 2 displays in the Harrier following this, but they just refuse to work. I have checked the export script, and these lines are in there, so no sure what's going on: ExportScript.Tools.SendData(2023, string.format("%s", lUFC_Chnl1)) -- string with max 2 charachters ExportScript.Tools.SendData(2024, string.format("%s", lUFC_Chnl2)) -- string with max 2 charachters ExportScript.Tools.SendData(2025, string.format("%s", lUFC_Display)) -- string with max 8 charachters I've set the DCS ID for Title Text Change to 2023, and left "display string unaltered" checked. DCS IDs 2023-2024 are blank in the DCS COMMS window. The values for the ODUs in the DCS COMMS are also blank, even though they are exporting correctly to the streamdeck. As an example, this is how things appear if I bring up the TCN options: However, if I try to display the radios I get this: As you can see, the ODUs for the TCN show up in DCS COMMS, but the radios don't, so something odd seems to be happening here. Getting the radio channels works fine for me in the F-18. Its just the Harrier that's confusing me. Does anyone have any clever suggestions?

Tutorial: Introduction to Lua scripting
frostycab replied to Yurgon's topic in Scripting Tips, Tricks & Issues
Hello again! Its the complete n00b again! Yay! I found a couple of LUA courses online that are actually really cheap until midnight tonight (GMT), and I'm wondering if someone can help me decide which one would be best for me to try with a view to being able to create simple scripts for DCS. (Even just understanding other people's scripts would be useful!) Is there any chance somebody could just have a quick glance at the overview for a couple of these and advise me which one you think would be most beneficial? https://www.udemy.com/course/lua-programming-master-the-basics/ https://www.udemy.com/course/lua-programming-become-a-master-of-lua/ https://www.udemy.com/course/lua-programming-course-a-path-to-your-career-in-lua/ https://www.udemy.com/course/luamasterclass/ https://www.udemy.com/course/lua-programming-master-the-fundamentals-for-beginners/ There seems to be a huge overlap, which I suppose one should expect, but it makes it hard to know which one to go for. As I said in an earlier post, my last experience with programming was using LOGO about 40 years ago when I was about 10, so I'm going in as a complete newbie. I'm already working my way through a free Python course from that site, and also just picked up another one entitled "LUA's Core Syntax" which I assume will have some overlap on basic principles, but would like to pick up one of these other courses which hopefully will be more relevant to what I need to know. Thanks everyone. -
Thank you Grimes! Wow, that looks complicated, but I think I kind of understand the basic gist of it. I'm just on my way to bed now but I'll give it a go tomorrow afternoon as soon as I get a chance. Can you recommend a good book or resource for me to try with a view to learning how to do all this stuff myself? The last time I did anything even remotely connected with programming was using Basic or Logo when I was about 10 years old, nearly 40 years ago and on an Apple IIe. There seem to be so many different scripting languages(?)/formats, and without any background in this stuff I can't even work out what I need to learn, let alone how. LOL (Actually, I tell a lie. I did have to do a computing module when I started at university, and I still have nightmares about it. We were plonked in front of a computer, and just told to write a program that would take temperature readings from an attached probe and graph them on the screen, using C++. Most of us hadn't even heard of C++. No instruction, no guidance. This was on day 1. Needless to say, I and many others failed that module.)

Hi everyone! I apologise if this has already been answered already (which it probably has), but there are just so many posts here that I can't find the answer I'm looking for. I have no experience with scripting, and all I've done so far is use methods I've seen explained on YouTube videos. I'm trying to work out how to get ground units to endlessly respawn for a training mission. I've managed to do this with air units using MIST, and using DO SCRIPT with this script that I saw someone use on YouTube on a repetitive trigger: if not Group.getByName('MiG1') then mist.respawnGroup('MiG1', true) end Now I'm assuming that the first line checks to see if the named group exists, and if it doesn't then the second line spawns the group back in. Is this right? (Remember I know NOTHING about scripting.) Anyway, this works fine in the air. Shoot down the plane, and when it hits the ground a new one spawns. Perfect. Now I've tried testing the same concept (without any modifications except for the group names) on trucks on the ground. The trucks are set up to just sit there, not follow a route. When I destroy the trucks though I just get left with the burning wreckage, and nothing new spawns in. Is it because the wreckage occupies the spawn location? Has anyone got time to explain why this is happening, and how I can fix it? The eventual purpose is to endlessly respawn SAM sites for friends to practice use of HARMs, Sidearms and other weapons on SEAD missions. Thanks for reading.

Hi Flappie, and thanks for the info. I'll pass it along to him. I don't think there's much chance of overclocking being the issue, as he's using an off-the-shelf laptop and isn't the type to go tinkering with things under the hood. I had to help him with opening a file explorer window. LOL We'll see if the problem presents itself again and if so continue to try to troubleshoot. Thanks for your help.

Hi Flappie! Managed to get hold of him this evening. I've attached the log files you asked for. I hope they're the right ones. The date on the most recent dcs.log-20xxxxx file seems to suggest that it was created before the errors cropped up, but I've double-checked and it is the most recent one he has. I've also told him to rename his "saved games/dcs" folder and asked him to try to reproduce the issue. I'll update once he gets back to me with the results of his testing. dcs.log dcs.log-20210109-111348.zip
