ICBM's benefit from lattice fins because they are travelling at a high mach. The MOAB benefits from lattice fins because it travels at a low mach number. TVC compliments control fins it does not replace them without control surfaces any missile would be unstable in flight that why the IRIS-T has control fins and TVC. The R-77 trades high alpha for the disadvantage of spending most of it's trajectory time in a state of high drag. The range of the R-77 also decreases alot quicker than convetional control surface when vectoring.

I think the combination of the LITENING pods FLIR and GAU-8 will become a frustrating problem for the Hokum drivers. Viper I think you can up those odds to 1:99 ;) I'm really looking forward to giving whirlybird pilots an in depth cutaway view of their helis.

That's just Semantics, High alpha requires high energy. In the transonic mach area the R-77 lattice surface area and leading edge of the lattice fin creates a "choked flow" effect which creates alot of drag, the lattice fin also generates a shockwave through the internal areas of the lattice. The R-77 is optimal at high and low mach numbers. If you ever come across a book written by Eugene Fleeman called "tactical missile design" pick it up and turn to page 40. Eugene Fleeman was a missile design engineer for the US for 36 years. He goes into great depth about the pros and cons of lattice contol surfaces. In the 80's the US and Germany done in depth tests on the effects of lattice fins, German engineers decided against using lattice fins on the IRIS-T which is a HOB HIGH AOA SRIRM and the US has only used the Lattice fin on the MOAB. The US are currently testing lattice fins for the JDAM.

I read this great article on Russian IADS used by the Iraqi defence in operation Desert Storm it's widley agreed upon that it was the most advanced Russian based IADS outside of the Warpact featuring mainly Russian hardware with RF and landline uplinks. The Iraqi IADS lasted about 2 hours into ODS. The R-77 is not superiour in several aspects. One of the negative factors of the R-77 is its RCS and I'm curious to see if they drop the trademark lattice fins when Russia release the LO PAK-FA. It would be illogical to use a missile with a huge RCS on a LO fighter.

Forget the fighters if you're spotted by an enemy in the upcoming A-10C module and you find yourself on the wrong end of a GAU-8, fighters will be the least of your worries.

This practise is only for the crazy. Here's a crazy one for you, In the city were I live, an ancient law exsists stating that it's legal to kill a Welshman within the Roman walls of the city after 2 A.M. but you must only do it with a longbow. http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/1230854

I've read up on on the JSF's EOSS a while ago and your statement is correct, DAS is more orientated towards SA, DAS is not used for weapons guidance, DAS tracks airbourne/ground targets and sends the target information to EOTS for weapons guidance. Intrestingly EOTS is also able to automatically align the aircraft to boresight of a tracked target. The PDF's below are worth reading. http://www.lockheedmartin.com/data/assets/1232.pdf http://norway.usembassy.gov/root/pdfs/volume-1---executive-summary---part-1_dista.pdf http://www.lockheedmartin.com/data/assets/mfc/Photos/MFC_F-35LightningII-Product_Card.pdf

Does ED have detailed technical specs on the Shkval optics?
Vault replied to Reticuli's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
AKAIK The imaging for the Shkval-V on the KA-50 is proccesed by the Okhotnik Image proccesing system which has BOTH TV/IR outputs. -

Very nice find! these videos are brilliant and unique. Thanks for sharing.

TBH I'm not much of a Heli fan myself. I'll really dedicate myself to some serious sim time when they release the A-10C module.

C'mon GGTharos you got to love the Hog.
-
LOL. OK we'll see, My Hog v's your Apache. I wonder how the Apache will fair against a GAU 8. ;)
-
I can't wait to get my hands on the Hog especially if it's anything like the high fidelity modelling we've witnessed on the KA-50. This module will be the pinnacle of the DCS series.

I didn't diss the R-77 re-read what I posted. Because of the larger surface area of the lattice fins I stated that I think that the R-77 missile would perform very well in the low to medium envelope of the R-77's WEZ. In the far range envelope of the R-77's WEZ, I suspect that the drag created by the huge surface area of the R-77's lattice fins would diminish energy which in turn will reduce the amount of alpha the missile can pull.

Does any Russian hardware (SAM/EW/AWAC) even have any type of datalink network that's capable of the handing target data to the missiles guidance computer?. The R-77 trades huge amounts of its potential energy for high alpha. I think from a logical point of view that the combat unproven R-77 is good in the short to meduim range of it's WEZ. In the long run I highly suspect the lattice fins of creating large amounts of drag. How can you compare a combat proven missile against an unproven missile?, What makes you think that the AIM-120 needs to be "seriously modified especially in terms of maneuverability to be competitive?". Posts that are primarily indiscriminate comments and technological verbal attacks by fanbois on proven hardware are just plain stoopid. 35 International countries use the AMRAAM as their primary MRAAM!. Yes that's right 35 countries!. They can't all be wrong.

Helpful as a reference for damage modelling maybe?

If anyone comes across any high definition high quality pictures of my favourite aircraft like the one below the Raytheon Bombardier Sentinel R1 ASTOR can you please post or send me the links. Here's two hi-definition pictures of the RAF Red Arrows BAE Hawks.

8 pages of comments and not a single person can give any reason why any Russian fighter is superiour to the Raptor. I rest my case.

Hajduk the US's wealth is based on black gold (that's why all oil is traded in dollars) the US does have big debt but it also has alot of potential money. Now if you threaten the US's wealth like Iran just have by attempting to trade oil in Euro's then the US's wealth will be in danger. The US are far from short of a buck.

Boberro this scenario is exactly what the F-22 was designed for, fighting against overwhelming odds and engaging multiple 4-4.5 gen platforms.

Russian technology? Where? I don't see any!. All I see is a few demonstrators and old fighters that are unfit for the skies. Russian nukes? All Russian nukes have ever been successful at is killing poisioning their own people and land ask any Russian person who lives around the Mayak Chemical combine who have to live with billions of curies of weapons grade plutonium.
