  1. Fair enough, I guess stuff like "Enter" and "Backspace" are quire obvious, but what's the syntax for putting NumPad buttons in there?
  2. Hey, just wanted to check in and say thanks for the tips earlier. I did manage to map enough buttons on my joystick base (with modifiers) to go through the frequencies in FC3 aircraft, as long as nobody is using channels with 0.01 MHz ;) One question, the Ctrl+Shift+Esc combination to cycle the in-game overlay states is quite inconvenient. I know I can change it in the text file, but I'm not sure what syntax to use for various buttons. For example, how would I put it on a Joystick button with a modifier being a Throttle button?
  3. This has been pointed out and discussed before, I think it was concluded this is realistic, because Soviet/Russian doctrine was to avoid negative G, and the airframes are not designed for it. If you need to dive, roll inverted, pull, then roll out.
  4. Oh yeah, forgot about the "fun" button! But I thought ASC in the Flanker only affects pitch. The Fulcrum still has way more rudder authority, and is twitchier in roll.
  5. From reading the other threads on this, it seems the Mig-29 is supposed to be a more fiesty, direct and "raw" aircraft to fly than the Su-27. You might perceive that as more "real", but it doesn't actually mean either model is closer or further from their respective realities. They're different aircraft. It only means our Mig-29 feels more exciting to fly.
  6. I think the pagefile works better if it's on a different drive to the game, because then they're not both trying to read the same drive. But the pagefile benefits a lot more from being on SSD, that needs read/write speed more than the game files. I have 32GB pagefile on my C: SSD and DCS on my D: HDD and that works for me for now. Loading into a server still takes about 5 minutes, but that's OK, just leave the PC alone, close all other apps don't touch anything and it shouldn't crash. In game it's playable with slight, tolerable, FPS drops when other people connect. You have slightly more RAM than me, everything else the same, so you should be fine.
  7. See my earlier thread on this: https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=221946 What worked for me was to increase my pagefile size to 32GB. It's now playable, although after some time I start getting those bad FPS drops again. I guess computer upgrade is the real answer.
  8. I for one wasn't complaining, just adding observations. In fact, I nearly started a thread in the Su-33 section to ask why the rudder on the Flanker is so anemic compared to the new Mig-29. The Fulcrum can actually do a slow speed wingover... the Flanker just loses rudder authority completely. I love the power of the rudder on this thing, and I don't have issues with directional stability using small inputs. The question is though, is the artificial soft stop at 6 degrees modelled in game in some way? Or do you just have to use muscle memory to not deflect the rudder beyond this?
  9. I think he means in flight. Compared to the Su-33 at least, Mig-29 has ridiculous rudder authority. Almost side-cobra level. I didn't find it too twitchy at small input, and I wouldn't presume to claim it's incorrect, but I would also be interested to hear expert opinion on this matter.
  10. Hello everyone, I haven't been part of this forum community for very long, haven't actually been playing DCS that long either, although I have been flying other sims for a while. But, if any of you were watching VUAF last weekend you may have already heard my voice! That's not exactly why I'm here, although it's as good an intro as any. All that kind of makes me my squadron's Public Relations officer. My squadron, X51, recently had their Aerobatics team debut at VUAF. But, X51 Squadron is a hell of a lot more than 6 people in Harriers. We have a great bunch of guys spread out across the world, and we're always looking for more members. If you're just starting out and looking to train up, or experienced and looking for some good wingmen, drop in to our Discord (invite in video below) and join up! We do organised trainings, formation flying, combat, and we're brewing up a second Aerobatics team for future events! We have regular events where we run our own server with in-house designed co-op missions and, of course, we fly as a team on public servers! We fly in DCS, but also IL2 and War Thunder! Anyway, they say a picture speaks a thousand words, but what about a video? Here's a quick teaser for our Aerobatics team. Discord invite is at the end of the video, if you fancy popping in and saying hi! I'll also leave this here. You can find the full display on VUAF's own channels but I think this highlight reel from one of our members sums it up quite well. If you have any questions reply to the thread or PM me, I'm always happy to answer and chat :) And here's out squadron webpage: https://x51squadron.com/
  11. Thanks, I just wanted to check I wasn't missing something before I jumped through those hoops. I'll have to see if I have enough spare buttons on my HOTAS :)
  12. Thanks for the update, the overlay is very handy but am I right in thinking it's read only? I was expecting to be able to change frequencies in FC3 aircraft using the overlay, but seems I still need to take my VR headset off and Alt+Tab to do that, which isn't ideal. Am I missing something? Is this planned future functionality?
  13. Apologies for the noob question, but what navigation aids are available on the Caucasus map? I flew a fairly long sortie earlier and I was constantly switching to the F11 map, but the information on it is lacking, unless I just don't know how to use it. The info coming if from EWR etc. is fantastic but I can't tie it up. Am I expected to memorise where every Airfield and FARP is? Is there a way to make these display on the F11 map so I'm not flying blind?
  14. Just want to bring this up again as I had time to fly a long-ish sortie on BuddySpike. Initial load got worse, but a it of waiting and it worked second time. The real issue was that after about 25 minutes of flying, I started getting those ridiculous 1 FPS lag spikes again. Usually not too long, although one happened on finals and caused me to crash. Is this the pagefile "filling up" as I spend more and more time in the server and more players/units spawn and move around?
  15. So has either the ship speed or the loadout changed in some of the missions? Or is there just a bug in the interaction at the current speeds/loadouts? I also played Mission 5 (evening take-off F-16 intercept) and had no issues getting airborne, AI followed fine too. Edit: I noticed the tanker but it's probably not that useful. Mission events unfold quite quickly, especially that air strike, by the time you fly to it and fill up those Hornets are RTB.
  16. Thank you for the detailed reply, that makes sense. I might try the workaround. I did notice later in the mission that I have a "wingman 4" that took off from the carrier, but he got off the ship fine. He also ran out of fuel though, and quite a bit before me. Spotted this "moved to nearest airbase that takes 3" in an earlier mission too, the one where you have to co-ordinate bombing Kutaisi. But in that one it didn't break the mission (actually that one is quite easy to win even with wrong start position). Keep us updated if this gets worked on or hotfixed :)
  17. I was playing Mission 9 of the Sea Dragon campaign today, the one where you have to defend the carrier battle group from a swarm of angry Hornets. Overall, well designed mission, challenging and fun, I would like to play it a few times as practice... but... there are some elements that don't make sense: - take off from Batumi. Huh?! No scramble from the carrier? OK - wait, Batumi is hostile, there's an AA gun right at the end of the runway, both my wingmen are fireballs on the tarmac before I'm even wheels up, lucky it went for them not me. What the?! - strike incoming to carrier, tons of Harpoons in the air... I'm nowhere near... because I'm still in transit from Batumi! So... why is the take-off there again? I got into some action eventually, and all but one of the Harpoons was shot down by the ships, but by the time I was done with a dogfight and chasing some Hornets that were running away, I didn't have enough fuel to make the landing. I called it a close win ;) Is the mission meant to be like this? Shall I stick it in the mission editor and try to correct some of these issues myself?
  18. This is just a general problem with updates messing up bindings. Check that the slider has not been defaulted to something else. If you're 100% sure there's no clash, try to unbind it, restart game, re-bind. If that doesn't work you might have to wipe your bindings and start from scratch to get rid of that error.
  19. RWR doesn't have perfect 360 by 360 coverage, in fact it has pretty large blind spots especially below the plane. If you're talking about SAMs you might have had coincidences where they were constantly in your blind spot when scanning you, and not scanning you when they weren't. I don't know exactly what the blind spots are on the Mig-29, but on the Su-33, the RWR won't see anything in a 90 degree cone directly above and below you.
  20. Yes, actually I can imagine if your throttle has physical detents then it would be maddening if they were in the wrong place. Mine has none but quite a long travel, and in VR muscle memory only gets you so far, so it's nice to have a wide zone where I know I'm in mil power but not AB.
  21. I've never had this happen to me, but I have had sudden no-warning black-out when pitching down. This raises an interesting question, since this topic came up in various Mig-29 PFM threads with regards to that plane having almost no downward pitch authority at speed. Russian doctrine regarding negative Gs was brought up, and it seems the behaviour is correct. So then, shouldn't the Su-33 also be a bit more limited in its ability to pitch down suddenly at speed, if neither the airframe nor the pilot can take it?
  22. The aircraft is challenging to fly but you really feel in control, much more like a WWII warbird than some of the other stuff we have. Actually, with the automatically deploying slats it kind of feels like a Bf 109 on speed. It's only my second DCS plane (first was Su-33) but it feels very raw and exhilarating, I really like it! For stick curves, 15 on pitch and yaw just to give me a bit more accuracy for landing and that was all I needed. Maybe my expectations are low but I have TWCS and haven't done anything to the throttle axis. I just move it and watch the lights for AB. If anything, the gap helps a lot because I don't have to squint at the tachometer to make sure I'm at military power when I need to make quick throttle changes in combat.
  23. If you want to get a bit of "easy mode" in carrier landings, either because you're just starting and practicing or when you've had a long mission and you don't want to mess it up: Learn to use the autothrottle. Seriously, that feature is there for this exact reason and it's amazing. Set speed to 260, focus on AoA and follow the circles. Your workload is magically halved. If you need to adjust glidepath, nudge the speed setting up or down to 270 or 250, then back to 260 when you're on slope. Please don't land at 300km/h your landing gear won't be happy. I've slammed this plane down at some ridiculous speeds and angles and there don't seem to be too many instant consequences, but it's not "right". For flaps, I used to get this wrong but now I'm pretty sure "flaps down" and "landing flaps" do the same thing. Someone correct me if I'm wrong please, but here's my understanding: The flaps on this bird are semi-automatic. The only thing "up" and "down" does it basically tells the computer what the default should be, from which it adjusts automatically. So "down" should use 100% as you slow down, without you having to manually select landing. There's no separate cockpit indicator for it anyway.
  24. As I suspected, thanks for the confirmation! :) why is this paragraph not in the Mig-29 manual?!
  25. Thanks! How do I read the scale for TAS/ground speed? It seems to be marked for Mach only. What does "skinny needle at 1.2" mean? 1200km/h TAS?
