I decided it was high time to improve my MiG-21 experience and get some cockpit mods. I tried a "clean cockpit" mod and it looks gorgeous. I also tried a "clear canopy" mod and that made a world of difference to my spotting etc. Great. But, since each of those mods is an option I select in the custom cockpit dropdown on the "special" tab in options... I can't use both at the same time. Anyone can help me, show me how to merge the mods into one or have them both active together?

Based on advice from another thread, I tried the second option under the "special" settings tab for how the PTT buttons behave. So far so good. I hit "/" then the PTT and I get the radio menu for that radio. I can talk to AWACS fine but somehow wingmen ignore me on the same frequency. If I go select the first option from the Special tab, I get the radio menu as soon as I press PTT and wingmen respond through there. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

Great tutorial, exactly what I wanted to see as well. So if I set both priorities to "single", then Jester pops chaff or flare whenever he feels is necessary? Is he good enough at this to just leave it there and rely on it?

Why are the f14 instrument clusters so poorly designed?
VC replied to lancerr's topic in DCS: F-14A & B
Oh yeah, I tried the Bug on that weekend it was free and the experience saved me a lot of money! I've got used to the Eagle now, very capable plane and fun to fly. '80s pit also looks nice and feels very cool to sit in. Still some illogical elements to the HUD design, e.g. the direction the airspeed tape moves in feels backwards to me. -

1. The Su-33 was my first DCS plane, Mig-29 second and Su-27 third. I love the layout of the Russian cockpits and HUDs and being used to that was the main cause of my difficulties transitioning to F-15. Despite that existing bias as you describe, that I completely agree with, I prefer the Tomcat pit to the Flanker (as far as logical layout of head down analogue instruments is concerned). 4. One or two things would be handy but this one really is sign of the times. I believe the limitation was what and how much the HUD projectors at the time could physically display, not unwillingness or poor decision making in design of what to put there. -
So it's wrong to bind it to a wheel that stays where you put it? Do the manoeuvre flaps go back in when you stop holding the wheel too?
-
I was really looking forward to using this but it doesn't seem to work. I can see the "Custom" option in the dropdown in the "Special" settings for MiG-21bis, but selecting it doesn't seem to do anything. :(
-
If you bind it to a rotary or slider axis it stays where you put it.
-
That makes a great deal of sense and also explains why the wheel is on the stick (as opposed to the throttle). My setup at home, my throttle has way more buttons and axes than my stick, so a lot of functions (including DLC) that are on the stick in the real Tomcat are on the throttle for me. This makes it a bit less "natural", shame I can't map it realistically and take advantage of the feeling as you describe it.

Which Jester menu is that under? And does it work fine if you override it like that? Where are you seeing 66 alignment? RIO seat or Pilot seat?
-
I thought about this and tried to make up my own justifications. Firstly, I believe it's a wheel not a switch (I bound it as such on my own controls). So I think it has something to do with the position you left it in. E.g. normally the manoeuvre flaps would be in, so wheel all the way forward, hit DLC button, hey presto spoilers are all the way out, now you can bring them back in. Note this is pure speculation on my part.

Sorry my bad, I thought it was a game option, I've seen it in the settings, didn't realise it had to be implemented plane by plane. I don't agree with. The location of the analogue instruments on the F-14 panel is about as logical as it gets (see my previous post). I doubt that after designing carrier fighters for 30 years at that point Grumman (or other US fighter makers) "lacked understanding" of how to make an ergonomic cockpit. These guys were expert engineers that worked with the pilots. The complaint in the original post is to do with lack of information on the HUD, which is a sign of the times but far from crippling in the ability to fly and fight the aircraft. -
oh, I thought this was a generic game setting not a plane specific one (I haven't tried)

To be honest, being used to not having a HUD through flying WWII props in IL2, the F-14 instrumentation is about as close to optimal layout as I can think. "Close your eyes and imagine where an instrument should be, open you eyes and it's there". Sure, stuff isn't on the HUD, but once you learn the symbology, I find the minimalism is actually really helpful. I hate the clutter of the F-15 HUD. I love this '70s pit 8) Flying in VR I have no issue glancing over or around the stick to see the HSI/TDI. If you play on screen, there's an option somewhere in the game menu to hide the stick. This should help you see better. I also thought the RWR was illogical, then I understood it. The highest threat is on the outside, not because it's furthest (that would be backwards), but because this gives you the widest possible scale to judge bearing accurately for things you really need to notch. It's counter-intuitive but very clever. I do find Beryoza a lot easier to read at a glance and understand intuitively (I guess that's the point of it), but with practice the US RWRs tell you a lot, lot more. My only complaint about F-14 instruments is the ASI is impossible to read a glance. I understand the logic as to why the Mach scale is more prominent, but it's still very annoying, especially in ACM or landing pattern As for Su-27, the SA you have in that thing is very unrealistic. Don't use that as comparison. At least compare an F-15 or a MiG-29. -
Thought as much, thanks for confirmation!

I noticed last night that while tracking multiple targets in TWS, there is no "X" on the TDI for center mass of the tracked targets, and the radar cone doesn't slew automatically to follow them when I turn to crank. I ordered Jester to "scan azimuth auto" but that didn't help. Is there something else I need to do? Or is this feature not fully implemented yet?
-
From what I gather reading another thread, you need to hit "master reset" to get the CADC to re-engage properly if this is mis-behaving.
-
Thank you. There are so many posts here it's difficult to read everything and sift the useful info, sorry for adding to the clutter but I appreaciate you taking the time to repeat the information here  So I just assume it's happened then, missile about 10nm from target I guess. Works for me.

I flew the "Defend the fleet" single mission as a way to get the hang of BVR, TID and the AIM-54. Really impressed, Jester is in TWS Auto by default, it probably took me fewer button presses to bring down both Tu-22s (at the same time) than it would have in an FC3 aircraft. But, I did not see the time to target start blinking on the TID. I assume this means my Phoenixes never went active? Does the WCS not issue the active command automatically once they reach their active range? Do I need to do something else, tell Jester to do something, or hop into RIO pit and do it myself?
-
Yes, it's the same button on the stick that enables the DLC when flaps are down. With flaps up, it dumps CM instead (whatever you told Jester to load).
-
Maybe I'm just being blind here but I can't find a section in the manual that explains the VDI symbology in detail in various modes. I'd expect some labelled pictures but all I see are various references to "VDI will show you this" but not explaining how to read it. E.g. in attack mode, it's wonderfully minimalist (which I'm a huge fan of) but I'm struggling to guess what the tape actually means etc. Also is it supposed to have guidance symbology in cruise mode or ILS symbology in landing mode? Are there switches I need to flip?
-
If you notice this happen mid-flight, can you hit master reset while flying to fix it or are you going to break something on the plane doing this? Also, is it just me or does the lever "loop"? If it's full forward and I accidentally scroll the mouse a bit too far, it jumps to the other end (oversweep setting). This seems like a bug to me.

What sequence of commands do you need to give Jester full control of CMs?

There are two different R60s? Learn something new every day! I was sure I saw the banned weapons in the list, but I guess I was seeing the R-13M not the M1. Damn all these sub-versions! Good to know I can't get it wrong though! Other servers let you pick them, then kick you when you take off.
