  1. What are some of the issues that need attention? I don't like how it starts instantly. Hit the start button and the engine is instantly running. Thing starts easier than a Honda generator. I enjoy flying the yak around, it's a very fun plane...so overall I'm happy with it.
  2. Yup...I just did it again....265-270mph indicated on the gauge. MP of 55", prop full forward, engine really hot but didn't blow, oil and coolant doors on auto. The mission starts a bit over 30k so it is a bit downhill and maybe that's why I'm getting that speed, but it's maintaining that speed long after leveling out. I leave the bombers and my wing way behind. I am jettisoning the wing tanks also. Maybe I just have a really good engine in my copy of DCS? :) I'd like to be able to play that mission longer, my FPS goes to single digits once the Germans engage the bombers.
  3. You're not at full throttle, in your pics that's maybe 60-70%. When you're at full throttle the altimeter will be blocked by the throttle control. I just ran the mission again. At 30,000ft (what you're at in your pic) with full throttle and prop full forward (30 on rpm gauge) I get 270mph indicated and 55" MP.
  4. I've just started using the 190 in multiplayer on burning skies. Lots of fun. But I have a really hard time keeping track of targets during dog fights. I don't have track or VR, just using the hat switch on my cheapo logitech extreme 3d pro. My dogfights usually go something like - see the enemy, head on pass, lose sight of them, never see them again. I just maneuver blindly trying to find them and maybe get lucky or usually get shot down. With the 190 I've started to simply run away if I lose sight, which works but kinda chicken huh. Most of the few kills I have were ones where they never saw me, I got into position and hit them before they knew I was there. So is playing without some sort of head tracking, or VR a huge disadvantage in MP? Another thing....what's up with ppl doing a quick dive when you sneak up on them from behind and hit them? I see this regularly now, get up behind them, pull the trigger, not land enough rounds to take them out and the instant they see the tracers or hear the hits I think they push the stick hard forward. I lose sight of them under the nose and usually never see them again....so it works....just kinda curious if that's a tactic ppl use or just coincidence I've seen it happening recently. ...anyways...gonna get online and see if I can win a few right now.
  5. Yup, booster coil. Pretty cool stuff. Engine will run with mags off, as long as the starter switch is held. The engine timing from the booster coil is retarded so you'll have low power....and probably kill the starter pretty quickly if you tried it on a real engine. The booster coil supplies spark during cranking to get the engine started. The RPM of the engine during cranking is too low for the mags to generate a spark so the booster coil provides the initial spark needed for ignition. The booster coil is powered from the battery, thru the starter switch. The distributor rotor has two "fingers", the trailing finger is connected to the booster coil. It's behind the primary finger so the spark is retarded, I can't find this spec, but I'd guess it's at or very near TDC. I'd really like to see a pic of a distributor rotor with this arrangement, if anyone has one. Here's a great little article that explains how a booster coil works. http://www.flight-mechanic.com/the-fadec-system-booster-coil/
  6. Interesting stuff about the navigation. I have a question.... During startup, why does the engine sputter with the mags OFF? It won't run, of course, but it will sputter which means ignition...which shouldn't happen with no spark? Bug? Or could it be this low octane fuel you guys talk about??? (joking about the fuel)
  7. Yes, it's very nice! Those fake reflections were a real immersion killer. I'm loving the redone mustang in the beta. Plus I'm getting a big jump in FPS. From mid 50's to mid 70's and stuttering gone. Not sure why, but I'll take it. There's a thread for the spit, apparently it now has the baked on reflections??? Why oh why?
  8. Thanks for the response, good to know I'm not crazy for not noticing a difference. I'm thinking of jumping on the Beta wagon myself.
  9. How do I know if I have the updated version? I jumped in the mustang yesterday and I'm not seeing any difference. I was just thinking the changes were subtle, but you guys make it sound like that's not the case at all. I am new to the game so maybe I just haven't been flying the mustang long enough to notice what changed? I also have the 109 and 190 but haven't checked the 109 yet, and haven't even used the 190 since purchasing. Also, what are "Mipmaps in the cockpit for the instruments"?
  10. Please forgive my ignorance....I'm new here. What does "pushed the latest Open Beta" mean? Pushed = Installed? So by not installing the beta I'm simply running the last version, but it will auto update to the current beta soon.....and then a new beta will come up? If I decide to install the beta and have problems can I go back to the last regular version? I'm assuming having to reinstall all the modules I've bought?
  11. Thanks man....this is the first game I've had that was download only version. Last time I was buying games they came from the store in a box with printed material.
  12. Yes, but if I buy a microwave the manual is in the box. When I downloaded and installed DCS I saw no mention of there being a manual, where to find it, nothing. I looked in the FAQ and no mention of there being a manual there. So if you don't know to go digging around in the game files, how do you know? I asked a few players online and they told me there are no manuals or instructions of any kind....so I'm not the only one who doesn't/didn't know how to access them.
  13. Thanks....I found the hidden DOC folders and was jumping back on to reply....but you guys are quick with help....thanks! I copied and pasted copies of all 7 of my purchased planes in an easy to access folder. Maybe I missed it, but I didn't see any mention of there being any sort of instructions or mention of flight manuals anywhere in the game?
  14. Where are the DCS aircraft manuals? I've seen reference to them here on the forums and in videos on the tube. So they must exist?
  15. The real deal. Plus, @ 7:40 RIP A version in HD...
  16. Wow.....that really took me back to the real life demos from when I was a kid! Tears came to my eyes! We'll probably never see an F-14 in the sky for real again, but this is pretty darn close.
  17. Thanks for the info so far guys! I'm gonna get Discord. I played online for the first time last night. In a free play no weapons group. Had fun flying out to the carrier and landing on it in the P51. HA! Even picked up a few other guys in P51s and we did some formation flying and landing on the carrier. What a blast. But, not being able to talk is a huge limitation. Trying to fly formation and type text on the keyboard.....not gonna work. So a headset is next on my list. They have full motion chair rigs???.....holy crud. I bet that and VR and you're there. This will be the next best thing to a reality that can't exist. NONE of us will ever get to fly a real F-14, most of us will never fly a P51, or Mig-15, so this is it....I think it's gonna be a pretty awesome time to be into sims! I used FS2004 a lot while working on my instrument rating. Being able to fly the actual approaches using the same GPS we had in the real plane was a HUGE advantage. I nailed the check ride because I knew it so well. The examiner said it was by far the best check ride he had ever had, and my instructor couldn't believe how impressed he was. This examiner didn't blow smoke, he was a very serious old man. My instructor at the time was a younger guy so he was into the sims, but I remember a few older instructors that thought sims were BS. They laughed at my instructor and I spending hours on my laptop "flying" all the approaches and holds...but I shut them up. But FS2004 was nothing compared to the realism in this sim now......or maybe immersion is the better word. FS2004 was dead on for the IFR stuff. It just didn't feel like being in a real plane. But I get little moments of that "feeling" while playing DCS. Add a full chair and VR....sheese....gonna be amazing!
  18. Yes, right now I'm more into the WWII planes. I will be getting the A10 once I have a better controller setup and of course I'll be buying the F-14.....I was 7 when Top Gun came out, so that outta be enough explanation for that. I've read many posts from ppl having trouble controlling the old warbirds. Playing sims forever definitely helps. I also hold, or held, single and multi commercial license with instrument. Though haven't flown PIC since 2006ish. Cost too much personal and I didn't really enjoy flying as a job, I flew pipeline (as a right seat "observer" we called it, but I was on the controls a lot, 182rg) for a few years and it was making me not enjoy flying. So I quit and got a real job. I plan to get back into flying for real after the kids are thru college and moved out. In something fun like a Vans or Pitts. Not another high wing Cessna. To me a high wing cessna was like flying a minivan. I have a few hours in a champ, was working towards my tail wheel endorsement, but ran outta money. Have been lucky enough to get rides in a stearman, T6 and Nanchang. Tandem is where it's at for me. But for now this sim is so dang real, I'm into it! I can see myself going VR in the future. I'd love to try it. But that will require a dedicated computer and space for it. I don't think the wife would appreciate the family computer tethered to a flight seat and HOTAS. She's already uneasy about this new 27" monitor I parked on the desk. What do I need to be able to chat during multiplayer? A decent headset? I need to get that going then try to find some ppl to start flying with. The way it's going, these "games" and VR might be so good in 10 yrs I may not even need a real plane by then.....hmmmmm.
  19. Hello all...I was browsing youtube last month and a video for the upcoming F14 came up, watched that and was blown away. I've been out of the flight sim scene for a good 10+years but before that played solid from the mid 80's on. My grandpa had a Commodore 64 with Solo Flight and I played that for entire weekends when they'd let me stay. That droning sound from the game still fresh in my memory. I still have all the Jane's games from the 90's, I think just about every MS flight sim, plus combat simulators, the original IL2.....Dynamix - Aces over Europe (who remembers that one), and others I'm forgetting the titles to. I think FSX was the last sim I played until now and DCS. What a leap! So after seeing the F-14 video and finding out that DCS is free I immediately downloaded it. Oh ya, good stuff. I played around with the TF-51 for a bit and when the 1/2 price sale came up I was ready! I got Normandy + assets, The real P-51, Spitfire, 109, 190, Mig15, F86, L-39 plus Charnwood for the Mustang, Big show and Epsom for the spit. I haven't started the campaigns yet. I've only flown the Mustang, 109 and Mig15 so far. Maybe playing flight sims for 20 years helped, I've had no problems with the WWII planes. First flight in the 109 I took off, flew around, made a few touch-n-goes and then a full stop without bending the plane. Only got sketchy on the first roll out, I almost lost it there! I've made sure I'm on sim and not the game setting. No assist on. I'm using my crappy Extreme 3d Pro from the early 2000s. The rudder (twist) was pretty twitchy, but added in some curves and a deadzone and now we all good. Planning to upgrade my controller situation after my wallet recovers from all the modules I just bought, plus the new GPU, PSU and 27" monitor....whoops. Free game huh? I'd like a TrackIR ASAP as well. I've been doing the 1vs1 Mustang vs the 109. I can defeat the Mustang consistently now. Multiplayer here I came.....I'm mostly interested in playing WWII dogfighting so hopefully I can find other players sometime. I've looked at the servers and haven't seen anyone playing on a Normandy map yet. Sorry for the long first post...I'll try to keep that under control next time.
