Review Can't try in VR until my actual plane gets in tonight. However we have reason to think it won't be any different from fholgers implementation, with two fewer degrees of freedom. Which is good, to the extent it'll reduce some of the drama involved getting 6700xt working with the G2. Potentially helpful for 6800 or 6900 as well depending on how you like to roll. Maybe I can get my shadows back, or fly in Marianas without puking eh. Speaking of which, 6700xt is currently available and priced below $800 US on Newegg. Hopefully it works. Article is worth reading regardless.

I think the first task for a new user is to get the durn thing running. I'd turn everything off or down to minimum in DCS settings, set steam general 100%, per-app 100%, pd 1.0 and take her for a spin. Tune from there using fpsVR. Bottom line, you should be able to run at full resolution, high textures, high vis range, trees to match, AF 16. Possibly shadows. Dont count on getting any MSAA. Everything below MSAA is off. Note full resolution is 100% Dont be sad, the G2 at native is glorious to behold. Don't need no stinking eye candy. All that flickering and gagging when you boot up DCS or start a mission is normal. Don't give yourself a seizure. Once you're in the cockpit it should be smooth but you have to restart DCs about every third mission, and clean out your shader files now and every time you update to keep it that way

This has been a source of friendly debate, but, I'd suggest setting steam to 100, pd 1.0 and let FSR do the work. If you do that, with a scale factor of 0.77, your DCS frame size should be about 60% of native, which should give you some headroom (you're at 90% now). Performance is a function of DCS frame size, which is (3100*3100) * (steam general %) * (per app %) * pd^2 * ScaleFactor^2 Suffice to say -- the more of those terms you set to "1" or "100%" the easier it is to not get totally lost

Reshade 6.0 gets native support for OpenXr
DeltaMike replied to speed-of-heat's topic in Virtual Reality
Reshade 5.0.2 has its own installer. You just have to point it to DCS. Figure out where you installed DCS, look under "bin" and you'll find the executable there. Make sure you have write permissions in that folder. As part of the setup process you'll have the option to install vrtk. Easiest and most fun option is to install everything. Among other things, reshade will give you an icon on your steam VR console. That's the only way to make it work in VR. All your effects will be listed in the reshade "settings.". Scroll down to the bottom, VRTK should be there. Check that and check "performance mode" to activate the effect. Uncheck performance mode to tweak the effect. When you're done, hit "performance mode" again to turn it back on. Hot keys don't seem to be working in VR at the moment so it's a little cumbersome. You can re-run the setup program to modify or delete reshade. You want a backup of your ini file in case a DCS update requires re-install. If you want to move the whole operation over to your mod manager, read the instructions for "manual uninstall" for your list of files and folders. It really is that easy. -
This would drive the wife, and the cat bonkers. I should try it.

For the record I agree with edmuss here. FSR in ultra mode (0.77) with high textures is gonna look pretty awesome.

G2, supersampling, MSAA performance face-off
DeltaMike replied to DeltaMike's topic in Virtual Reality
Yeah. See TEDs 3080 vs 6900xt thread. Most of em don't do anything. In VR at least. Interested to see what the future holds for hardware based scaling. -
3080 can (barely) run the G2 at native resolution. Which is fine. Computer equipment is always an investment in the past.

G2, supersampling, MSAA performance face-off
DeltaMike replied to DeltaMike's topic in Virtual Reality
G2 definitely gives you a hard image, and it's expensive to soften it up. Both in terms of GPU time and playability. FXAA looks pretty good to me but I like it sharp and can ignore a lot of shimmering. For my next test I'm gonna take a closer look at DLAA, comparing that to VR Toolkit. I'm generally skeptical of TAA in VR, our frames are too slow and the camera is wiggling around too much, I think. But, it's intriguing. If you like a soft image, it's like downy soft. -
Yeah you still have a leak somewhere. Post up a screen shot of your DCS settings and get some data from fpsVR. Also hit up Speed-of-Heat, he wrote the book on tuning the 3090

You associate it with DCS. Figure out where you installed DCS, look for the "bin" folder and drop it in there. Im using a mod manager which allows me to flip back and forth, and easily reinstall after updates. FSR does have a modest cost. I'd only consider it if you find yourself wanting to run steam at 80% or less. One thing at a time. First figure out if you want to under sample. Then figure out the best way to do it. You've already decided to lower resolution. Question before us is, is it better to run at native with low quality textures, or undersample to allow for high quality textures? I imagine it's a close call but worth considering imo. Developers put a ton of work in to aircraft textures. Good for another couple of days gawking at stuff in VR. Have you seen the free A4E module? Amazing work. Gorgeous in VR. I'd also try cranking up the AF a bit. Improves runway appearance considerably. You'll spend a fair amount of time staring at those.

Got $30? I know some scary good pilots who started there. Want something you'll never outgrow? VKB also has a warbird model -- for even less -- that'll go well with xplane. They have a compete ecosystem of components. Button boxes, throttle quadrants. With a legit military style hotas on the way. All modular so you can ease your way in. Make no mistake -- their pro equipment is among the best of the best. Their beginner stuff is pretty much the deal of the millennium. Agree, T16000 is surprisingly good. That's how I got started. Regardless. You need a stick. Start with one that has a throttle slider.

Dying to try it. Probably this weekend.

Reshade 6.0 gets native support for OpenXr
DeltaMike replied to speed-of-heat's topic in Virtual Reality
I use it by itself, from within the reshade framework. Looks ok with default settings, when i get home in a few days I'll share mine -
Depends on your priorities. 100% gives you the best spotting distance. Although 90% is really close and if that allows you a smoother experience or allows for the eye candy you want, go for it. In your case it's an important question. Consider trying 80 or 90% with textures set to high and AF cranked up. You might notice an improvement overall. Let me know, I'm interested to know what you find. I'm not a huge fan of undersampling specifically to add in MSAA, granted it can look nice, especially if you're running FSR, but in my testing it cuts spotting distance in half. Of course you could always turn labels on. We all play DCS in accordance with our own particular... Uhhhh....

About a year ago some windows engineers came out and admitted the handoff from svr to WMR is a bottleneck. You can mitigate that somewhat by disabling virtual monitors, which seems to be default behavior now, but still. Known problem.

G2, supersampling, MSAA performance face-off

Ye gods My suggestion would be at least try FXAA. -
Wow! You're running at 100%? That's frickin awesome bossman. Now I see why you don't have enough overhead to run af or high textures lol. Which is fine. The game will never play better. You can tart it up but you can't make it play better.
-
You're doing great! You'd probably be better off with high textures and a lower resolution. Also consider setting both vis range and tree visibility to medium. At this point it's worth bringing up the steamvr console with DCS running so you can check your per app settings. Steam per app resolution should be 100 and steam global resolution should be whatever you set it at. What do you have those set at right now?
-
^Agree completely. There are a bunch of things on the hardware and software side that can cause stuttering, fortunately with Intel/NVIDIA and a new G2 it's probably not hardware. Motion Vector solves a lot of the software problems, effective on several different levels. If you do decide to try 60Hz, don't rip your headset off while you're still in WMR home, that joint flickers like a bad fluorescent light. Get in to DCS and fly around a little before you decide. You get into your WMR settings using the headset icon on the Steam VR console (right hand controller, button with three lines). "Video" tab. That's about the only thing you ever go into the WMR settings for. Motion vector causes some ghosting around text. Try to ignore it. Excellent! Next?

G2, supersampling, MSAA performance face-off
DeltaMike replied to DeltaMike's topic in Virtual Reality
Today I ran through some various combinations of ReShade effects. NTTR map, on the ramp at Nellis. 100/100/1.0. Reminder: point of this thread is, let's say you can run your VR headset at a reasonable approximation of native resolution with a few milliseconds of GPU time to spare. What's the best use of that time? Today I go through some of your post-processing options for anti-aliasing, available through ReShade. Observations Baseline: heh I need some work on this map. FPS all over the place. Main thing, as usual, is to look at the GPU time delta. SMAA: Most report it costs about 1.5ms. I think it's doing something. SMAA + Curves + Lumasharpen: Looks awesome, gets me right to my personal threshold of 20ms (frames improve once you're in the air). Note how sharp the HUD is. I know that has nothing to do with AA but still. LumaSharpen is pretty awesome. HQAA: Applies at least two passes with SMAA and one of CAS with really good effect. Costs me 23% GPU-time-wise, I'd be better off with MSAA I think. Plus MSAA gives a softer image, which may be more what you're looking for. TAA + SMAA: Excellent effects on shimmering, as long as you hold your head still (some advocate it for flat screen but I don't see it for VR) SMAA + NFAA: A better anti-shimmering solution DLAA: if you must get rid of shimmering at all costs, this should be on your short list. Expensive, but it works VR Toolkit: as advertised, you get FXAA, CAS and color/contrast correction, all in one pass. As advertised, this is super efficient and deserves a close look imo. Note: if you're trying to reduce shimmering, go easy on the sharpening filters. Very easy to undo what your AA did for you. Pics: Baseline SMAA + Curves + Lumasharpen HQAA VR Toolkit -

Doesn't hurt me a bit lol! Yeah, so that works with WMR? Interesting -

FXAA and SMAA seem to be working in 5.0.2. They don't do much at default settings but they do something. If you play around with em they do more. Just messing around with FXAA or SMAA, I can get things looking eeeeehhhhh a little better on the caucasus map at a 1ms cost. Presently testing it on the NTTR map, which is a much tougher task. There's a lot of tweaking to do. VRToolkit is worth a look. A suite of basic effects that has been pre-tweaked. Color in sky Prussian blue, scarlet fleece changes hue, crimson ball sinks from view: ReShade is pretty much the bomb. -
I can't find fpsVR on the menu bar either. Maybe I should look harder. I usually start fpsVR from SteamVR home by pressing the menu button (three lines) on the RIGHT controller, to bring up the console. Hit the library icon, select "VR" and choose from that array. You might have to spend a little time with it to get it working right. If you attach the overlay to a controller, you have to rotate your wrist like you're looking at a watch. If you set it to float (which is what I do) it starts off down on the floor, but moves into field of view when I start DCS. What do you want to do next? I’d like some shadows. I’d like to be able to see farther into the distance. I would like to improve my spotting distance, so I can see what I’m shooting at. I would like to sharpen the image up so I can read my MFD’s better. The shimmering is driving me bonkers, I’d like to soften the image. I would like more color saturation. I fly off the carrier a lot, I need to be able to see the wake. I notice stuttering when I fly close to the ground, and I would like to make that go away. I want to play Beat Sabre at 100% resolution, and DCS at 80% (or something like that). Or perhaps you have a different priority. What is it? Regardless, let’s do one thing at a time. Pick one to start. Depending on what you want to do, it will be very helpful to have your average FPS and your GPU time. Also, look at the GPU time graph. It will probably be yellow, which is fine. Let us know if there is any red.
