No DCS Steam version necessary. If you go WMR then 1. don't download the latest windows update 1908 2. Update WMR to latest version 3. Download and install SteamVR for Windows Mixed Reality 4. Then start the grind to tweak your O+ for the best performance! Its very easy. There is an o+ consolidated settings thread from April that should have all the info you need to get it running great! If you do decide to go Rift S, I would also take a look at the HP reverb before clicking go. The cost difference isn't much, and the resolution is likely going to be really good. Just some food for thought...
-
@Hook47 - I use my O+ every day and haven't really had any issues at all. It works fine. You do have to use SteamVR, but the Rift S is also having its own special issues...
-
ugh, thats a tough one... I like Sabastian, but him getting to the point is like a blind dog looking for a bone. He finds it 'eventually'... Not sure I can take watching another rambling video.
-
:megalol: That was worth reading this thread... Especially the "I don't test for bugs" part!
-
Congrats guys! Fingers crossed the amazon delivery guy shows up early in the day for you!

VR is incredible and I don't think either headset will disappoint with your setup. I agree with Harlikwin - I think the Rift S might be a bit better overall from an experience perspective, but is still going through some 'new to the market' pain. The o+ is a known quantity, and for the price, is very good. The two minor challenges are WMR (some very minor tracking issues), and the Anti SDE screen does kill SDE, but the cost is things can look fuzzy at a distance. The cockpit is very readable though.
-
@Voight - Ya I saw that with CMDR Exigeous or whatever his name is.... I tried 60hz on my O+ and the panels flickered bad and were MUCH dimmer, so no go on my headset. I guess we have to wait and see :)
-
@Harlikwin AND 9Echo - Actually nevermind. I'll do more searching and see what I find.
-
@imacken AND PT - thank you for the clarification. That is giving me great hope that the reverb will play much better than I originally thought.
-
Ok - I think I get it now... So it looks like this (1440*PD)*(1600*PD)*2 for the o+ So with a PD of 1.5 - you end up with ~10.3m pixels for the o+ Reverb at 1.0 will be ~9.3m pixels which could perform better with better resolution. Here's to hoping the reverb will look better at 1.0 PD :)
-
@PT - I think what you are saying with the post link is that additional SS is happening in SteamVR? My assumption is that I would set the SS in Steam to 100% and change PD in DCS. Is one better than the other?
-
Sorry guys - I wasn't clear O+ 1440*1600*2 (for both eyes together) = ~4.6M pixels 1440*1600*2*1.3 (adding PD uptick) = ~5.9M pixels 1440*1600*2*1.5 (adding PD uptick) = ~6.9M pixels Reverb 2160*2160*2*1=~9.3m pixels Is the formula right? Its what I've seen so far so I may still have something off.
-
I should have posted this before hehe
-
@Voight - You said 60hz on WMR, but I run 90 on my O+ now. Do you mean 60 because of the Reverb resolution? Or because WMR won't support 90? The latter is untrue...
-
If you can hold out til July, you should have a good set of reviews on here. I know several have preordered both the Index and Reverb. Since you are not new to VR and have a top end system, I personally don't think the rift s would satisfy. I know it wouldn't for me. Not hatin on it - I know some love it, but I find I like integrated sound solutions and would probably want a higher resolution... YMMV.
-
Ok - I have a 2080ti card with an o+. I have tested MSAA 2x + MFAA with a PD up to 1.5 @ 90hz (60 is too dim for me with LOTS o flicker) with Steam Motion Repro on and have reasonable performance in crowded areas (think Sochi in Caucasus @ a mostly consistent 45fps). My typical setting is same with PD at 1.3 and that gives pretty good results including heavy maps with lots of action. At 1.3 PD setting level, my card must render 5.9M pixels. At 1.5 PD, 6.9M pixels. With the Reverb set to PD 1.0 everywhere, the card will need to render 9.3M pixels. That is over 1/3 more pixels per frame! Not sure how the aliasing will be, but if I need some AA, I'm not sure I will be able to use MSAA and not have a slideshow on my hands. I may have to resort back FXAA with Anisotropic filtering and possibly SMAA to get reduced shimmer. I'll probably have to subsample (pd to <1) to get the game playable UNLESS the holy grail of updates comes this week with the 2.5.5 map optimization in Caucasus and PG maps and we truly see a 50% performance gain. At this point, its finger crossing time...

So pimax will announce a 4K by 4K headset this year. 8k x I think. I don’t think it will be cheap or perform given that is a lot of pixels to drive. They are teying to push it over display port 1.4. I think It will be a dud but I give them some props for trying to push the market further. I should be receiving an hp Reverb and an index around the same time. Will try to offer a comparison.
-
@icebeat - that is a great suggestion. Unfortunately I already pre-ordered the full index kit on 5/1 so both headsets will be inbound in June. That could be helpful for others though... That does beg a question - will you get full tracking with just one lighthouse? I know any BFM I've gotten into that I crane my head around quite a bit. Not sure if one LH will allow checking six without hiccups or glitches. Does anyone have experience with only one LH? So now my new conundrum - which headset to sell... Better figure it quick or June will be a raman kind of month! Though I prolly won't eat much anyway if the VR improvements hit for real next week. I think it may have to be my trusty o+...
-
Ok - so my solve for this conundrum was to order a reverb and keep my index preorder hahaha. Will report back what I find when I get them in.
-
@PT - yup, I agree. Reverb res on steam would make this an easy decision. I think that is what is frustrating me the most, that the decision isn't clear, and each hmd represents a serious compromise. The index in price (I don't have lighthouses) and finding a reasonable place to put the LHs vs the Reverbs high clarity and WMR shortcomings. For me, I am only playing DCS in VR now, but I do want to try some other games. The question I haven't been able to answer is, how much will I play room scale? The o+ I have isn't very good for room scale today so I've been waiting to see the index come in to really try it.
-
Lots of folks will be going to the reverb for sure. I have an index on order and I want to try that directly before making the final decision on reverb or index. The tough decision for me is - continue with WMR which is painful, or setup the index lighthouses, which is also painful, albeit briefly so. While many will say its all about resolution, I have to wonder if that really will translate in the sim. I can read my cockpit now. What I want is to be able to spot better and actually IFF planes that I merge with. I may have to order a reverb to try while I wait for the index and just return or sell the one I don't choose. UGH!

@sohei - I hope you're right and they are holding back. I suspect its that they have expended the low hanging fruit for big performance gains and are now into the high complexity, high cost realm to push the performance modestly further. I know there is more in the 'tech bag' to get better performance, but I think those companies are seeing the market splutter and step back from the technology they have on the market at a high cost today. Oh there are, no doubt, those who would pay more, but I don't think its the mainstream, or a large enough market to make the economics viable for them. Also, is the market robust enough for the next gen cards to be 40% higher in cost, for a paltry 20% gain in performance? Hopefully I am completely wrong and we'll see the next card be 40% higher performance for the same price as the current top of the line cards in the next year.
-
From what I've read - the SS in Steam and PD in DCS are two sides of the same coin. They both super sample what goes to the HMD. Not sure if one is better than the other, but I use the PD in DCS rather than Steamvr SS. PD = 1.3 SteamVR SS = 100% I have yet to see changing either or both of those up or down and giving me better visuals or better performance without compromising visuals.

@dawgie79 - updated start post @mhe - I hope you are right and the VR optimizations come and make some of our current impossible choices, more… well... possible hehe I think what you buy today will likely be good for about 18mo - 2 years. The pace at which truly new and much better GPUs seems to be slowing a bit. Not sure if that is because of software or hardware limits. I also agree 2080 cards are expensive, but so are the 1080 cards now. The difference is maybe ~$150.

@Fri13 - Totally agree that Foveated Rendering is the next big breakthrough. They have working capability today with Star VR One. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SAKgmRB7o4E
