I'd like to just get to the part where I have them in hand and can make my own assessment! No offence to anyone here, but this is all very subjective, and what I am willing to accept in performance and image quality may be very different from others.

Thanks for the response FF. I'll get the fpsVR and see what else I can see. I think you may be right - the card knows it won't make 90hz so it jumps down and idles while using the repro. Did a bit more testing in the same mission, I can get 70-90 FPS in that mission without repro on. I think repro in Auto will kick in if there is even the slightest whiff the frames will not stay above 60 hehe. I'll test a bit more tonight with MSI and possibly fpsVR on to see what is going on. And for those who want WMR native, I'd agree with Seconda - things are pretty stable with SteamVR right now. I kinda don't want that to go away...

@Alec DeLorean - I think the one x factor here is not the Index but DCS. I see your settings and have used similar but have still had many issues getting a stutter free experience with my O+, which has the same resolution (albeit OLED not RGB Stripe). Using the SteamVR for WMR motion reprojection indicator, I am constantly seeing both the CPU and GPU bound lights on regardless of where I am flying, even though MSI shows the CPU and GPU not over 50%. Overall I average 45FPS with the beefy hardware I have, but suspect the rendering engine is the culprit. I fully admit it also could be WMR so my fingers are crossed that the Index (being native steam) gives a better experience that way.

@FearlessFrog - I have MFAA on and that I do see from Nvidia CP. FXAA is more subtle. I see a minor change but its almost imperceptible. The only thing I've found to make aliasing better is either MSAA or turn up the supersampling in SteamVR/PD in DCS.

@svsmokey - there are times when I wonder if I should just stick with the o+ for sure. The world isn't too bad :)

Quick question to the august body on this thread - I've been messing around tonight since I hopefully will get the reverb in the next week or two. Doing some basic testing with Motion repro in auto, SS at 180%, MSAA off, PD 1.0 and all my textures low except water at medium. The indicator shows I am constantly CPU bound, or GPU bound, but running MSI in the background is shows that is not the case. CPU running at ~50% and GPU ~50%. Both temps are in the low 60s, and I am not seeing issues with VRAM (~7.5gb of 11) or RAM (~16GB of 32). This is using the default BFM mission against the Mig29. Nothing else around for miles except the one plane. I get very sporadic 90fps when I first start the mission, then repro kicks in and pretty much stays on with the indicator showing CPU or GPU bound with both on the most of the time. I'm on 2.5.5 on Win10 1809. I get that I may still be GPU or CPU bound with both being used up to 80% but there is quite a bit of headroom left assuming 80% would likely be the cutoff. Oh and looking at each core, I am only using ~25-40% on each core at different times, so I am not seeing one core spike to a high number. Any thoughts on why this isn't utilizing my GPU and CPU more? I'm wondering if something else broke with 2.5.5...

Honestly, I am not surprised with AureliusAugustus' review of the Index FOR DCS. I don't expect the Index to be light years better than the o+ or even the Rift S for visuals in DCS because the rendering engine needs optimization, and we need better GPU options to drive the kind of pixels needed to make it look as good as possible IN DCS. I think the reviewers are really referring to their experience with other games that aren't DCS and I'm sure will also look great in the index.

@FearlessFrog - FXAA is possible through the NVidia control panel. I left it off with the o+ because the Anti SDE caused fuzzy distance to begin with. It may work better with the Reverb. I already turn on MFAA in the Nvidia CP.

@pimp - if you mean the wake turbulence box, then it does enable wake turbulence behind aircraft in SP at least. Where was this confirmed?

These symbols coincide to radar signatures on your RWR. They give you a HUD representation of the general direction of the radar that is active. Top of the hud is in front of you, bottom is behind. Hope that's clear.

Odssesy + When I start DCS, the menu is behind me and on the ground
Nagilem replied to KungFu's topic in Virtual Reality
I chose to move the supersampling to SteamVR so my PD is 1.0 but my SteamVR SS is 180%. I use the reprojection and MSAAx2 and get a smooth experience... https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/mixed-reality/enthusiast-guide/using-steamvr-with-windows-mixed-reality#enabling-motion-reprojection-for-steamvr-apps -
@etherbattx - uh, ya. by a lot hahaha. MS wants you to pay like the dang thing is made out of gold!

Odssesy + When I start DCS, the menu is behind me and on the ground

Ah I got ya - With an index inbound I'm about to have that same problem. Been using DCS exclusively so far but will expand when the new HMD arrives. -

@kung fu - Are you using a hotas? I have discord PTT mapped to one of my buttons on my throttle using DirectX so I don't need any other software beyond discord to talk. -
I've only tried SP so far. Will check out MP tonight.
-
@p1t1o - man I hear ya. What we don't know is what the actual problem is that is causing the performance issue. I re read what MadMatt posted -@MadMatt thank you btw, and still really have no clue on what issue they found other than it is somewhere in how DCS renders the map data to the 3d world. With shaders and other things, it is not improbable at all to optimize and get big performance boosts on performance. I am working with another user testing out the max mission stuff and found that if you put ~600 objects flying or moving around, performance across the board tanks. If you look in my signature you will see I am running high end. Looking at the performance data nothing on my rig is maxed. CPU ~20 percent with all cores averaging >10%; GPU >40% with less than 8GB used in VRAM; Memory ~16GB used. I still averaged less than 24FPS. Bottom line, there is a lot more that can be optimized. The only question is when will it be done? :D

@supmua - waiting sux quite frankly. Still waiting for the devices I already ordered haha. @Op - I would get something now like the O+ then wait and for more reviews on what is releasing. The O+ is very good and will only set you back $300. That is what I did and I do not regret it one bit. Having something means you can make an informed choice on what is coming out since will have a more recent experience to work with.
-
Yes I mean SteamVR supersampling to 180% as a custom setting for the O+. Haven't received the reverb yet. So far, those settings have worked very well. I think DCS still has VR render pipeline issues when reprojection is turned on, so I moved the SS and reprojection to SteamVR and only turned on the post processing MSAA x2 to help with the aliasing in DCS. It might just be me, but turning up the textures, grass, and trees doesn't make enough difference for me to notice so I turned those down.

Dynamic campaign (alike) graphic test
Nagilem replied to beppe_goodoldrebel's topic in Game Performance Bugs
Ok took a look at the mission. You can see my specs in my sig. I found the following - 1. Using my VR headset, my frames never got above 24fps. 2. My GPU utilization stayed consistent at 34% - very low 3. My CPU never topped 25% 4. Only 1 core spiked above 40% for one millisecond. All cores averaged less than 10% utilization 5. Memory topped at 16GB used - the system has 32GB available. Mission was totally unplayable. FPS ranged from 10-24 FPS and was very jerky in the HMD. Yet none of my resources in MSI were tapped. -
@IanHx2 - and one other thing... What GPU, CPU and memory do you have?
-
@IanHx2 - Because there are settings settings everywhere for WMR, can you please post based on WMR Hz - 60 or 90? Experience - low, med, high, very high beta Steam VR Motion Reprojection https://steamcommunity.com/games/719950/announcements/detail/1652133167137673234 Current SteamVR custom setting - in % and res at the bottom Dev SS - on or off NVidia MFAA on or off? Power setting? Other settings of note? You said DCS PD 1.0, textures low... What about shadows? What about Trees? What about object distance? MSAA? SSAA? Not trying to be difficult, but looking for some commonality with others posts about performance.
-
@imacken - I think he means this... https://steamcommunity.com/games/719950/announcements/detail/1652133167137673234 Its what I've meant by saying SteamVR reprojection since its done in SteamVR and not WMR directly.
-
@Gripes - Tried both 315IAS and 275IAS. *Slightly* better at lower speed. KLC135MPRS is much heavier and difficult to manage than the S3, though the S3 is closer to the engine. @PeneCruz - I am finding the wake turbulence more behind the engines than the wingtip for what its worth... I am having to deflect the stick the entire time I am connected, almost as if the tanker is in a turn (which he is not). Trying it while the tanker actually is in a turn is much much harder. As you said, maybe its a matter of WIP. Sadly, with this as an option, it will be turned on in MP and left on period so its not something that I can avoid by turning off in my game. The big question is - how much does wake turb affect the real jet while tanking?
-
@P1T10 - I think your estimation may be too harsh. There are A SH*T TON of moving parts for a sim like this. I suspect they found either extra processing being done inefficiently, or realized there was a better way to render stuff. I think I remember a post about having some extra unneeded processing steps in the engine. At any rate, this is crazy complex and I for one and grateful they found some of the inefficiencies to repair. Who knows if we will get 50% - I'll take whatever they can provide in a stable fashion.
