  1. You guys are really getting all up in arms about the "balance" issue. I'm not arguing at all for any kind of balance. I'm also not saying that you should not use any advantage you can get. I'm simply saying that the overwhelming superiority of one side poses issues to game play and mission building, and its only going to get worse. (viper, strike eagle) if the solution is to just eliminate the advanced weapons from the server, well that's not much of a solution is it. Personally i think a good deal of the solution lies in more advanced modelling of air defense systems since is does not seem likely that we will ever get a redfor study sim. Sam systems in the sim are simulated on a very simplistic level and require user scripts just to be able to turn radar on and off. If the red side is not going to get modern jets then at the very least their sam systems should be modeled with a bit more complexity and closer to the actual performance. If you're all about realism then you shouldn't have any issue with that.
  2. First of all, if you think DCS accurately simulates conflict and modern weapons then you are deluded. They do about as good a job as can be expected but there are plenty of examples of tactics and weapons that are simulated poorly or not at all. Air defense systems being one example. Secondly, At the end of the day this is still a game, and you're a gamer. This thread is about how to make the game interesting and fun, with what is continuing to be the overwhelming superiority of one side.
  3. some very good points. scripting smart sams seem to be a big part of the answer. wish that was easier to do. does that tax the resources of a multiplayer server/
  4. I understand that IRL there are many ways to defend against standoff weapons like JSOW. Unfortunately most of those are not simulated in DCS. In my limited testing of JSOW's it seems that air defenses as currently modeled have little chance. They may shoot down a couple but ultimately will be overwhelmed quite quickly. JSOW is very stealthy.
  5. That's kind off what I figured would happen. I think multiplayer servers especially are going to have a difficult time. Not much fun when everybody goes blue because red has no chance. Pretty soon red will be all AI with the occasional human masochist.
  6. I'm not arguing that they are not simulated to their full potential. I'm simply saying they present large problems to interesting mission design and game play.
  7. Going to be tough to shoot down the Hornets when they can launch from so far away covered by F 14's but maybe. Do we currently have the ability to repair runways? I know AI will not take off or land on damaged runways. Not sure how long the effect lasts though.
  8. If air defenses are getting defeated by JSOW's then it falls on the mission designers to lay out better, more effective air defense My point is there aren't "more effective" air defenses currently available, especially as they are currently modeled.
  9. JSOW's will make quick work of SA 15's. Not even sure if you can defend against it with SA 10.
  10. what youre describing just takes JSOW out of the equation completely. I'm asking how you design a mission using all the toys and still make it interesting. JSOW just seems to be easy mode. A flight of Hornets with JSOW covered by Tomcats and Eagles can take out an entire airfield (or two) from halfway across the map. I'm not arguing against using your advantage as blue, I'm just saying it has the potential to be very boring after awhile. At the end of the day this is a game.

    JSOW is OP

Ok, now that we have JSOW how do you design a mission that is interesting or challenging when a couple of Hornets can destroy all your air defenses and your runways from 40 miles away with zero risk. Even on maps where red units are not visible you will be able to use the TGP/ATFLIR to locate targets with impunity. I know this is a simulator and realism is what is desired (if I were a Hornet driver IRL I would not be upset about breaking stuff from 40 miles away) but seems to me game play is going to suffer. Sorry about clickbait title....kinda:)
  12. Extremely well said. I have only been in DCS a short time but own all but 2 modules. Sometimes the frustration runs deep at the lack of focus on what is obviously broken to stoke the coal fires of the next hype train. I have learned one thing for sure though, no more early access for me. Not interested in paying top dollar for the privilege of being a beta tester.
  13. I recently upgraded my GPU from an AMD Rx480 to a GTX 1660 Ti and the flickering on the Gazelle has disappeared. I have not tried the Su 25 yet, I'll do that this evening and report back. I also have noticed the occasional flickering I was getting in a lot of other modules as well, such as the AV8b has diminished greatly as well. Strange. I will spend some more time flying in different light conditions to verify but It seems GPU related. (at least in my case)
  14. the stick has a rubber boot around the base. I put an elastic band around the boot to gather it in to the stick. It provides enough stability to center but still allows very small corrections. So much less fatiguing to fly as well. Now I can hammer into a 6g turn with just my finger tips and a small stick deflection when before required a full hand grip and lots of pressure to overcome the spring. There are some downsides though, centering is not as precise so letting go of the stick can be tricky at times. It is particularly a fantastic setup for helicopters though, I can put the Mi8 on any rooftop I choose now with no trouble and holding the huey in a hover is routine.
  15. what helped me more than anything was finally having a joystick that I could make the minute changes needed to line up and stay connected. If you are constantly fighting centering spring pressure in the stick it becomes difficult to make small changes. I had an old Logitech extreme 3d pro that i removed the spring from. Made all the difference in the world. I can now fly with just my fingertips and make very precise corrections.
  16. I just purchased a 1660 Ti and it's quite good. I am running it in 2560x1080 wide screen and I consistently get over 100 fps. Even in PG flying the F 14 with all settings on high. Coming from the 480 Rx that I replaced it is a vast improvement.
  17. If they are working on it an update would be appreciated. It is a pervasive, and in some cases, game breaking problem. A bit more communication from ED would go along way.
  18. It may have been fixed for you in the latest OB patch. Not for me. This has been a long ongoing issue that quite frankly seems no one at ED really cares about at the moment. I've given up at this point and figured it was something I am just going to have to live with.
  19. It is definitely a light/reflection thing. Noticed it last night on the F 5. The list of effected modules continues to grow for me. This is a serious issue for what seems like a growing number of players. An update would be greatly appreciated. When can we expect some sort of resolution?
  20. The flickering for me did not seem to be related to water or mirrors. It seems to be related to light reflecting off the canopy in some way. In the Su 25 when interior cockpit lights are on the flickering is greatly exaggerated. Turn the lights off and it is almost eliminated except at certain angles to the sun. The Gazelle however does seem to be the rotor blade animation as zooming in to the point of not having the rotor blades in the FOV greatly reduces the flickering.
  21. Two months or more now without a solution to this problem? Really? This has made the Gazelle ans Su25 pretty much unplayable for me. It's been a month since anyone affiliated with ED has even posted on this thread. What gives? I have not been playing DCS that long comparatively. Is this lack of support for a major bug such as this the norm?
  22. Hi guys, hoping someone can help me out here. I am encountering severe flickering in a few modules. Specifically the Su 25 (see attached track) and the Gazelle seem to be the worst. As you can see in the track it seems to correspond to turning on the interior lights. I have recently upgraded my monitor to a widescreen 2560x1080. Previously I had a standard aspect ratio 1920x1080 and did not have this problem. Any help would be appreciated. su25 flickering.trk
