I wonder what an F-14 Pilot/Rio has to say about that statement ;).

Thanks for the link. The photos and he comments relay cleared some stuff. I was wondering what are the differences in RIO cockpits between all of the F-14s models. I got especially confused about this one: I was thinking: Did they ran out of new spare parts and replace the TID with an old one? Is this an F-14B?. Anyway thanks for the link.

I think that Vandy One of the VX-4 squadron was AMRAAM capable, but I cant remember where I read about that, so in short I can't provide any proof. :(

DCS: F-14A/A+/B by Heatblur Simulations coming to DCS World!
dekiplav replied to Cobra847's topic in DCS: F-14A & B
Me to. F-14 is the fighter that I have been waiting for my whole flight sim carier. So... effective phoenix or not, more maneuverable than F-15 or not, it will be the jet I will be flying all the time when it's going to be realised. -

I think it will all depend on how much will the Aim-54C be effective against other fighters. If you spent 80% of you're time at cold start and carrier take off procedures, and then came in to a duel and get blow up in no time by an Aim-120C or an R-27ET... I think people will quickly become bored getting killed all the time and switch to an F-15C or Su-27 (this is in multiplayer only). From my online experience people tend to fly very low and in between mountain ridges, and evade Aim-120's like crazy, Aim-120's that are being launched from 10-15nm. Maybe if the fight was over the sea it would a different story :D. Anyway my online experience is pretty limited, so I could be wrong.:smilewink: -
I was wondering is there any way of installing an old Joystick that doesen't have support for Win7? It is in regard of an old AVB Top Shot Pegasus Force Feedback Joystick that I have bought a long time ago and I was very pleased with it. In fact it has proved to be better then the more expensive joysticks that can be find now days (of course not HOTAS Warthog or Logitech G940 etc... :D). The force feedback, the key layout, the rudder wheel, two hat switches... it's just fantastic and it was especially good using it with Lock On Flaming cliffs 2. But now DCS has switched to OS that must be 64 bit and I can’t use the Joystick anymore, because there are no drivers from the manufacturer. Can I ask if you can help me to somehow install the device on a 64 bit OS, or if there is a some sort of emulation software that can be used?

The thing is they don't know when is launched, just like Aim-120. F-16A gets warning on their RWR only when the missile goes active. And by then they have like 8-9 sec. to react. The missile has huge warhead, almost like a bomb, and therefore a huge blast radius. It is by no means a magic bullet but it is considered a dangerous missile. Now those rookie F-16 guys must have come up with some good tactic to slaughter those experienced F-14 guys with a 9/10 kill ratio in a BVR engagement. :music_whistling:

Did they mention how they where able to evade them (tactic used)? Because the RWR doesn't alert that an AIM-54 is being launch, the missile attacks from above, can reach very, very high speeds (above mach 4), which in return leaves very little time for reaction, has a huge warhead and you can't see the missile coming for you. This have been told to me by an actual F-14 pilot. I really wonder what is the appropriate tactic for engaging F-14 at long range, because if the Dutch pilots did this in F-16A 9/10 times, probably MiG-21 pilots can do the same (close to him) making the F-14 obsolete BVR platform.

Can anyone upload a F-14B RIO pit modified with MFD? Because I kinda mix tings up a little bit. I cant seem to find anything online. Thanks in advance!

It's not that I would mind an A-G capable F-14B, it's just that LNS are already giving us two versions of the cat, and by my opinion this is the most difficult aircraft to model to this day (swing wings, dual cockpit, RIO AI, AIm-54, etc.) To model a Bombcat they need to redesign the back cockpit which will take more time. It is true that F-14B spent 1/2 of theirs life as an multi-role strike aircraft, but I will personally always feel that the A-G missions was taken only to prolong F-14's life. It is first and foremost an fighter aircraft witch his career peak was in the 80's and early 90's. For a true muti-role strike fighter that kicks F/A-18E butt, we will need a F-14D :smilewink:.

I say ... "not a pound for air to ground" or in this case "not a minute for air to ground" :music_whistling:

From what I know the F-111B was more suited for the "Fleet Air Defense" mission than the F-14A. It could pack more fuel, loiter longer at CAP station, greater range, land with heavier payload ... This raise the question: If the NAVY wanted a fighter that could only do the FAD mission, then why chose the inferior one? I kinda doubt that they where to much concerned of pilot safety because they could not have a good look at the carrier strip during landing. From what I know F-8's where a nightmare for landing on a carrier, but that didn't stop the NAVY from using them. It would be very stupid, especially after lessons learned the hard way in Vietnam, to put a fighter even more incapable in the WVR or AS role than the F-4. So by my opinion I have to say that the F-14 was designed from the start to be a fighter plane. Maybe because it was a NAVY fighter and it also had to do the FAD mission which required caring a huge radar/missile system that sacrificed some of its WVR performance, but it was more than capable off handling the lighter Soviet fighters.

How the F-14 handles F/A-18 in WVR fight? This time the slow turning fight should go in favor to the Hornet, right?

I know :), I was joking because the F-14 vs F-15 debate started to get too complicated for the non aero-engineers to follow (charts, calculations etc.) I mean it is a good thing that is going in that direction.

Sooo .... it's settle now. Tomcat wins in horizontal, Eagle in the vertical.

Thanks!

I think that F-14 is beater than F-15 and F-16 in instantaneous turns at any altitude.:smartass:

First of all excellent post Nick. I was wondering if you like to explain a lite bit more on how the F-15 can offset the flat scissors maneuver because of the roll rate. I know the F-15 has superior roll rate, but I didn't know that the F-14's roll rate was so bad that it would actually mater. On the Air show demos that are uploaded on net, when both planes do a 180° roll in turns i can't seem to notice more than a second difference in F-15's favor. :)

I have a question about F-14's DFCS (Digital Flight Control System). Did the integration on the DFCS increase maneuverability or prevented some maneuvers to be executed in account of safety. On the net it says it make the Cat more agile. What are you're thoughts on this subject?

:) I don't know if he ran out of fuel or luck or skill, or misjudged the large apparently interceptor aircraft :D. It was a joke. I tough to my self here is a thread about F-14 maneuverability, and still no one is posting the famous Hoser and Hill Billy gun kill. :D
