Do you mean with the new sound engine, in general, we won't see a decrease in fps? that would me perfect and somewhat logic considering even cpu even with just 2 cores have a lot of spare cycles (cpus are around 50%)

Yes.

So c0ff are you working on a multicore optimised version as well as a 64bit exe that will be able to use more ram?

Yes, we are working on this.

If it were a problem, solvable by one developer, we'd already do this. But both multicore and 64-bit require deep changes in various parts of the project. And 64-bit is an easier one.

Great.

Ill stick with me 3ghz dual core for now then. Hopefully core 2 quad prices will have dropped by the time DCS multicore is released.

I'm also starting to think about holding off on an upgrade. Might stick with my E6600 Core 2 Duo at 3.2Ghz for another 6 months.

ok, lets hear it.

6 core, 12 threads, 3.3 GHz...

sometimes it drives me nuts that they down benchmark DCS blackshark, and seem to stop benchmark FSX, as much as we know how CPU intensive DCS can be...

this will be the processor i will get once A-10C comes out, or if im tempted, when LOCKON 2.0 comes out....

if anyone can run black shark with this and then tell about it... let us know!

Check out this new article at Toms Hardware regarding the new Gulftown with 6 cores and Hyper Threading: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/hyper-threading-core-i7-980x,review-31842.html

Summary: a total waste of money for DCS, flight sims or gaming. Better off with either the i5-750 or an i7-930 instead which can both be clocked happily above 3.8 to 4.2ghz.

Most discrete soundcards workloads nowadays, (since the DX changes in Vista), are in post processing, (x-fi crystalliser, etc). So, no, you don’t need one, but yes, you may get better sound output with one.

That all depends on your setup though. Feeble speakers will give feeble sound no matter what hardware you throw at them. With DCS & FC being flight sims though, (and this is not a criticism), sound quality is not top of the agenda as most are drowned out by the engines.

If it was an orchestra simulator……..

Talking about software / hardware sound rendering is mostly moot nowadays anyway with the advent of multicore CPU & aware OS (Vista & 7). You are simply not going to saturate a C2D upward class CPU with software sound rendering. The benefits in the case of CPU cycles was old-school, (I remember thinking “wow” when adding a creative SoundBlaster to my AMD K62).

Heh. O/C for FC2.0 as it will only use 2 cores. well, at least YOUR OTHER 10 (physical & Ht), will be able to keep windows busy.

STANDING BY

Standing by is exactly what this CPU will be doing with FC2. It's going to be saying, "when are you actually going to give me any work to do?"

Seriously though I hope you are going to benchmark the hell out of it and see how high it goes. Post some screenies of your results for the mortals here who could only dream of having such a beast in their rig. :)
