Mig-21, Pop Up bombing on the range.

Trying out my new weapons range, loosely based on the Air Weapons Range

(AWR) Holbeach Lincolnshire. Mig-21 with bombs, rockets and clusters used on the tank targets.

I change this every time I use it, but here are the basics.

At this speed, 530 kts and altitude 955 ft, the pipper is just out of sight, so I used the tip of the nose to pickle. If you either increase the speed to around 1200 kph or reduce the alt. the bomb sight will come into view. CBUs always fall short, so you need to allow for it.

S & L is the best way to spread those little tank killers.

I've made another vid with the sight in view for level bombing.

 

 

 

 

Using the dive bombing sight in level flight, to drop cluster bombs on artillery targets at the virtual Holbeach bomb range. This sight can be used from between around 500' to 1100' AGL for clusters and from 70' for retarded or 200' upwards for dumb bombs. Setup is the same as for dive bombing, (shown if you watch closely).

The RAF Holbeach range is still very active, mainly F-15, Tornado and Typhoons, but the sound of the A-10 Gau-8 I heard in 2011 is something I will never forget.

hmm i noted n both videos that your ASP mode is "MSL" not GYRO as per Chuck's guide.. but i also note in manual pg 142 suggests MSL... Looks like MSL is the way to go? ... yet manual page 133 says GYRO for all non maneuvering targets?

I use the stable MSL pipper at all times. In pop up bombing you simply don't have time for the gyro to settle down, but for level bombing GYRO might work better and compensate for the cluster bomb shortfall, which I compensate with by setting the outer ring and using that as the pip. The manual is confusing, but I used the Bunyap vid tutorial when I first tried bombing.

Edit: I've just tried GYRO on S&L and pop up attacks and both give exactly the same end result as MSL mode, so I guess they are both valid.

Try both methods and see which suits you best.

Trying to find the best weapon to kill T-90 tanks. The FAB 250 bomb is the easiest to use, so I will start with that and a high pop delivery which will make lining up easy but expose you to the AAA for longer.

I hadn't thought of using cluster bombs to destroy ships, but after a botched attack on a tank column, I carried on to try a low loft attack on a tanker, with success ( 176 hits for a kill ). This opens up new possibilities.

I prefer to use a Straight & Level attack with cluster bombs and Straight & Low Level with retarded bombs but I'll give pop up and diving attacks a go to see how they compare. What's the best ? They both had the same results.

The, offset pop up, is the thing, if you want time to spot the target on the way up and more time to line up a shot.

I love these S-24 rockets. Perfect for the Pop Up attack and easy to aim, ideal for tank destruction. For a direct pop, you need to know the exact location of the target. In this case it is a camp, which has just got on the move.
