Files inside C:\Users\<YOUR LOGIN>\Saved Games\DCS could become corrupted.

The files inside the installation directory - could not, unless you have hardware problems (or a virus).

Did you try to repair world?

If so and it worked you should note it here.

This type of issue is exactly why repair was added.

No. Repair was added for users who mess with the game files w/o doing backups.

On a normally working system (i.e. no hardware problems, and no viruses) game installation folder is never touched besides the updates.

All writes go to the Saved Games\DCS and Temp\DCS folders only.

I/O device error:

1) check your drive health

2) check permissions (though, it would be a different error message)

ok - the mp crash caused some bad sectors on my partition - i enabled the built in administrator in Win7 and was able to uninstall -

what do you recommend? Should i delete the partition and install DCS only on my administrator account? Should i delete partition and make a new one?

What are my options here to prevent this from happening again?

Bad sectors usually have two root causes:

  • Your drive is damaged/failing usually after 4-5 years constant use
  • the write back of a cached block stopped in the middel of the process, which should not happen nowadays with a journaling file system

You may not like it, but I would consider replacing the Harddrive. At least monitor the harddrive and if this kind of "error" aka bad sectors happen more often, think about a replacement.

ANYWAY, MAKE A BACKUP OF ALL IMPORTANT DATA ON THE PHYSICAL DRIVE, QUICKLY! E.G. PHOTOS, DOCUMENTS, PASSWORD SAFE FILES, ANYTHING YOU CAN'T REPLACE IF THE DRIVE DIES! :shocking:

I've seen this happen multiple times, so don't underestimate. Maybe the drive is good for some more years, maybe it dies tomorrow. You can't say for sure. You can still use it as a storage disk for "replaceable" data, or a put it in USB case as a mobile storage to move large data between PCs.
