statrekmike Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 This article seems slightly outdated but I could be wrong on that, things seem to be moving pretty quickly in regards to the proposed military budget cuts so the situation may be a bit fluid.
PFunk1606688187 Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 Ironic that the B-52, a comparatively blundering and inelegant beast in the modern warspace, will outlive both the U-2 and the A-10 despite having done little of note since playing football over Hanoi. Warning: Nothing I say is automatically correct, even if I think it is.
Bushmanni Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 B-52 is one of the most cost effective bomb trucks the USAF has for delivering smart bombs in Afghanistan and similar places. PLP Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 https://medium.com/war-is-boring/4ef05200dd79 "As with previous attempts to retire A-10s and U-2s, the current proposals are subject to Congressional approval. And getting lawmakers to sign off on the cuts could be easier said than done." So it's not over just yet I suppose. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Krunkskimo Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 cutting platforms means cutting jobs in these guys districts so you're hard pressed to retire anything these days. on a separate note, when will these upgrades be implemented into DCS -D
Exorcet Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 Ironic that the B-52, a comparatively blundering and inelegant beast in the modern warspace, will outlive both the U-2 and the A-10 despite having done little of note since playing football over Hanoi. I see the B-52 as a more general purpose aircraft than the A-10, though like the A-10 flying its original role may be a bit too risky. It's a cruise missile boat and the idea of using it as a standoff jammer might be revisited in the future. The U-2 it makes sense to replace in some cases because UAV's can take its role without being limited by the pilot. I've actually done some work looking into potential U-2 replacement concepts (it was one of my senior college classes), and some of the surveillance equipment the air force wants to use, the U-2 can't carry. It's too bad there is no money for all these aircraft as the A-10 definitely has a niche role to fill. Outside of that niche, there isn't much else it can do though.
