Bulgarian Airforce

Ha Kusch, the last one is from the 6th Balchik airbase at the Black Sea, I served part of my military service near by. The pic is old though- the base was closed as active in 1998.

BTW, there's interesting discussion going on in bulgarian aviation community now. As the 29's are being restored as airworthy (after extending their TBO to 4000 hrs and service life to 40 years) now one by one they are re-entering active service, some of them after spending 12-15 years on the ground, like the one flown yesterday after 12 yrs grounding with the classic number '29'. So this plane will be renumbered to '39' because of a MiG-21UM that shares the same number and flies at the same base. So people say- isn't it the 29 with the highest priority to pay so much attention to the 21, especially a trainer? A lot of moves of our DoD don't make any sense...

Wow, 12-15 years of storage? That is a long time. Does anyone know how does that affect the airframe if at all? I know that vintage restore aircraft (1920 to 1960) spend a lot of time in storage but I have never heard of a modern fighter in storage for that long that it is now flying. Just curious of the steps taken to re qualify the airframe after such a long storage time. Sorry I hope I'm not to far off topic as I always am.

To whom it may concern,

I am an idiot, unfortunately for the world, I have a internet connection and a fondness for beer....apologies for that.

Thank you for you patience.

It's not that long if you perform the proper maintenance. The planes have been stored in their regular arc concrete shelters (exactly like the ones we have in LO) with their engines and systems (oil, hudraulic, fuel) fully preserved. This is performed periodically (usualy every six months), depreservation-preservation and once per year engines full ground run. And now when there's a will to keep the planes in service russian specialists from the MiG company have come to make full evaluation of their airframes and components to extend their service life. They have been amazed of the good condition of the planes, some of them after spending 15 years on the ground- no corrosion, no even paint distortion. The weather in Bulgaria also helps this, we have relatively low hummidity. Also the first two planes, subject of the extension contract have been first flown by MiG test pilots, including full burner vertical take-off and climb to 10000m then leveling and acceleration to Mach 2. I read some interviews of these test-pilots- they claim that the planes they've flown have better performance (with overhauled engines) than later produced and active flying 29s.

This is something I learnt in my career- there are no new and old aircraft, there are just well and poor maintained aircraft.

15 and 24 taking-off from Sofia Intl Airport at 11th June with payload of 4xR-73s. They were deployed there to perform GAI for the visit of the US president. On the background you can see one of the (former) An-26's of my company

Wow, I never thought it'd happen! MiGs protecting head of Uncle Sam. Croatian Fisbeds also flew sorties over Zagreb in order to protect AF1 stationed at Pleso AB during last friday and saturday.

Tell me please, that An-26 in the background is an airliner, right?!

In the same vein as the MiGs protecting AF1 and the US president, who would have thought you would ever see MiG-29s and F-15s along side each other at the same AFB? Neat stuff!

Hi there! Nice pics!

This year Hungary will hold an airshow in August. Bulgaria was invited, and replied posivtively with Frogfoots (as far as it was posted in the event's webpage) But now, Bulgaria is completely removed from the list. Is there anyone from "inside" who can inform us about this sad news? :(

For the last two weeks the sky over south of Bulgaria has been disturbed by the roar of a whole fighter army- 10 F-16C from USAF 93rd FW "Makos" Florida flown by very experienced pilots is visiting 3rd Graff Ignatievo AFB where they've played multiple training engagement versus 8 MiG-21s and 10 MiG-29s of the Bulgarian AF- mostly 1v1 doggifht and 2v2 BVR tactical engagement, "Mako Javellin 2008". Both sides are satisfied of the outcome of these intensive flights. Photos by Anton "HORNISE" Balakchiev:

During this week took place tha anual real missiles launch exercises of the Bulgarian fighter squadrons along with various SAM sites at the Shabla shooting range, northern Black Sea coast. Both MiG-21 and MiG-29 aircraft have flown, some of them by young pilots making their first real launches of R-60 missiles (both fighters). More experienced pilots have used R-3S older IR missiles (MiG-21), R-73 and R-27R missiles (MiG-29 and MiG-29UB(only R-60 and R-73)). All launches are reported successful, some details are released only about the R-27R launches- a RC drone (RCS less than 1 sq.m.) is shot down at low altitude feet wet.
