Mike Busutil Posted February 10, 2014 Posted February 10, 2014 I was doing my startup and accidently hit my gear handle while on the ground. My wings blew off and exploded and there was fire everywhere I looked while in the cockpit. I think this damage model is a bit exaggerated... :D [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Checkout my user files here: https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/filter/user-is-Mike Busutil/apply/
Grim_Smiles Posted February 10, 2014 Posted February 10, 2014 I'm no expert, but yeah I think landing gear going up while sitting in the hangar would not result in exploding wings and massive flames bigger than a person shooting out. Sure she'd be damaged, but I don't think we'd see what the screenshot shows. =Mac= Posted February 10, 2014 Posted February 10, 2014 Modern aircraft have a "weight on wheels" safety switch that prevents landing gear from retracting while on the ground. I don't know if the P-51 had one. The Hornet is best at killing things on the ground. Now, if we could just get a GAU-8 in the nose next to the AN/APG-65, a titanium tub around the pilot, and a couple of J-58 engines in the tail...

NoCarrier Posted February 10, 2014 Posted February 10, 2014 P-51D model does not... Exactly right! Earlier P-51 models had one, but North American took it out to save weight for the P-51D and up. :smartass:

mr_mojo97 Posted February 10, 2014 Posted February 10, 2014 So is there actually enough power in the hydraulic rams to to raise the undercarriage while the P-51D has full weight-on-wheels? cichlidfan Posted February 10, 2014 Posted February 10, 2014 So is there actually enough power in the hydraulic rams to to raise the undercarriage while the P-51D has full weight-on-wheels? That, I would find difficult to believe. It is possible, perhaps, but I rather doubt it. VH-Rock Posted February 10, 2014 Posted February 10, 2014 Hi Guys, Perhaps I can shed some light on this situation. Over the past year, I've been lucky enough to get in 3 P-51s. When entering the cockpit of Princess Elizabeth at Duxford this year, Stevo (Her pilot), reminded us to stay clear of the gear handle. He stressed that the main gear would not retract whilst on the ground, but the tail would. Even though it was only the tail wheel, I don't think the owner would have been too happy if we'd moved that handle! Virtual Horsemen - Right Wing (P-51) - 2008...
