Bucic Posted March 9, 2014 Posted March 9, 2014 (edited) Hi! - services - aero disable - ramdisk Services I got a bit out of touch with Windows during the past years? Does anyone have some tweaking notes handy? I'm particularly after .reg or .bat files that leave only vital windows services enabled. Anything to add to what has been said here? http://windows7themes.net/windows-7-services-safe-to-disable.html BTW, for managing services I recommend TurboServicesManager. Very small, no install, lets you save and restore services sets, so you can back up the original services set before fiddling with it. Aero Also, does it make sense to disable Windows 7 Aero for gaming e.g. on Intel HD4000? Ramdisk What is the best Windows 7 ramdisk nowadays? Freeware/payware. EDIT: I highl recmmend http://www.turboirc.com/tsm/ TurboServicesManager for managing your services. It doesn't need to be installed, allows you to BACKUP to a transparent XML file before you even start fiddling with your services, to save the state of your services configuration at any time and load them at any time. Plus display of up and down dependencies! G00dnight Posted March 9, 2014 Posted March 9, 2014 For win aero it is not always a good idea to disable it, I have found that in DCS with my setup it has a good improvement to keep it turned on. I dont use a ramdisk as I have SSD's. I use gamebooster rarely to turn off any unwanted services fully customisable. Bucic Posted March 9, 2014 Author Posted March 9, 2014 (edited) I dont use a ramdisk as I have SSD's. SSD is being bombarded by too frequent writes if you haven't disabled swap (pagefile). This is what I need ramdisk for. EDIT: Oh, it seems it's safe on Win 7+ http://www.oczforum.com/forum/content.php?306-SSD-ABC-Guide Still, I have 8 GB of RAM... EtherealN Posted March 9, 2014 Posted March 9, 2014 SSD is being bombarded by too frequent writes if you haven't disabled swap (pagefile). This is what I need ramdisk for. EDIT: Oh, it seems it's safe on Win 7+ http://www.oczforum.com/forum/content.php?306-SSD-ABC-Guide Still, I have 8 GB of RAM... It's not really Win7 that makes the safety difference for SSD's, it's that current-generation SSD's have a LOT more write endurance than previous generations. You can see here: http://techreport.com/review/26058/the-ssd-endurance-experiment-data-retention-after-600tb At present, the simulated write load is 300GB per day (every day) for five years. Some minor issues on the newest Samsung (but it has more overprovisioning to compensate; the "problem" is caused by higher-density cells). For comparison, I've had swaps etcetera (and savedgames folders, everything) on my Samsung 830 for about a year an a half, and the total write load is 6,38TB. Assuming nothing else breaks, I should therefore be good for at least another 10 years or so with this usage pattern. :P Things might be more sensitive on older SSD's, but you have to go a good few generations back for this to become an issue. (Like first-gen Intel SSD's etcetera.) EtherealN Posted March 9, 2014 Posted March 9, 2014 Combined with a decent USB 3.0 enclosure, the older ones make nice flash drives. :) That's a good point, actually. Either that, or E-SATA, I guess. (Though do they even make chassi with E-SATA ports anymore? My previous one had one (that I never used), but the rebuild I did a couple weeks back didn't have that luxury. cichlidfan Posted March 9, 2014 Posted March 9, 2014 (edited) Why? IMHO, it just performs better. Metro aside, and it isn't an issue with 8.1 from my perspective, it runs very well and I have had fewer issues than I have had with Win 7. That's a good point, actually. Either that, or E-SATA, I guess. (Though do they even make chassi with E-SATA ports anymore? My previous one had one (that I never used), but the rebuild I did a couple weeks back didn't have that luxury. One of my enclosures has both E-SATA and USB 3.0 (it's had a 60GB OCZ in it for two years). I tested it a long time ago and the performance was comparable but USB 3.0 is just more convenient. My ASUS Sabretooth X79 has E-SATA but that is the newest mobo that I have and, like you, I have never used it. Bucic Posted March 9, 2014 Author Posted March 9, 2014 (edited) ... I was referring to the statement in the official OCZ setup guide as most operations are reads and most writes are sequential a - there are still abusive mechanisms in operating systems that are better to be avoided b - let's not assume everyone runs later generation SSDs But please, let's not make it a SSD thread. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/SSD Edited March 9, 2014 by Bucic F-5E simpit cockpit dimensions and flight controls Kill the Bloom - shader glow mod Poor audio Doppler effect in DCS [bug] Trees - huge performance hit especially up close
Pepec9124 Posted March 9, 2014 Posted March 9, 2014 (edited) I have disabled my swap. However DCS + 8.1 can use all 8GB sometimes. On windows there is a tool called RAMDisk (clever huh ?). You can have 4GB assigned in free edition. It is copying data on shutdown to designated place if needed. Also restore at startup. http://memory.dataram.com/products-and-services/software/ramdisk 10 bucks for 12GB and so on. There is also some sort of discount for AMD clients, you can read more if you are interested. Edit. About services, I have disabled everything not needed but there is not much of boost. You can try Game Booster, I was using it when my CPU was Athlon 64 2800+. It was helping then, now not much. Aero - HD 4000 <-- very not recommended, drivers dont like DCS or something. Ah, this was the Ramdisk I've been using back in the day! I just forgot... the name of it :D And yes, the syncing to/from ramdisk is a very important feature. You can put e.g. your browser profile on ramdisk this way. Re HD4000.
