LoneMerc Posted March 13, 2014 Posted March 13, 2014 (edited) Hey All, Just wanted to say I had DCS World loaded for a while but never took a good look at it until now and wow what I been missing I was always a casual fan of flight sims/games and remember playing some good sims back in the day F16 and what not, of late a player of ILS2 which is fun but aging. I got into DCS and loaded up the A10A and found it interesting and fun but not able to manipulate controls on screen. I soon saw the A10C and liked the MFCD displays and said this is more like it, I purchased and then the whole world opened up to me! I found myself in awe of the on screen controlling of the cockpit controls and the MFCD style of the aircraft, all I can say is that its complex and hard for me right now but I LOVE IT! I find myself wanting to know all about the A10C beast and wanting to correctly do all the steps to take off, mission and land again like a pro. I know myself and being this excited over something I will have the drive to make it happen Im sure after many *cough* crashes *cough* ejects. Well thats where Im coming from and being new to DCS I have some specific questions that Im sure have been talked to death already but if you all can bare with me and can give some input to help a noob to get his wings asap I would appriciate it. Hardware: I know already I will like to get more real with the hardware so here are my simple plans. Trackir5: I just got mine a week ago, Love it! why did I not get the memo sooner! MFCD Cougar: Im sold on this I want, just need to find the right displays for them. Foot Pedals: Never used them but Im wanting to try them, See joystick below Yaw/Twist on stick a problem for me. I want this if I can disable from stick. Thurstmaster Hotas or Saitek X55? Not wanting to open up a debate Im still looking over posts, but cost being somewhat of an issue I still want the best suited for the task from the little research I have done its a toss up, I favor the style and prelabeling of the Thrustmaster but cost is up there and seems it will be A10 only specific. The X55 seems well up for the task as well but read something about toggle switches that are momentary and not full on/off and folks having issue with that for such sims not sure what to think about that. Also I have a problem with tight grip I guess and need to train myself to lossen up but I tend to apply Yaw when in a roll turn and I like to stop that, does any of these stick setups able to lock the twist of the stick or disable its function? Manuals: I downloaded all the A10 PDFs and Huey! (next challenge) But I look forward to ordering and getting that printed copy to eat up. In Game: The HUD display is almost not useful unless I lean forward with trackir it zooms in which is fine but something is not right I should be able to read in the seated position, is there anyway to adjust this? A I missing something? the bottom of the HUD is not visable and all text is small until I lean in and able to see all also a way to change color? Any help appreciated. The HUD Flight Plan Ladder, seems to be almost always on the right and not centered unsure if this is normal it can get to center if I yaw or some other movement but at level flight ts more on the right side, Am I doing something wrong? Is there a center postion Im not seeing? On plane damage can damage ior fire get worse the longer you try to stay in the air? If Im trying to limp home can things get worse sometimes? Random? Or the initial damage you get is it? Just hoping for this added bit of realism. Mods: Here I have no clue I modded other games for sure but like to know what are the must have mods out there. I love graphical mods anything to enhance the eye candy. Well I think thats enough for now, Any help is appreciated! Thanks Edited March 13, 2014 by LoneMerc
Devilman Posted March 13, 2014 Posted March 13, 2014 hey welcome to the community! you can adjust seat position up down in a-10c. may help with your hud.. but mostly you may need to configure track ir sensitivity for your sitting position. Call911 Posted March 13, 2014 Posted March 13, 2014 Search the user files sections there custom TrackIR an stick profiles. I know TrackIR was almost as overwelming as the A10 was in setting it up properly. Mine just quit so I waiting on my upgrade(TrackIR5) to arrive I can't imagine flyin without it. Also there a few setup videos on youtube for TrackIR. heres the youtube vid I watched, he also has some indepth A10 videos.
Paganus Posted March 13, 2014 Posted March 13, 2014 The ladder offset is indicating wind. Damage can escalate. Hydro leaks, fuel leaks, damaged engines failing etc.
mhe Posted March 13, 2014 Posted March 13, 2014 Welcome to the world of serious hardcore simming! :) On the MFCDs: If you have a place to put it and have the cash to get it, try to get a 1080p touchscreen and treat yourself to some Helios goodness, you can control practically everything without ever touching mouse or keyboard. Oh, and a Warthog HOTAS makes life much easier in the A-10C, wouldn't want to fly without it! | i9 12900K | 64GB DDR5-6000 | STRIX RTX 4090 OC | LG 38GN950 38" | | Hanns-G HT225HPB | TIR 5 & Varjo Aero | Virpil Throttle & Stick | TM TPRs | You don't stop playing because you grow old, you grow old because you stop playing.

tintifaxl Posted March 13, 2014 Posted March 13, 2014 ... I favor the style and prelabeling of the Thrustmaster but cost is up there and seems it will be A10 only specific. Thanks The Thrustmaster Warthog is not A10 only. It's just built to replicate the A10 HOTAS. Of course you can use it for any other plane or heli, too. I use it for the A-10C, Huey and P-51D in DCS and in IL2:1946, Cliffs Of Dover and IL2: Battle for Stalingrad. :joystick: Do yourself a favor and buy the Thrustmaster, even if it means to not buy the screens for the MFDs. LoneMerc Posted March 14, 2014 Author Posted March 14, 2014 Hey thanks all for the great feedback a lot of info there cant wait to get home and start configuring Trackir and other things properly. The Helios thing is VERY interesting and considering it. I don't see myself using keyboard commands its just too difficult to do while flying for me if I can do most or all on a touch screen and the Hotas I will be golden. Thrustmaster, I do want it and it looks like I may go that way, It maybe the first item I need to get and the most expensive. I got the A10 Manual ordered today, cant wait, for now looking over the PDFs and smaller guides. The forum here has just so much to read, I'm diving in fully.

LoneMerc Posted March 14, 2014 Author Posted March 14, 2014 Getting back to the Joystick anyone with a Thrusmaster or X55 can tell me if the stick yaw, twist of the stick able to be locked or disabled in software?
Tone71 Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 Getting back to the Joystick anyone with a Thrusmaster or X55 can tell me if the stick yaw, twist of the stick able to be locked or disabled in software? I don't own the X55 but I do have an X52 Pro and you can physically disable the twist on that. Don't forget that you can always disable the twist by removing the assignment of yaw within the DCS controls configuration. piXel496 Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 (edited) hi LoneMerc, If you fly with the joystick on your desk I find the thrustmaster grip too high (elbow floating) Currently I am using a combination of the x65 and x55. And I have to say (just have it two weeks) the x55 is besides good looking, precise, best price, loads of buttons and well made it is also a joy to use espessially with the huey. Pedals are essential. I like the saitek combat pedals, with the Pman mod (remove center dent). I don't use twist from the stick. Oh and I have used almost al kind of joysticks from cougar to CHpro. Still it is a personal thing and with joystick preferences some can develop superior feelings for there equipment just by the weight and price. I suggest filter those. Landscape mods can enhance the whole map. Personally I like the "low and slow mod" gfx Sweetfx can change things a lot too. Although I only use it to enhance sharpness. gives a lot more detail in the distance and crispness in your cockpit. But if you like lots of color and blurred images that is something also within reach of sweetfx. Cheers, . Edited March 14, 2014 by piXel496 DCS is freedom old stuff I made
LoneMerc Posted March 18, 2014 Author Posted March 18, 2014 Thanks a lot, Still more or less in the middle on those two choices, price maybe the deciding factor in the end I can get 2 pcs of kit for the price of the thrustmaster. I do want to fly the Huey later and taking out the resistance spring on the X55 looks interesting. But still thinking it over. With the great help here I got Helios 99% working so a Touch Monitor is being added to the list I will hold off on the Cougar MFDs since Helios more than covers that. Very excited.
