Hello everyone!

I mostly fly the P-51 offline, doing harmless lonely joyrides into the sunset. I've never actually flown a full combat mission with the P-51 and I feel the 1 vs 1 air combat against the FW 190 AI is getting a bit old. There's nothing like flying online with some friends and accomplish a mission together.

I know there is a server for P-51 vs P-51 combat (Merlin's, if I remember correctly), but I just have this gut feeling that I want more than that. I'd like to warm up with a couple of people on the runway, plot a course, fly formation, accomplish the mission and head back home. I have in mind the kind of experience you would get on a server like the ATAG server in Cliffs of Dover. On a much, much smaller scale, of course (4+ people instead of 100).

Simply put, I'd like to experience the Mustang in a real combat environment with real people as wingmen. We could practice formation flying, navigation, ground targets, mock-up dogfights... etc.

Any idea who I should talk to in order to wing up one of these days? If you're interested in flying and showing me a couple of tips and tricks, feel free to let me know.

You can try "Dogs of War" server, it is focused only on P-51D.

Player can chose air or ground start, PvP air combat and ground targets for both sides are on map.

Blue side has Fw 190D AI and Red has P-51D AI for air fight and support.

I`m not member of server team but often I play there and in my opinion this server is very good for P-51D practise.

Thanks for the recommendation and I'm happy to hear that you have enjoyed the server. I believe that is what Charly was talking about when he said Merlin's server. I changed the name after we created the DoW squadron.

And in reference to what you were asking Charly:

I built the server with the intention of catering to many interests. We have a group of fairly regular P-51D pilots in the organization and at this point we really are just focusing on flying together, no matter the scenario. Sometimes it's PvP dueling, sometimes it's elaborate co-op missions (Do0oM is the mastermind behind most of those) and other times we just host practice sessions to work on specific skills or disciplines. I would hate for it to be advertised as a one-dimensional shooting gallery where you feel like you are completely on your own. As we all know that can be an intimidating and unappealing environment. However, our biggest challenge as of yet is to populate the server with enough quality pilots at one time to warrant co-op missions considering the vast time-zone differences with our members. Typically I leave the server running one of our well-liked and versatile missions (such as River Raiders) and if people join they can choose what type of flying they want to do. There is usually a mission brief with specifics on mission goals, ground targets, aerial threats and the general theme. You are free to communicate with other players via TS or chat and let them know if you do not want to participate in PvP combat, if you wish to practice near and airfield and such. (Most friendly airfields have ample defenses anyways) If you find that someone on the server is acting out-of-line just bring it to the attention of any DoW members on the server or PM me here and we will work to remedy any issues.

I see you're from Montreal. As you can see, I'm on the east coast of the US and as a reference I fly mostly during the day on weekends and sometimes co-op missions during the night with some of our guys in the western part of the US, Canada and Mr. Yob from Australia.

Hope to see you flying!

What time and days are you guys usually flying at? Most of the time, I come in and there's practically nobody online.

Like I said in my post, that is the biggest challenge right now. It has been hit or miss as to when most people fly. I have had a busy few weeks and have flown a little less lately. The weekends, especially, mid-day Sunday have been the busiest. We have had plenty of days with 15+ human fliers on all day... But it is constantly changing. Keep an eye out and usually if I go on and fly for a couple hours I will see an average of 4-5 people join on most days.

I have a lot of fun in the DoW server but play in the EU timezone. I think as Merlin said there aren't that many people currently online and there maybe a bit of a catch 22 situation where people don't join the server unless others are already there - often there's no one around when I first jump in but people seem to show up not that long after. I've managed to catch the DoW chaps on TS and have winged up to take on the hoards of AI or other players, or just to fly formation. There are plenty of ground objects to bomb or strafe too. Was on one night a while back in the US timezone where they were landing on various mountain tops which was great fun and a real challenge, everyone was on TS having fun, so there's definitely the option of teaming up.

DoW seems to be the only dedicated P51 server but I know DCS Israel were running a P51 night a while back and there where quite a few on TS, not sure if it's still going though?

Hey Merlin, I don't mean to hijack the thread but I thought my question was better here than starting a new thread, if not I apologize.

I am new to DCS and bought the P51 on sale. I've done a lot of sims over the years, a lot of warbirds way back when and F4. I'm still learning the systems and just trying to make the aircraft do what I want it to without shuddering so am working on vertical work, turns without losing alt, flying a straight course.

But anyway, I joined the server last night and there were a few guys doing combat, so I jumped into a mustang took off and headed the other direction to practice. Its just nice to get in the air with other pilots. My question is, is it ok to do that or do you prefer the slots to be taken by active scenario participants? I don't want to break any protocol. And right now I just don't feel up to joining in on anything organized as I am still qualifying on the 51.

I did join the server two nights ago but thought I saw a couple of guys briefing so I quickly left and flew elsewhere. But I have to admit it gets annoying when you are trying to take off with helicopters flying around you and being buzzed by jets as you taking off.

P-51D Online Practice

Hey Tracer, no need to apologize. You are welcome to fly on the server no matter what aspect you'd like to focus on. If you want to avoid combat just try to stay away from the river. AI and human fliers tend to gather there. We have plenty of people formation flying and refining their skills near the airfields and surrounding areas. Welcome to the fun! And if you do hear the squad briefing a mission feel free to introduce yourself. We always welcome people to fly along.

Thanks for that Merlin. Just need a place where I can train so my altitude is staying pretty steady either straight or in a turn, and I'm working on mud moving now as well. Good to know where not to go : ), but at the same time its great to see other ships in the air, gets awfully lonely knowing your the only one there. I got pedals coming next week hopefully so that should help things immensely. All my old gear is not compatible with my new computer sadly. See you in the skies soon hopefully.
