Thick8 Posted April 15, 2014 Posted April 15, 2014 While I'm waiting on the rest of my switches to arrive and the rain to stop so I can cut out Dimebug's side consoles, I've been thinking about the front panel. I've tried numerous configurations of monitors to cover the whole panel. There doesn't seem to be a good way of doing that. I looked into 1080p projectors that could give me a 37" screen with a 1.5 to 2 foot throw. No good solutions on that front either. What I've come up with is to use a 40" 1080i rear projection TV. specifically the Toshiba 40H80. The TV portion of the unit is just the top part. I could cut the screen material to allow for switches and such; as well as match the shape of the panel. I know I would have to keep the measurements very precise so as not to muck up the focus but I think it could work. I found one on Ebay but it's local pickup only. Hell, for $125 it would be worth it to try and see if it would work. What do you guys think? Mike Powell Posted April 15, 2014 Posted April 15, 2014 It might be a bit of a challenge to keep the projection volume clear so you don't have shadows from wires (or your legs). But other than that I think it's a great idea. Mike Powell www.mikesflightdeck.com www.mikesflightdeckbooks.com
Thick8 Posted April 15, 2014 Author Posted April 15, 2014 I would keep it encased. Probably a metal or plastic framework with matte black foam-board walls to keep out any ambient light. Deadman Posted April 15, 2014 Posted April 15, 2014 it would get warm but for $125.00 go for it. https://forum.dcs.world/topic/133818-deadmans-cockpit-base-plans/#comment-133824 CNCs and Laser engravers are great but they can't do squat with out a precise set of plans.
dispatchgeek Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 Fair warning: I tried to use a 46" 1080i rear projection TV as a primary display for my pit. Despite being 1080i, it did not play well with my gtx260, the image over-scanned off the frame, and gauges were difficult to read due to the dot pitch. It sits in the corner of the basement, mostly because I don't want to haul 165 lbs of TV back up the stairs. If your anywhere near West Michigan, it's yours for the hauling out.
Warhog Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 I think you will find that it will be a complete waste of time and resources. I speak from experience as I have a 55" Toshiba rear projection. The quality of the image is poor and the resolution and dot pitch will cause the gauges/instruments to be very hard to read as was already pointed out by dispatchgeek. Its just not worth the effort from my perspective. I know what your reaction will be when you try it... Also as dispatchgeek mentioned, I too have a free rear projection TV if you want to haul it out of my basement.;) Sorry John, but they really aren't of any use for what you and I would expect for our cockpits. Thick8 Posted April 20, 2014 Author Posted April 20, 2014 My wife reminded me that there is a TV repair shop about a mile from my house. I was in there a couple of years ago and he had so many TV's that people just left there. I'm going to stop by and see if he has a small (30"-40") 1080i(p) unit I can try out. I'm using 39" TVs for the main view and can see the gauges just fine. So it should look OK on a smaller screen of the same resolution. there might even be a focus adjustment used at initial manufacturing that will allow me to get the perfect picture size.
