Vampyr Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 I've been using a keyboard to fly for a while now, but with release of the new F-15C flight model, I'm now considering trying a joystick instead. The only problem is that I'd need to buy rudder pedals as well, but those are expensive. Is there any way I can control rudder pedals using the joystick alone?
Wodan Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 There are flightsticks with rudder function, like the X-52 and others. Not as good as pedals, but much better as the keyboard. Win10, Intel 2500K@4,4 MHz, 16GB RAM, ASUS STRIX-GTX1060, SSD CRUCIAL MX300 525 GB, 4K TV LG 50UH635V, FreeTrack, X52

joey45 Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 yes. It's a twist thingy. The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance. Vampyr Posted April 30, 2014 Author Posted April 30, 2014 Just bought the Madcatz stick and I just realized how terrible I am at flying with a proper input. Going from keyboard to flight stick is a huge change for me, so it's going to take a while before I get accustomed to this. I can't believe I'm back to practicing basic flight maneuvers, LOL. Maybe I'll use the TF-51 for practice before getting back in the F-15C.
Vampyr Posted May 1, 2014 Author Posted May 1, 2014 Damn, something's not right here. Why doesn't the hat switch let me look down, down left, or down right? I even downloaded the driver and it still doesn't work... The group circled in blue is the one I'm talking about: Buttons 5 and 2 don't seem to work either, but I can do without those. The hat switch not letting me look down is a bigger issue at the moment.
cichlidfan Posted May 1, 2014 Posted May 1, 2014 That sounds like a hardware problem. If you just bought the stick, return it. ASUS ROG Maximus VIII Hero, i7-6700K, Noctua NH-D14 Cooler, Crucial 32GB DDR4 2133, Samsung 950 Pro NVMe 256GB, Samsung EVO 250GB & 500GB SSD, 2TB Caviar Black, Zotac GTX 1080 AMP! Vampyr Posted May 1, 2014 Author Posted May 1, 2014 Are you sure about this? It's a brand new stick... :( All the other flight sticks available around my area cost $150 or more. This was good value.
Vampyr Posted May 1, 2014 Author Posted May 1, 2014 Just confirmed that the stick is faulty. All inputs plus the blue LED light are on the same faulty control path. This was the last Madcatz Fly 5 they had at the store. I can refund it but I can't replace it. :(
buedi Posted May 1, 2014 Posted May 1, 2014 Since it´s a shop and since the stick is defect, they will probably send it back to the distributor / manufacturer anyway. When they throw it away, they lose their money. So when they send it back, why don´t they just order another one for their loyal customer (read: you)? Shops are crying all the time that the Internet is destroying their business and now they have a loyal, local customer which I hope they take good care of. Maybe talk to the shop owner if he can order a new one because you want to buy it?
otto Posted May 1, 2014 Posted May 1, 2014 @sixtyten Look for Thrustmaster flight stick x . Or hotas x. Or thrustmaster T 16000 m. I ordered them online. These cost about 50 dolars or so.And are very accurate . Waaayyy better than that mad cats . The only one better then these ones imho is the warthog but that one is 400 $ - 500 $ or so.
doveman Posted May 1, 2014 Posted May 1, 2014 I wouldn't recommended the hotas x. I've got that and it's really not very good for flying helos due to a large dead zone and sticking around the centre. Might be OK if you only want to fly planes I guess. Main rig: i5-4670k @4.4Ghz, Asus Z97-A, Scythe Kotetsu HSF, 32GB Kingston Savage 2400Mhz DDR3, 1070ti, Win 10 x64, Samsung Evo 256GB SSD (OS & Data), OCZ 480GB SSD (Games), WD 2TB and WD 3TB HDDs, 1920x1200 Dell U2412M, 1920x1080 Dell P2314T touchscreen

If they're going to have another one shipped in anyway, I might as well start exploring other options in the same price range ($50 to $80). There's also a second option: I can forget about the faulty hat switch and get TrackIR instead. Looking around the cockpit is why I wanted the hat switch in the first place.

You might order another one somewhere else or from another shop then. What I would not do if I were you though, is keeping the faulty Hardware. You can never have enough buttons, even with a TrackIR and sooner or later you wished the button would work for another function. I understand that you´re excited at the moment and giving away the stick needs waiting again until you can run this fantastic sim... but on the long term, personally I would rather wait a bit and have a functioning piece of Hardware on my desk. You paid your hard earned money for it. And I never accept when something I pay money for is not working as intended. But that´s just what I would do. Whatever you do: Happy flying in this brilliant Simulator! :pilotfly: :joystick:
Vampyr Posted May 1, 2014 Author Posted May 1, 2014 (edited) Just got back from returning it. I ended up getting a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro. I know it's not the best flight stick out there, but everything seems to be working fine and the stick itself seems solid. The only problem is that it's way too sensitive. I understand that I'm supposed to go into the controls and tune it, but I'm not sure how to do this. Can someone post a screenshot of their curves? edit: Nevermind, I think I've got the hang of this now. The dead zones needed to be set. Edited May 2, 2014 by Vampyr
