TonyStovepipe Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 Hello. I have 5870 1GB vram and I wonder if anyone could tell what graphics setting eat vram the most? I know so far that the texture and msaa use a lot but what about the other settings if anyone knows? Thank you for any help. Cheers.
ShuRugal Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 We'll need to know your full system specifications to provide any useful help.
Sorin Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 You do not need to worry about VRAM if you play at medium settings and resolution 1920x1080 or less.
TonyStovepipe Posted May 14, 2014 Author Posted May 14, 2014 My basic system specs. Tv/main screen 1920x1080 Monitor/second screeen 1920x1080 CPU = AMD 955 OC @3.6 ghz GUP = 5870 1GB asus v2 RAM = DDR3 1600 4GB My in-game settings. As it is now on a single TV 1920x1080 display only My vram is well below the limits of the 1GB But if I export the mfd screens to the second monitor even with cockpit mfds tweaked to be off it will go over the limit on a normal mission with other aircraft and tanks. So what setting should I lower to gain the most memory back but with the least effect on how the game looks? Do trees/bushes have a major effect on vram? Thank you again
Sorin Posted May 14, 2014 Posted May 14, 2014 Take out: heat blur and shadows; set MSAA to 4x. I guess you have it set in 3D settings of video card now. I have found better to set it in game at 4x and set the video card to "application settings" (at least that is how it is called in Nvidia). How do you see the VRAM usage? The only reliable way I have found so far is GPU-Z.
TonyStovepipe Posted May 14, 2014 Author Posted May 14, 2014 Thanks. My video setting is already set to use application settings so I don't have any anti aliasing on at the moment. I check my vram with msi afterburner but I will give gpu-z a test as msi does not display in the game screen and only on desktop with dcs world. I will report back with all shadows and heat setting off thanks.
alex1 Posted May 14, 2014 Posted May 14, 2014 Hiya, if you get the latest beta version of MSI afterburner it has 64bit support, its really nice finally being able to monitor 64bit games...
TonyStovepipe Posted May 14, 2014 Author Posted May 14, 2014 Thank I will check that out now :D I done a quick test using the mission defend camp Yankee. My normal setting as above. Outside cockpit 60 fps Inside cockpit 30 fps Max memory used 802 ---------------------------- Now new settings. Shadows low. Heat off. Cockpit shadows off. Outside cockpit 60 fps Inside cockpit 30 fps Max memory used 735 ----------------------------------- Saved a little memory but maybe not enough to use my second screen yet with mfds. And will test the heat setting on it's own as well in minute. Thanks.

Otherwise it looks quite ugly IMHO.

The only reliable way I have found so far is GPU-Z. You can see it with "MSI Afterburner" program. Some of the anti aliasing techniques really killing the VRAM. Not quite sure about MSAA. But it will easily exceed the 1gb limit at highest MSAA settings. I have experienced VRAM usage of 2gb so far in these games; Arma 3 - Ultra settings with 4xAA 16xAF (Not sure MSAA or FXAA) Around 2.7gb Tomb Raider - All ultra with AA - around 2.5 gb Skyrim - With heavily modded exceeds the 2gb Hitman Absolution. Seen around 2.3 on very crowded maps. Ultra settings with highest AA. "Let my armies be the rocks, and the trees, and birds in the sky"
The_Nephilim Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 (edited) set Textures & Scenes down the other settings don't eat much.. I put textures & Scenes to medium setting and halfed my memory use ..
