TonyStovepipe Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 I got another set of mfd's today and I have been working on some compact that will fit on my desk. Also going to add toggle switches and buttons to center and top part. The main center part is off the top of a pc case with wood sides and beams top & bottom. Matches up with my mouse :D No plans to add any screen behind the mfds as I need to get the TM hotas next :) Will update when I have done some switches tomorrow. Thank for looking.
doveman Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 Looks great Gothic. I'm planning to build something very similar, albeit with a larger face at a steeper angle just for switches and other controls to go next to the monitor. What did you use to attach the front panel to the frame? I was thinking of using wooden blocks screwed to the side panels which the front panel could then be screwed into but they'll be a bit chunky. Main rig: i5-4670k @4.4Ghz, Asus Z97-A, Scythe Kotetsu HSF, 32GB Kingston Savage 2400Mhz DDR3, 1070ti, Win 10 x64, Samsung Evo 256GB SSD (OS & Data), OCZ 480GB SSD (Games), WD 2TB and WD 3TB HDDs, 1920x1200 Dell U2412M, 1920x1080 Dell P2314T touchscreen
TonyStovepipe Posted May 28, 2014 Author Posted May 28, 2014 Thank you. Because the front panel is a top on a computer case it had 2 holes each side already so I just used x4 nut&bolts to hold the wood sloped sides on. It's very basic construction but it seems to pretty strong so far. The top and bottom long bits of wood are held by screws from thecase part where you would normally slide the side of the computer case. I did have a floor base but it did not really work out as planned lol so I will probably going to suspend the box for the electronics from a bridge connecting the sides.
doveman Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 Ah, I see. I'll probably use all wood, maybe acrylic for the front once I've done a few dummy builds to iron out the issues that will undoubtedly only become apparent when I go to put it together, lol. I'll probably put a base and back on it, even if only to keep the dust out. TonyStovepipe Posted May 29, 2014 Author Posted May 29, 2014 Acrylic sounds like a good idea I might use that if I make a better version later. For now it's mostly a quick and easy job so I can see how good I find it. Cheers.
Mr_Burns Posted May 29, 2014 Posted May 29, 2014 I bought a 16" USB 3.0 AOC Monitor: under $130 (under 100 English pounds) for a small disply for the MFDs - I recommend! Just make sure your MOBO is more appreciative of USB 3 monitors than mine....i spend 10 minutes with it disconnecting and reconnecting. 1
Trubshaw Posted May 29, 2014 Posted May 29, 2014 Neat job gothicghost. I have done something similar and back lit them with green LEDs. Then I print on thin printer paper inserts for each MFD and the green light shines through the paper so that I can fly and read then at night! Just an idea. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] TrubshawRN -=SHREK 94=-
TonyStovepipe Posted May 29, 2014 Author Posted May 29, 2014 Thanks guys. I am adding switches now seeing what works lol. I need to some sort of pull switch for the 3 fire pull handles.
TonyStovepipe Posted May 31, 2014 Author Posted May 31, 2014 Got the pull switch handle made. It's very crude but works fine. Cheers.
Mr_Burns Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 Nice one, are they off the shelf drawer handles?? I love the genuis of pit builders. How is the wood insulator thing attached to the panel?
TonyStovepipe Posted June 1, 2014 Author Posted June 1, 2014 Thanks and yes also very cheap but delivery took a few weeks. http://www.tmart.com/Brushed-Stainless-Steel-Cabinet-Bar-T-Pull-Knob-Handle_p113325.html The top wooden block it held in place by the spring with a small washer under the top block. So the top one being pushed apart with the spring until the handle is pulled. I did think at first I would have to attach the the wood part to the panel but it worked out better lol.
TonyStovepipe Posted June 2, 2014 Author Posted June 2, 2014 Starting to solder wires to the controller boards. It takes a while for me to do this part as I am still new to soldering. It don't look pretty but works ok :) I need to get this little project finished before the house move next week :O
TonyStovepipe Posted June 3, 2014 Author Posted June 3, 2014 I started adding some switches and testing out some magnetic paper on the fire disch sign. That is just for testing I will try make somthing more nicer later if I can lol.
TonyStovepipe Posted June 7, 2014 Author Posted June 7, 2014 Finished for now but I need to fix or replace the top 3 pull switches as I am having problems with them working correctly. Thanks. 1
doveman Posted June 7, 2014 Posted June 7, 2014 Looks great, nice job  Main rig: i5-4670k @4.4Ghz, Asus Z97-A, Scythe Kotetsu HSF, 32GB Kingston Savage 2400Mhz DDR3, 1070ti, Win 10 x64, Samsung Evo 256GB SSD (OS & Data), OCZ 480GB SSD (Games), WD 2TB and WD 3TB HDDs, 1920x1200 Dell U2412M, 1920x1080 Dell P2314T touchscreen
Mnemonic Posted June 7, 2014 Posted June 7, 2014 Hi Gothicghost, cool device, I would recommend you to print out these: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=109782 Instead of default Thrustmaster green cartons :) http://max.in.ua/Thrustmaster_MFD_Cougar_Pack_A10C_Layout.pdf If you print this PDF on A4, you will have right size
TonyStovepipe Posted June 7, 2014 Author Posted June 7, 2014 Thank you both and yes that was my next thing on my list I just need to buy more ink for my printer:D Minemonic did you make them yourself ? They look great and thanks for sharing with the community :)
Mnemonic Posted June 7, 2014 Posted June 7, 2014 Minemonic did you make them yourself ? Yes, I made these myself, and you are very welcome! Glad you like it! :)
TonyStovepipe Posted June 8, 2014 Author Posted June 8, 2014 Just wrong time to run out of ink lol :( I will have to go to the library so I can get them sooner. (little update) I removed the x3 controllers as it was doing my head in and way to messy. So I used my leo bodnar BBI-32 button box board from another project and now everything connected and working. The board My little setup for now. Still got a few bits to add and maybe some switches as well. Thank for viewing.
