tsumikae Posted June 7, 2014 Posted June 7, 2014 http://store.steampowered.com/app/273620/ For the veterans, enough said ;) For the young or the ermits, it's simply the best space "simulation" that ever graced the PC. It is 15 years old, so don't expect anything brillant in the graphic department. It is still unmatched in every other aspects, IMHO.
cichlidfan Posted June 7, 2014 Posted June 7, 2014 Picked it up, even though I still have the disks in storage. A quick try didn't run due to video issues. tsumikae Posted June 7, 2014 Author Posted June 7, 2014 http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=78710.0 This link is a complete, easy to follow and precise guide on how to have FS2 work on actual systems. It implies the use of FS open, but that's for the best. I must say, I just started the first missions for the sake of it, and I'm completely hooked -again. Despite the dated graphics. What happened in 15 years? How come we still don't have a space sim as engrossing, satisfying and epic as FS2?
cichlidfan Posted June 7, 2014 Posted June 7, 2014 Thanks. I knew about FSO but hadn't had a chance to mess with it yet. I want to try it with the Warthog. :D ASUS ROG Maximus VIII Hero, i7-6700K, Noctua NH-D14 Cooler, Crucial 32GB DDR4 2133, Samsung 950 Pro NVMe 256GB, Samsung EVO 250GB & 500GB SSD, 2TB Caviar Black, Zotac GTX 1080 AMP! tsumikae Posted June 7, 2014 Author Posted June 7, 2014 With FSO native, you can boost the native res up to today standards, and you can even use high res maps and effects. As for the warthog, I would say "overkill!", but considering the amount of functions to map, you may have choices to make :D
YorZor Posted June 7, 2014 Posted June 7, 2014 After the whole campaign I suggest you try the Blue Planet modification. Age of Aquarius is epic to say the least and War in Heaven is 'soon' getting it's major update with all voice-acting and stuff. Really recommend those campaigns!
Aginor Posted June 9, 2014 Posted June 9, 2014 I might check out FS2 once more, it's been a looong time... There are also some really cool mods and campaigns based on it, I remember a Battlestar Galactica themed one, and one based on Babylon 5 as well. And while you're at it: Check out "Wing Commander Saga" if you haven't yet, it's also a standalone game using the FSO engine, in the Wing Commander universe, and tells a parallel story to WC3. And if you got questions about it: I've been part of the dev team back then, so just PM me. :) DCSW weapons cheat sheet speed cheat sheet
tsumikae Posted June 10, 2014 Author Posted June 10, 2014 Haha I think almost everyone who played that game ended up messing with FRED and/or mods at some point. Both of you were on the original VBB too?
Aginor Posted June 10, 2014 Posted June 10, 2014 Actually no, I started using Freespace really, really late, because I always was a Wing Commander fan, and back then there was some sort of religious conflict going on between parts of those communities (kinda silly but some people are still stuck, so yeah, it is a thing). Some years later I found that the people at hard-light.net are mostly really cool guys, so that was my starting point. FRED is one of the best mission editors I have seen yet, btw. Given how old it is you can do LOTS of things with scripting, which is cool. It just gets really messy and a bit unstable if you do complex things, which I then use text editors for. :D I am working on a mod for the WC Saga mod, where you will be able to play as a Kilrathi. I'm a bit stuck though, so don't expect a release any time soon. Anyway, I think it's cool that the original game is on steam, I didn't know it was. DCSW weapons cheat sheet speed cheat sheet
Avernus Posted June 11, 2014 Posted June 11, 2014 Make sure you guys have a look into the 'Mediavps' files for the source code project as well. really gives it a nice boost for gfx As for getting the Tmwh to work with Freespace, you will need something like UJR + Jvjoy to combine the devices with pedals. There is a Trackir file floating around the Hardlight SCP site as well.. The only hiccup i get is with 3 screens wide + aspect seeker Lock cursor. Moves too fast during any lateral motion. Havn't found a way past that one yet, single screen works fine. If you REALLY wanna play the retail, Run Msconfig. set maximum Ram to 3096 or lower then reboot. This fixes quite a lot of older games actually. Just remember to undo the change for normal operations
