Am I the only one struggling to tune to the correct NDB frequency? I often discover that I have tuned to the wrong one when they are close to eachother... Don't know if it is that the scale is difficult to see while flying or something. Any suggestions to help me get better at it?

Use morse code as identifier. Most codes are one, two or three letters; each letter can be from one to four bits of sound, long/short or da/di. You have to write them down for each ADF freq you expect to use. When two signals are received, the speaker will give you both while the ADF needle will only pick up one of them. You should be able to tell when this is happening because obviously, 1) you're not hearing -the- code you want, and 2) the codes are mangled together making long, nonsensical sounds. A lack of pause between characters is the easiest way to tell I supose.

To distinguish there's no way but to tune left or right/up or down to get away from the errant signal.

look up the NDB map in the download files at digitalcombatsimulator.com. xxjohnxx (i think) made a good youtube showing how it works.

I tune my main one first and then confirm with morse. scaflight is right that the audio sometimes appears to be cumulative rendering the morse useless. Hopefully its on the bug list.

I don't know if the ADF will point towards broadcast positions on the UHF but that might be a way to navigate too.

... oh yeah - the other tip i use is the manual scale around the radio compass. manually orientate it toward your flight path (compass reading on top canopy bezel by hud) and then confirm you are picking up the right NDB by the direction of the needle point.

i.e. if you know your NDB should be on your 10:00 roughly then it doesn't matter if two NDB are close to each other on the scale or you are receiving a garbled morse response.... tune the channel until you have a clear signal from your expected bearing and you will have the right one.

I might point you to this video I made:

This also shows the morse-code problem in action. One user commented that he belives that multiple morse-codes play at the same time, making it more difficult to identify the right station. I did not particullarly test this, however I noticed similar stuff while working on the video.

Ive been trying to listen to this morsecode, either im oblivious or there are realy multiple morse codes playing, i cannot identify them! Possibly a bug?

I am finding multiple morse codes playing. The first station you tune to is fine, any successive tunes result in the sound playing on top of other morse sounds.

Thanx guys. And yeah I looked at your video before even attempting xxJohnxx! Your tutorials are always a great help. And your accent reminds me of the pilot of the german Condor Flugdienst aircraft that picked me and my family up from Gothenburg when our Novair plane had broken down on our way to Crete a few years ago which adds to my appreciation of your videos!

I have also downloaded the map with NDB's etc. Guess I will have to refresh my morse skills (I was actually trained in morse signaling in the Swedish armed forces back in the early 90's). I think my main problem is the scale used. It is really hard to see sometimes eventhough I use TrackIR.

Well, back to practising! :pilotfly:

Again, thanx guys!
