Hi all,

I am about to upgrade my RAM to bring it up to/above recommended system specs.

as can be seen from my sig I currently have 6GB 1600 triple channel memory and want to upgrade to 12GB I always have used corsair and plan to continue with this brand.

Shall I stick with 1600 MHz or will I get any benefit from going to 2000 MHz the prices are fairly similar but I want to avoid any problems.

These are the choices I have narrowed it down to

Corsair CMZ12GX3M3A1600C9 12GB (3 x 4GB) DDR3 Vengeance Memory

Corsair CMT12GX3M3A2000C9 12GB (3 x 4GB) DDR3 Dominator GT Memory

Corsair CMZ12GX3M3A2000C10 Vengeance 12GB (3x4GB) DDR3 2000 Mhz CL10 XMP

any advice appreciated. Oh and I lost my overclock reinstalling windows and have not got round to reclocking yet but may well after new ram comes if this has a bearing on the choice

Thanks in advance

Cib:)

Hi Cibit,

stick with 1600mhz (which by the way, is already too high for your cpu's mem controller to handle), and choose modules with the lowest latency (CL) at the lowest operating voltage.

Performance (fps) will be ''nearly'' unnoticeable with higher speed mem anyway.

Also it will be quite difficult to keep your 3.7ghz cpu OC if you run mem modules on higher speeds than your current mem is running.

best regards

Well I appreciate your answer and take on board what you said but although I dont get to run the RAM at the correct speed I have bought the Corsair CMT12GX3M3A2000C9 12GB (3 x 4GB) DDR3 Dominator GT and at 1.5 volts have timings 7.7.7.20 1T which makes it speedier than my previous RAM:)

As an upgrade it is a huge difference when in F2 I no longer have stutters when panning and a corresponding frame rate increase

I ran and benchmarked a mission with the 2 different setups and here are the results

with 6Gb

Frames, Time (ms), Min, Max, Avg

1640, 60000, 14, 34, 27.333

with 12Gb

Frames, Time (ms), Min, Max, Avg

2160, 55434, 16, 43, 38.965

I stopped it early on the 2nd test by almost 5 seconds by accident:music_whistling:

Biggest difference is in MP which was the real reason for the upgrade:smilewink:

What is the speed of your new ram (Mhz) when running at 7.7.7.20 1T latencies?

Those are very nice latencies you achieve there mate

Are they stable ?

seem stable but I can only find memtest x86 seems no 64bit available

I have maxxed out my graphics apart from TSAA and tree shadows. The game looks and plays so much better now:)

Misread my info. Its 2527.0 Mhz NB freq

FWIW

Since replacing/rebuilding my cooling loop I have a stable O/C of3.5Ghz

Memory timings have suffered a bit 9.9.9.25.1T for 1400Mhz

Idle temps 36 C load 100% (using IntelBurn test) 70 C

Talig is correct. Buying more than 1600mhz ram is futile. I'm not sure that more than 8gig does much for you either but with 1.5 just around the corner we may be utilizing more of our hardware.

X58 chipset is triple channel so can only go with multiples of 3, 6Gb was too low so next option was 12Gb. The RAM I bought came with a new RAM cooler and was worth the extra £10 over 1600DDDR3 without cooling fan assembly:) TBH I only posted this so I have a record of my settings;)

Doesnt the 920 oc by Bus only ??

My son has a similar setup and his CPU clocks easily from 2.66GHz to over 4GHz if I put the right RAM into it that can take considerable OC'ing. Watercooled btw, but the 4.x GHz were done with standard intel cooler.

I would aim for 2100 or 2400 MHz and OC the hell out of that old rig :)

Look at my data, sandybridge stuff running stable at 4.8 @ 1.300 Volts...what else can u ask for ??
