tflash Posted September 28, 2014 Posted September 28, 2014 Hi, I was wondering how the warbirds like P-51D & FW-190 compare to the new generation of Turboprop trainers/COIN aircraft like Super Tucano, Texan and Pilatus? Of course the warbirds beat the fancyplanes in looks and sound, but what about performance? Does anyone have some RL knowledge to share? [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
WinterH Posted September 28, 2014 Posted September 28, 2014 As far as I know, Warbirds, especially later ones, beat modern prop tranier/light attack aircraft in performance. Super Tucano, AT-6 etc all begin primarily as trainers, likely having economy and ease of operation before absolute performance. Then again, modern turboprops of course more than make up for it by modern sensors and weapons, some even able to carry Phython-4 missiles with helmet mounted sight :D. But if they'd have a go at a hypotethical one on one gunz dogfight, modern COIN aircraft would have difficult time against most dedicated fighters from 1940 on. Speed, maneuvrability, firepower would almost all be on the old bird's side.
